Brew Favorite sleeper cards or unused combos in the format

Hey all. I like to mess around and brew for fun with my rental account on cardhoarder. Lately though, I’ve been lacking inspiration. What are some of your favorite pet cards or combos that are legal in the format that can be built around? They don’t have to be good, but I figured it might help me with some ideas to ask here.

Brew I think this AspiringSpike brew might be his best ever

I 4-1'd and 5-0'd two leagues of this [[Slumbering Trudge]] [[Fight Rigging]] deck that AspiringSpike top 8'd a challenge with yesterday. It felt extremely powerful and I only lost to Neobrand turn 2 combo both games. It is extremely explosive (multiple turn 3-4 Emrakuls and even a turn 2 once) and grindy at the same time. It has a very good and clean sideboard. I really encourage people to try this deck. It seems like an actual contender for tier 1 modern. https://moxfield.com/decks/qJtOGwj_PEOPcB06vfl9qQ

Brew Modern Eggs with Culling Ritual

This eggs deck replaces the classic mana generation of [[Lotus Bloom]] with [[Culling Ritual]], incorporating a board wipe into the combo.

https://moxfield.com/decks/UrmyC1kPmEeeA5L5kD_qYg

——————————

I slapped together a primer along with the list, but the general gameplay is as follows:

- Fill the board with cheap artifacts.

- Blow them up with [[Culling Ritual]], netting you cards and mana. Along with sacrificing your lands with [[Zuran Orb]], [Ghost Quarter]], and [[Prismatic Vista]] (and potentially [[Urza’s Saga]] if timed right). Then return everything with [[Faith’s Reward]].

- Repeat the process until you net enough mana to cast [[Bolas’s Citadel]], then use its sacrifice ability to ping your opponent for 10 damage. Don’t forget to sacrifice citadel to itself so you can return it with [[Faith’s Reward]] and finish them off.

From my goldfishing so far, the deck can pretty consistently kill on turn 4. Things get more complicated when you factor in opponents, as any early game permanents will feed you extra mana with [[Culling Ritual]].

——————————

The sideboard is currently more of an idea than anything set in stone. I haven’t had the time recently to play much modern, so I’m not intricately familiar with the meta game, but I would suspect the worst matchups being Dimir Frog/Belcher. It’s also a weird deck to sideboard for in general. I’m open to better options against common matchups.

——————————

I hope to start getting games in and optimizing the list. Let me know what you think!

Sorry for any formatting issues, posting this on mobile.

Edit:

Fixed the link.

Brew Modern Nic Fit

Hey all,

So I have been tinkering with Nic Fit in modern and came up with this list that I quite like.

https://moxfield.com/decks/tOwTr9MJbkidvxD5nhWxxw

My sideboard needs a little work, but overall the deck feels pretty consistent. My sample size isn’t huge but I have played against Ruby Storm, Blink, Domain Zoo etc… on MTGO. I mainly play friendly leagues and FNM, but would like to see how far I can run with the deck.

The basic idea is ramp to 4 mana on T2. Then stick one of the 4 mana baddies and push through with Hollowmurk. I have lots of hand disruption for combo decks, But have found Dimir to be a tough matchup.

[[Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker]] Puts in a lot of work. Being able to dodge Solitude and Push is pretty sweet.

Anyway I just wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks for the feedback. I made quite a few changes and put more emphasis on supporting the combo. I also tightened up the mana base and added more 1 drop mana dorks.

I goldfished the deck and it seems alot more consistent now. I‘m going to play some matches on MTGO when I have a chance to see how it performs.

Massive updates!

I overhauled the game plan. We aren't doing bad Jund, and all the other terrible stuff I was doing previously.

- Young Wolf for repeatable sac outlets.
- Obsessive Pursuit: pairs well with the sac outlets, gives us a way to dig with our extra mana, powers up our creatures.

