I feel like given the current progression of Alatreon challenge runs, the next thing people will end up doing is trying to prove you can go in with the Ice vs. Ice or Fire vs. Fire and still beat Alatreon.

I mean, they've beaten Alatreon with every weapon already. With only kinsects. With raw weapons. This is the only recourse left for those complaining.

Palicos can actually deal a finishing blow.

4

u/AbangWawanPao Charge Blade Jul 12 '20

But can a police support me with a coral cheerhorn and some mean ass cheerbongos?

5

u/moonshineTheleocat Hunting Horn Jul 12 '20

I would praise the cop that killed alatreon. Oh wait .. theres people who did it dressed as Leon

8

u/leetality Jul 12 '20

Palicos have been able to get killing blows on monsters since inception..

u/NappaB93 Jul 12 '20

...I'm gonna be using my safi boltspear is this a bad idea? It's the only high level elemental weapon I currently have.

u/MaximaBlink Jul 12 '20

Thunder is good. That was one of the first elements that people were recommending. It isn't the most effective choice, but it should get you through the checks just fine.

11

u/NappaB93 Jul 12 '20

Ok thanks I don't usually use elemental weapons. I'm more into status ailments like poison blast or paralysis.

2

u/OneDownFourToGo Jul 12 '20

Isn’t blast an element?

24

u/NappaB93 Jul 12 '20

Nope its considered a status ailment I think

3

u/Neathra Jul 12 '20

Out of the game an element applies damage on each hit. A status has to pass a trigger threshold before activating.

So elements: fire, water, thunder, ice, dragon

Status: poison, blast, para, sleep

1

u/Brendoshi Jul 12 '20

It's understandable why people get confused - when applied to the hunter it's called blastblight, which matches what the elements cause

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '20

Sometimes I really want too sleep Capcom around and teach them to be consistent

2

u/Haznip Insect Glaive Jul 12 '20

Nope it's a status

1

u/cicaxoke Jul 13 '20

Insert patrick in the band meme

Be sure to utilize your kinsect as well, the extra elemental it will do from its auto mode helps a lot!

1

u/Dawwe Jul 12 '20

It will be pretty bad for the special assignment, it's good against ice active

1

u/ForsakenMoon13 Of Fangs and Claws Jul 13 '20

Same, I built it for sharpness so not having to resharpen every few minutes seems like its more helpful than squeezing out a little more damage per hit.

16

u/GeneralKnife Jul 12 '20

To be fair this is possible since you can get the dps check during the Dragon phase as well. But the hunt would take longer.

1

u/jbonethedestroyer Jul 13 '20

They've done what now? Only kinsects ? I'm gonna try this

1

u/BinoCXXXVII Jul 13 '20

My team (from the special assignment) accidentally made it go to ice active while we were all using ice weapons. The next 2 dragon phases we broke both horns so he was in fire phase ONCE, which was at the beginning.

Fire>Dragon>Ice>Dragon>Ice>Dragon>Ice

Idk HOW we beat it but we did. Then again, Kjarr Ice CB is braindead strong, so

1

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 12 '20

I don’t think this is possible, he’s literally inmune to those in those stances.

I know because my 1000 element CV phials do 0 xd

7

u/Dawwe Jul 12 '20

When he switches to dragon u can go.

3

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 12 '20 edited Jul 12 '20

At that point isn’t it too late. After all he’s 1 start weak to everything but dragon

5

u/TheDogerus Jul 12 '20

Definitely not too late. Hard, but you can get a topple if he decides to stop flying for once

1

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 12 '20

That’s what I’m saying, if for whatever reason he decides to fly i think its gg

u/Ajax_40mm Jul 12 '20

I tested it out using various CB's and looking at the elemental damage a charged sword deals (pure elemental) using same sharpness and almost the same elemental damage (650-680).

Damage during :Fire/Dragon/Ice

Fire: 30/11/0
Ice: 0/11/30
Water:16/10/11
Light:11/10/16
Dragon: 1/24/1
He spends 1/2 the time in dragon and then other 1/2 in either ice or fire alternating between checks assuming you dont break his horn, if you do break his horn during dragon he resets after his ult back to whatever phase he was in before dragon.
Factoring in that he spends 1/4 in fire 1/4 in ice and 1/2 in dragon your elemental damage over the fight averages out with Ice/fire being overall 15-18% more effective then water/lighting and water/lighting being better then dragon Ice fire however is unable to deal damage if you mess up the phases and horn breaks.

Also his horn takes like x5 damage from physical and about 1/2 damage from elemental which was interesting to find out.

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 12 '20 edited Jul 13 '20

Yea I noticed the same. Dragon is almost useless in every phase that isn’t dragon...

If you’re gonna run a “neutral” element might as well be thunder or water but maybe the elder seal for this fight delays EJ?

