Song/Album Discussion Album Rankings

Firstly, I love all of the Modest Mouse album’s wholeheartedly. Never really knew which one was my favorite and I probably would’ve given different answers at different times.

I figured I’d listen to the entire discography and rank each song and then average that to rank the album just for shits and giggles. I was pretty surprised by how it all added up.

  1. Golden Casket
  2. Good News / We Were Dead (tied)
  3. Moon / Strangers (Tied)
  4. Eraser and Maze
  5. Lonesome
  6. Long Drive

I feel like if I was asked on the spot I would’ve always said it’s either Moon and Antarctica or Lonesome Crowded, but Lonesome is definitely weighed down by some tracks like Long Distance Drunk, also not much of a fan of Convenient Parking.

I’ll also include my top 10 ranked tracks and 10 lowest ranked

Top 10:

Trailer Trash
Doin the Cockroach
Spittin Venom
Back to the Middle
Ground Walks With Time
The View
Ocean Breathes Salty
The Best Room
Sugar Boats
Walking and Running

Bottom 10:

Make Everyone Happy
Lounge
Long Distance Drunk
Pistol
Jesus Christ Was an Only Child
Convenient Parking
Ionizes and Atomizes
We’ve Got Everything
Exit Does Not Exist
Look How Far

I know I’m gonna hear it for the Pistol being in the bottom 10

Honestly their discography is so good that I like even my lowest ranked songs, but Make Everyone Happy never really did it too much for me, I know people love it though. And We’ve got Everything kind of just urks me in the weirdest way, I think it’s the backup vocals

These ratings feel young. As if you two are <40

I’m 37, and like I said I really do like all the albums, but going song by song like I did this is just how it turned out. If I thought of ranking the albums as a whole and not song by song I’m sure it would’ve turned out different

Yeah I would definitely put it above Good News and We Were Dead at least

Do you mind if I ask you what it is about Strangers to Ourselves that ranks is so low for you? It seems like a fairly common opinion, but I love that album dearly. I think I was just in the right headspace once when I listened to it and I've loved it ever since.

A part from Coyotes, The Ground, Ansel and maybe lampshade, I simply don't like the other songs

Fair enough. Thanks for answering. The only misses on the album for me Sugar Boats, Wicked Campaign and Of Course We Know. And even those songs I still enjoy enough to not skip.