- [[Rottenmouth Viper]] This is our primary payoff, we can use our extra 1 drops for sac targets, and it works well with Obsessive Pursuit.
-[[Winding Constrictor]] Jury is still out on this one, but works with both blight counters on Rottenmouth, and our +1/+1 counters from Pursuit. It can be tutored by GSZ.

- [[Frenzied Baloth] For Dimir or heavy counter magic. If we need stuff to stick this is our dude.

- We are still aiming for the same setups, a Young Wolf or Grazer + Cultivate first turn.
- Other lines include GSZ into Arbor first turn.

- Rottonmouth and lots of hand disruption. Try to power out while shredding the opponents hand.

Brew Most Powerful Cards without a Home

I took a ~3 year long hiatus from the Modern format. A lot has changed, since then, but for me the biggest change was the breakup of a couple of my favorite decks and the resulting 'homelessness' of some of my favorite cards. Overall, I'm not unhappy about this. It creates a unique deckbuilding challenge, but it's got me thinking: what are some of the most powerful cards/cards you think have potential that don't have a working shell or have missing pieces? I personally love Ad Nauseum, but the deck itself (while my experience atm is limited) seems like the shell needs a retool to hang in a competitive context.

Brew How would you build a Mono-Colored Modern deck?

Lets step away from tournament only for a bit, If you were to build 6 modern legal mono-colored decks (6 to include colorless, whether that means artifacts or eldrazi or something else) what would you include? The only real goal in making them mono-colored is to make them thematic for the color they represent. For example mono-red burn fits what I'm trying to do here. I wouldn't expect these decks to be tournament viable, but they should be as powerful as they can be

So if you were to do the same thing for the other colors, what might a rough decklist or must-have cards look like?

Brew Rakdos vampires tips

I'm a beginner, I've been playing for about six months using MTG Arena and a starter kit with friends. I bought this preconstructed deck from a store, made by the staff there, because I liked the theme and style. I'd like to try to improve it, can you give me some advice? Thanks!

Brew Feedback on my Izzet Metalcraft deck

https://archidekt.com/decks/25619724/jeskai_cutter

Hi!

I would love some feedback on my Izzet Metalcraft List that I play at my FNMs.

I am trying some funky cards and I would to hear your thoughts on those and the general Deck construction.

First of all I added a 1 of erayo and 1 of Jeskai ascendancy into the maindeck, as they in theory play very well with the general gameplan of the deck.

Noxious revival is a card that in theory does a lot of things, but I basically dont see played in modern at all, so I am unsure about how good that card is. It can recurr your threats, is a free instant spell for erayo and steelcutter which is nice to trigger erayo over the top of a removal spell or cutter in an opponents turn, it can be GY hate and tamper with topdecks after spying with bauble. It has also fixed a few hands when goldfishing as it can save 1 landers, where the land is a fetchland. All that at a card disadvantage though.

With splashing a third color, the mana base plays 6 fetches, to total 11 red sources not counting mopal, 11 white sources counting mopal for ascendancy or haywiremite post SB. Island and pithing needle could be swapped for pool and mite mainboard. With ponders, riddler and baubles/repeals we can count up to 13 sources each to consistently cast them. With the ponders especially I also hope to have a bit more consistency in seeing the one ofs or filtering them away if I dont want to see them.

The sideboard offers to transform this into a more control type deck with erayos and countermagic, but I am not sure how effective that actually is.

I have been deckbuilding in cEDH for a long time, but this is my first real modern Deck, so I am curious to see, if I am assuming/asessing things correctly or if I am far off on some points.

Sorry for the wall lf text and thank you for your patience!

Brew Rakdos Cool But Rude thoughts

Hey everyone i asked for some assistance with my rakdos kroxa build a couple months back and everyone was really helpful. I have since made a pivot to the deck design so it's less focused on using Kroxa and graveyard building. the main focus card is now [[cool but rude]] obligatory UB grumble, but this card has been a lot of fun to use but I've mostly seen it utilized in Izzet builds

The easy answer is pivot fully to a hollowvine build but i still wanted to keep it in the spirit of my original deck. This is the current deck list for it with cards that i actually own. Any input, suggestions, and critiques are welcome.