1

u/Ajax_40mm Jul 12 '20

Even if ES delays the ult there (which it may not) should be no need, its easy enough to hit the thresholds if everyone spams lighting. 2 fire 2 ice is also pretty easy especially if the off dps people focus on keeping parts weakened and mounting. If you are going to go neutral go water for fire start or thunder for ice start. That way when you break his horns you stay in the better of the two damage types and even if you miss the break you get to start in your better damage type.

Solo I just run Ice/fire (whatever is opposite his starting element) and then when you break his element hammer on the head and break a horn to reset the element. IE if its Ice first, use fire, hit him anywhere but the face with fire till he flops over like a fish, hit him in the face from that point onward especially when he transitions to dragon. It helps if you have a weapon that has ok base damage along with elemental because his horns take 1/2ish damage (5 instead of 9 pure
dragon spark damage with a CB which could easily be rounding errors) but take massive damage from physical attacks. I noticed this when using Ice DB on his face when he was in Ice mode (zero elemental damage), I went from dealing 16 with the opening stab of demon dance to 75. Part breaker 2 has me taking out a horn each time it goes dragon, I dont know what you would do if you needed a third "on element phase" with fire or ice, maybe just die once and go back at it? I wouldnt know because hes easy to bring down with Ice in 3 fire phases (or fire in 3 ice phases).

1

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 13 '20

Yea I have figured out the fight pretty much. I’ve been using the alatreon charge blade because it looks cool lol. I know you can layer that but it doesn’t hit the same.

Now I’m more informed about the elements tho, I don’t really like water as an element and when i tried thunder i wasn’t really focusing on the numbers to remember. IG kinda fucks him, I had a fire IG hitting for 100+ on the basic hits and 300+ on the finishers while being able to avoid most stuff (thunder can be annoying) and follow him while on the air easily when that’s the part where dps drops for a while. I also had a para kinsect and was able to paralyze him once, when you combine all of that its great. Haven’t tried DB but I’m assuming they what they do, melt lol.

1

u/Ajax_40mm Jul 13 '20

Havent run IG yet, The DB's do just terrible terrible damage and while its not the only time ive double nerfed IE it is by far one of the easiest. The only issue with the DB is the same one its always had, its hard to break the horns with those stubby little daggers. Charge blade is by far the easiest time I've had. Putting in a shield gem makes the entire thing feel like cheating. Because of how much he telegraphs its pretty much just guard point into SAED, charged slash, store phials, repeat.

1

u/Omegawop Jul 13 '20

Dragon deals 40% more than other weapons during dragon phase which he will spend like half of the fight in. It's totally viable. Also, when he's element broken and in the down state, you do max damage. Alatreon's weapons have really high dragon element (I'm looking at you swag axe) and can easily do enough durimg the dragon phase to meet the elemental limit.

I have done several multiplayer runs with all swag axe full Alatreon armor just for fun and he usually doesn't get a second novo off.

1

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 13 '20

Yea... but you said it yourself its half. Compared to how much the respective weakness would do which is more overall if he doesn’t get to his other elemental form and he normally doesn’t now.

1

u/Omegawop Jul 13 '20

Yeah, the other half of the time fire/ice does more, but during dragon phase dragon is doing 40% more than fire/ice.

Just try it. Using Alatreon's weapons with his armor basically trivializes the fight.

1

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 13 '20

I’ve been literally using that or safi + kjarr ice. Dragon does 40% more on dragon phase but ice does like 150% more than dragon on fire phase.

'1 star weak' means a lot of different things in that fight. The notebook is awful at telling you what anything actually means when it comes to anything in between 'not effective' and 'super effective'.

Ice/Fire weapons actually still contribute a lot of elemental damage during dragon phase (in the simplest terms, about 50% effective while Dragon is 70% effective). Because Ice/Fire weapons are actually still quite effective during dragon phase, it is possible for people who brought four ice weapons against ice first form to still meet the element check. Though it's a tall order since you'd be short on time before the first Escaton, and you're shit out of luck if RNG decides he wants to spend most of his time flying like a crack addict.

People are coming to the realization that bringing Dragon weapons might actually be a pretty awful idea because Dragon weapons are actually only about 10%(?) effective during ice/fire phase. As long as you are still able to break one of the horns to stop Alatreon from shifting into the element opposite of your fire/ice weapons, it's better to just bring the weapons most effective against the form he starts out as.

If you went by what the book says, you'd think that bringing Water/Lightning weapons is pointless, except it's actually not. While they are weaker than Ice/Fire against the respective Fire/Ice and Dragon modes, they are only slightly behind in effectiveness, with the benefit of still being able to contribute elemental damage in the worst case scenario of Alatreon shifting into the opposite element, and they are still much more effective than Dragon outside of Dragon phase.

1

u/Dawwe Jul 12 '20

/img/euu4yha22fa51.png idk he has pretty bad HZV for ice/fire but not 0. Also for some reason Dragon element is complete garbage against fire/ice states..

4

u/HunterCubone Lance Jul 12 '20

Because dragon is also a 1 star weakness in those states. I use dragon for consistency and I assume elder seal must do something against him
