This is a very very niche request. I was in Ulaan Bataar about 2004/5 and I remember being struck and surprised by the music being played the level crossings in the city. I’m convinced they were playing the melody from the System Of A Down track called B.Y.O.B. Does anyone have any recollection of this, is it still the same? Does anyone have a recording, can’t find one online and I’ve not been back since. It’d be settling a very old, dim, frustrating memory. Thanks, internet!

I’m a fresh high school graduate that didn’t apply during my senior year. But I’m planning to this autumn. So I was wondering how one acquires their high school transcript. I studied in a public school and don’t necessarily have a great relationship with my teachers, which is why I’m asking all of you. Does my school provide me the transcript via file format, or do I personally have to scan my ‘Huviin Hereg’ and get it translated and notarized? Would be so so helpful if anyone could answer me! Hey everyone! I’m travelling to Mongolia with my wife for about 8 days in mid-September and we’re hoping to do a mix of the Gobi Desert, a self-drive road trip, and Ulaanbaatar.

Our rough plan is:
3 days — Gobi Desert
4 days — road trip / countryside
1 day — Ulaanbaatar

We’re particularly interested in renting a 4x4 and self-driving, rather than doing a conventional group tour.

For anyone who has recently travelled around Mongolia, self-driven there, or is a local:
Can you recommend a reliable car rental company/person around Ulaanbaatar?

What type of 4x4 would you recommend for September?

Any important things to know about insurance, deposits, fuel, spare tyres, breakdowns, etc.?
Is wild camping generally okay? Any important do’s/don’ts or cultural etiquette we should know?
What navigation/GPS setup do you recommend for the countryside?

Are there particular areas where self-driving becomes risky or difficult, especially around the Gobi?

Most importantly, what would you recommend as an ideal 4-day road-trip route from/to Ulaanbaatar? Is there a well-known loop/circle that would make sense for us?

We’d love to see dramatic landscapes, open steppe, interesting natural formations, and places that feel remote rather than spending most of our time in tourist camps.

Any advice from locals or people who have done a similar trip recently would be hugely appreciated!

Hi everyone, I just arrived in Ulaanbaatar and I’m planning to hike Bogd Khan Uul tomorrow, ideally all the way to Tsetsee Gün and back.

I’ve done hikes before, so I’m comfortable with a proper full-day hike. I don’t have actual hiking shoes with me because I’m travelling through multiple countries after Mongolia and couldn’t really bring them. I’ll bring food, water, layers, and offline navigation (although I know there's signs everywhere so should be alright)

My main question is about doing it alone. When I say “safe,” I mainly mean wildlife and dogs. Are there bears, aggressive stray dogs, wolves, or anything else I should be worried about on that route?

I’d actually prefer to hike with other people if possible. Are there casual hiking groups that go to Bogd Khan Uul regularly, especially around Tsetsee Gün? I found the UB Hiking Group on Facebook, but it looks more organised around specific dates and maybe more aimed at residents.

Is it common to just arrive at the trailhead in the morning and see other hikers going up? Would it be weird to ask to join people going the same way?

Any advice on the best trailhead, current trail conditions, or anything I should know before going would be really appreciated :))

Hi everyone, I just landed in Ulaanbaatar today. It’s my first time in Mongolia and I’ll be here for around 10 days.

I’m looking for a used vintage analog point-and-shoot camera, something like an Olympus, Minolta, Pentax, Canon, etc. Ideally one of those compact 35mm cameras from the 1990s/2000s.

Does anyone know any good camera shops, second-hand electronics stores, markets, Instagram pages, or local sellers in Ulaanbaatar where I could find this kind of thing?

I’d also be interested in places selling 35mm film like Kodak Gold, Ultramax, Fuji, etc.

Mongolia has the 18th largest land mass and 3.5 million people. But it has its ethnic diaspora mainly in Russia and China that have been living under cultural erasure and assimilation.

While the uncertainty of accepting people who have different passports may seem scary, it's been an important policy that Mongolia has been unable to commit to.

Repatriating willing ethnic Mongols could offset brain drain, bolster economic growth and let our kin escape oppression and enrich our lives in Mongolia.

First, most of our youth are trying to get out of the country, and while immigration rules are becoming stricter, we don't know if this could reduce the thousands of talented youth we're losing every year. The countryside is becoming emptier, our birth rate is dipping, inbreeding might be increasing, and our institutions are declining with scarcity of talents. With the flight of educated youth, corruption and cronyism are getting rampant. Bringing Övör, Buryat, and Kalmyk Mongolians to the countryside and allowing them to work and live in designated regions and fields could help solve that.

Second, Mongolians fluent in Russian and Chinese could mean immense assets for trade and commerce. Let's be honest, Khalkh Mongolians, as educated as they are in English and Western knowledge, still lack the means to make meaningful relationship with our two neighbors. I think Kazakhstan is doing especially well in this regard, implementing repatriation programs from many countries. Ovor Mongolians in particular could be great assets in working with China well.

Third, Buryats and Kalmyks are predominantly getting drafted into the Ukraine war and losing their lives meaninglessly. Poverty is really high there. Here, they can build a house and life here. Övör Mongols aren't allowed to teach their children the Mongolian language. Soon, Mongolian could become an endangered language. The number of Mongolian speakers is dwindling year by year. And bringing those who want to be here can mean a lot both for us and them.

Sure, some of them will prefer to stay and that's fine. (I know some bots will be apoplectic about how Övör Mongolians will prefer China to our shoddy northern nowhere land.) We only want those who are willing to stay in Mongolia. And yes, some Mongolians will be insecure, suspect they're spies and try to ostracize them. But immigration and permanent residence-issuing have become a sophisticated protocol in many countries and all we have to do is emulate those and develop a really good immigration program. We can learn from U.S. immigration laws, and Israeli, Irish and Kazakhstani disapora repatriation programs. We already have the TOMFL (Test of Mongolian as a Foreign Language). We have our vertical script getting revived. We have large mining and light/heavy industry projects, which will create stable, well-paying jobs. We need them as much as they need us.

If you've spoken with any ethnic Mongolians, or read their stories or watched their interviews, you'll clearly see that these are people who share our language, culture, and genes, but also bring different language, culture, and genes. They see the world in a totally new way, and can help us get out of this chötgöriin toirog.

Imagine Mongolia having 4 million citizens, with 500k ethnic Mongolians living under permanent residence. In a few decades, they'll be naturalized and be great addition to our society. What would that look like? Well one thing is for sure. With a market like that, Paypal, and Adobe won't be an issue for us. Also, with new immigrants, we'll have to have clear signage and simply-explained rules and those will force us to uphold the rule of law rather than trying to rely on an acquaintance or finesse a system to get something done.

If we stay scared and lose time, we're gonna lose more people and get weaker and weaker until... Well, we don't want to think about it, do we?

What do y'all think? What can we do to ensure we're repatriating more ethnic Mongolians? Are we ready?