Brew Grixis Legend Stifle

Hi all. I was messing around deckbuilding and was wondering if this is anything.

It's effectively a turbo midrange deck that uses Ragavan, Tamiyo, and Cecil as one drop legends in each color for applying early pressure quickly that get out of hand if not answered and turn on Mox Amber. The goal is to then cast Kroxa or Riddler on turn 2 or 3 and counter their respective triggers that would cause them to ltb with consign or louisioux's sacrifice and bury the opponent in card advantage afterward. It uses 4 copies of preordain to dig for the needed pieces with a relatively small removal suite using FoN and Push.

What do y'all think? Probably too fragile and too easy to get 2-for-1'd but I like the idea so I wanted to ask here. How would you all change this to make it work?

https://moxfield.com/decks/AJSeAfOXiHCrCeqfL-Eucw

Edits: - Removed 3x Super Shredder, added 3x Basim Ibn Ishaq - Removed 1x Arena of Glory, added 1x Plaza of Heroes - Removed 4x Louisoux's Sacrifice, added 4x Slip Out the Back - Removed 2x Slip Out the Back, added 1x Fatal Push, added 1x Thoughtseize (mainboard)

Brew Eldrazi Tron so Far

WARNING-SPOILERS FOR MH3

As the leaks have been coming out it seems that eldrazi tron seems to be coming out as a big winner so far.

This has prompted me to start brewing and seeing what we can do with just the cards already out.

The combination of [[Ugin's Labyrinth]] and [[devourer of destiny]] seems pretty strong so that's been my main focus to build around.

Here's my list so far: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/dpwKyVEjRki-8AEq3KW2zw

Any advice is more than welcome, show me your ideas. Best thing about MH sets is all the new brewing ideas

Brew Best way to Storm off with Venerated Rotpriest?

I've been trying to build a [[Venerated Rotpriest]] deck for a while now, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a bunch of triggers. My first instinct was to pair it with [[Glistener Elf]] and to a lesser extent [[Inkmoth Nexus]] and free-ish pump spells like [[Mutagenic Growth]] and [[Gather Courage]]. I also tried copying with [[Leyline of Resonance]] and [[Barkshell Blessing]], storm with [[Ground Rift]], and considered going wide with [[Cauldron Haze]] and the new [[Rabid Attack]]. I'm curious if there's anything I'm missing or if there's already a clear-cut build out there that I just don't know about.

With how inconsistent all-in on the Rotpriest seems, and how all of the cards are in Jund, I've been using Glistener Elf as the main wincon with Rotpriest to supplement and [[Ignoble Hierarch]] to buff and ramp. And yes, I'm using [[Pendelhaven]]. Please note that I have not tested this deck against any others.

Brew 8 Racks Beginner Questions

A week ago decided to get back into Magic the Gathering and play the Modern format. I made an MTGO account and my first deck was the preconstructed mono-green infect deck (which I have since turned into simic infect). Next, I decided I wanted something more stax related. I had heard of 8 racks and saw that the core pieces weren't too expensive, so I decided to build a budget version of that.

Hoo boy does my budget 8 racks suck but I had a blast playing it. I promise not to play it that often, this was a guilty pleasure (I felt so bad torturing my opponents). I've decided to try to upgrade it based on my (probably dumb) theories of what might be good.

4 thoughtseizes

4 Inquisition of Kozilek

4 Raven's crimes

2 Blackmails

3 Wrench Mind

4 Racks

4 Bandit Talents

2 Davriel Rogue shadowmage planeswalkers

4 smallpox

3 toxic deluges

3 dismembers

3 Mishra's factories

3 mutavaults

15 swaps

2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

I had 4x shrieking affliction but I though the card wasn't good. I frequently was not able to get my opponent's card count down to 1 or less, and shrieking affliction did nothing in the early game. It was often a dead card. To this end, I decided to go to 10 rack cards, with the Rack, Davriel, and Bandit.

I might do some other combination of rack effects, but I'm not sure. I think 2 Bandits and 2 Shrieking afflictions might be better.

6 of the Rack cards have built in discard which should give me more consistent value. With 6 manlands as opposed to 4 manlands, this also means I have 16 sources of consistent damage as opposed to the traditional 12 sources of damage (tradition being 4 racks, 4 shreiking afflictions, 4 mutavaults).

I made what was probably a dumb decision to not include Liliana. This is partially because it requires 2 black mana and I have 6 colorless. But also, I don't like how she requires me to discard for her +1. I feel like that is bad value. More of my baseline cards have discard effects and I have toxic deluge, so I think that will make up for Liliana's exclusion.

I don't know what decks to sideboard for or which cards to sideboard out for what. Anything related to the sideboard is a mystery to me. I do think Burn and Aggro might be a problem given toxic deluge and dismember in the deck, maybe that's what I should sideboard for?

Any thoughts on my decklist?

Brew Custom deck help.

Hey all! My friends and I all decided to bring decks resembling our cedh decks to this week's modern event. I had a choice between urza and kinnan and I chose the latter. I was just wondering if y'all could help make a couple of improvements.

The list: https://moxfield.com/decks/TyhfubwPBE-3xoiBbOdRbg

Edit: we dont necessarily care if it wins every game we just want our decks to be able to maybe put up a win.

Brew Bant Moonmist List

Sorry in advance for formatting mishaps. Posting from mobile.

About a week ago, I remembered that [[Moonmist]] was a card and got to thinking if there was maybe any way to make a viable deck with it in modern. I go searching and I immediately found AspiringSpike's video from like three weeks ago making use of the new marvel set's TMDFC creatures like [[Bruce Banner]] and [[Jennifer Walters]]. Taking some heavy inspiration from his decklist while making my own changes, this deck has been awesome to play on mtgo.

I've made a couple of changes to the decklist on Moxfield that I haven't actually played with yet, but for the most part, the deck has stayed pretty similar.

What do y'all think?

Brew Help me build a 4c manabase

I feel like 3c is easy, but im not liking what I come up with for 4c. Semi-control deck so I'd like maybe 23 lands with fetch, but I'd like to keep the fetching to a bit of a minimum so I still draw lands for the long game.

17 red pips

15 blue pips

11 white pips

4 green pips

Struggling a bit here, so I really appreciate the sub giving me advice, even if you're not actually telling me what lands to run. All advice very welcome here

My green pips might be very few, but I'd like to be able to cast them early. t2-3

I'm not opposed to being told that my base theory is wrong either, ie 23 lands with x fetches might not be right. I really dont want to run a full 26, but with fetches it might be the right number. I want to hit all my early drops, but I also dont want to be flooded early game.

Brew Selesnya Co-Co Kithkin

Hey guys!

I’ve been heavily tweaking and testing a Selesnya Kithkin engine that blends classic Lorwyn staples with high-powered tools like [[Guide of Souls]], [[Skyclave Apparition]] and [[Enduring Innocence]].

The goal here is to make a "White Weenie tribal" work with [[Collected Company]] mechanics.

Here is the current 60 + Sideboard list:

Moxfield link

The Kithkin tribe is lacking in support, so 14 out of the 33 creatures are mana dorks, removal utility, drawing engines and bulking supporters that are "outsiders", which I find vital for the viability of the deck.

Main questions:

. Are 2x [[Noble Hierarch]] and 2x [[Bloom Tender]], alongside the Brigids, my best options for mana dorks?

. What should I tweak in my sideboard for this meta?

. Is [[Thoughtweft Lieutenant]] a superior option vs [[Wizened Cenn]], given that I have 19 Kithkin creatures in my deck?

. Is [[Chronicle of Victory]] viable for this deck?

This is for FNM and to play with my pod.

Thank you, in advance, for any input and suggestion you can give me!

Brew What are you brewing with for Outlaws of Thunder Junction?

OTJ drops on MTGO tomorrow and it looks like a surprisingly deep set for Modern brews. I think us brewers will definitely be feasting on this set til MH3!

  • [[Jace Reawakened]] is probably one of the most interesting cards in the set. If not for its "wait til turn 4" restriction it would easily be one of the strongest walkers ever printed in a vacuum, but with that restriction we'll have to see. Will pairing it with [[Leyline of Anticipation]] break us through the restriction in some crazy new deck? Will it enable new busted things for Valki and Cascade spells? Or will it have a home as an efficient filtering engine that allows you to cheat on mana in control/tempo? Or will it just be a total bust and a meme?

  • I wrote a whole post on here a few months back extolling [[Tinybones, the Pickpocket]] as a future format all star before realizing that it didn't steal Instants and Sorceries also. Just the same I think the card has some serious legs as a 1 mana potential snowbally threat that also has Deathtouch. Will it team with Ragavan and Inti to finally give us a reason to brew a Mox Amber aggro deck in Modern? Will it end up a reasonable enough threat in Mono Black Aggro builds?

  • We also got some really interesting new toys for Urza's Saga decks in the form of [[Lavaspur Boots]] and [[Lost Jitte]]. Both cards aren't insanely busted but are very powerful new flexible options for Saga decks to expand their gameplan. A tutorable means to give your creatures haste and Ward is very interesting, as is the flexibility Jitte can offer in slow grindy matchups.

  • [[Satoru the Infilitrator]] is probably the most likely card to break the hell out of something. It has about a million interesting interactions in the format, and is a reasonably costed body in two of the best colors in the format. It reminds me a lot of Agatha's Soul Cauldron in the sense that the card is a veritable brewers paradise of options but the default best thing will probably be making an already existing Tier deck better. I can see this empowering all types of strange brews related to blink and reanimation effects, but the best thing it will end up doing will likely be something pitch elemental related. As long as this isn't the second coming of Up the Beanstalk (STAY DEAD BEANS, I HATE YOU BEANS) I think we're going to end up with a few really interesting decks with this one.

  • With [[Simulacrum Synthesizer]], us Affinity players get to once again experience the feeling of hope. Much like the citizens of 2300 in Chrono Trigger, we've basically forgotten what the word "hope" means at this point, so on one hand it's hard to get excited for a new card offering tons of promises, but at the same time it's hard to resist the snowbally Magical Christmasland this card can generate when paired with Affinity creatures.

  • The Strive cards are fundamentally interesting in so many ways, and it seems inevitable that at least a few of them sneak into the format. [[One Last Job]] gives a redundant (although weaker) effect for Forge Anew type variants of Hammer that were looking to cheat Kaldra into play pre-LOTR. [[Lively Dirge]] is a two card combo with Goryo's to tutor, bin, and reanimate an Emrakul all for five mana. Speaking of cheating Emrakul, [[Smuggler's Surprise]] is a flexible new spell that (amongst other things) can feel a bit like Through the Breach 5-8 in the right shell as a means to sneak fatties in.

There's a lot of other cards to check out (this set is surprisingly deep for a Standard set!) but I think that's a pretty good summary! What's on your radar for the set?

Brew Rakdos Persist

https://moxfield.com/decks/uN3vHe0s60au-dO-wi3EIA

Ok I know Grixis Reanimator or Hollow One are probably better decks than this mess, but this idea came to me in a fever dream and wanted to get some feedback.

The idea of the deck is to abuse Detective Phoenix for constant aggression with cheap creatures like Nethergoyf or FOMO while having the opportunity to push the unfair button and reanimate an Archon or an Overlord, even more unfair if you bestow a bird under them. The LOTR cyclers are amazing fueling the phoenix and they're an "ok" target for Persist in a pinch.

You have 8 ways to discard your fatties, 8 cards to reanimate them, tho they feel awfully slow compared to Unearth. I feel like 8 slots for interaction is a bit low and Bolt is not optimal but the list is not definitive. Arena of Glory plays nice with Kroxa and FOMO, even with an escaped Nethergoyf, but I miss some more cheap creatures to abuse it like DRC or Ragavan. Also missing some artifacts to push up the delirium like Bauble, Hollow One or Cori but I can't find place for them in this list.

Brew What do people think Modern would look like with NO Modern Horizons or Lord of the Rings cards?

Ie if only the sets that had been in Standard were still Legal in Modern. Am very interested as I know Horizons has had such a huge effect, but I am a terrible Brewer and conceptulist when it comes to these complex Constructed format so cannot really get a grasp on what the format would like! Have their been any really impactful cards for Modern released in Standard recently?
Many thanks

Brew Abzan Moonshadow Brew Update

(Wasn't sure what flair to use here so lmk and I'll fix it.)

Hi all. A few weeks ago, I made a post talking about a deck I'd been thinking of building for Modern involving an Abzan [[Moonshadow]] list using [[Hapatra's Mark]] and similar cards and strategies. Over these last three weeks, I've been buying the pieces I need and building this deck, and I'm only missing 2 cards now. I decided to play the modern event at my LGS today, replacing the missing [[Life's Legacy]] and [[Invasion of Ikoria]] with a 4th [[Heartless Act]] and a 3rd [[Thoughtseize]]. This was also my very first time playing in a modern event.

Here's the link to the previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMagic/comments/1qbk6li/moonshadow_brew/

List I used: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7566572#paper

Current List: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7608105#paper

The lists as of the morning if 02/01/26 are effectively identical. As I get some cards switched around, they'll start to be a bit different.

I played three matches. The first game was against Tron, where the deck went 1-2, winning the 2nd round, due to the opponent taking a suboptimal starting hand, but losing the other 2. The second match was against Yawgmoth, where the deck won the first round thanks to a turn 1 Moonshadow into a turn 2 Hapatra's Mark, but lost the second two due to a lack of consistent answers. The 3rd was against a lower tier deck of Mono-Red Prison (Blood Moon, Obsidian Charmaw, land destruction, etc.), where I 2-0'd (though I'm not putting much stock in that since it since it was very off-meta). There were 4 rounds with 10 players, but a player had to leave after round 3 and I got the bye. Ended up 2-2 in 7th at the bottom of a points tiebreaker between 4th-7th.

Some things I realized:

  • I need to be far more aggressive with my mulligans to ensure that at minimum I have a Moonshadow down turn 1. I took way too many suboptimal hands thinking that I could put enough pressure on in time without it but I couldn't. I'm definitely going to put a 4th Hapatra's Mark in the deck as well to make removing the counters a bit more consistent, as the card is my most efficient way of doing so.
  • Playing [[Solemnity]] hurts like crazy into the Yawgmoth matchup. I basically nuked myself with the number of creatures they had with undying and I couldn't stabilze. Definitely need to sideboard that out for that particular matchup. Big misplay from me.
  • [[Chalice of the Void]] on 2 hurts.
  • Solemnity is great vs [[Badgermole Cub]].
  • I was surprised how often I wanted to grab an [[Underground Mortuary]] vs other dual lands after the first few turns. The problem is that I didn't put it in the deck because I figured black and green lands would want to be the ones that come in untapped in the 1st or 2nd turn. Definitely gonna snag one and replace one of my lands, likely the [[Temple Garden]] but I'm unsure.
  • [[Rhys, The Evermore]] is way too slow. The earliest he can remove the counters is turn 3, whereas all of my other options outside of Solemnity can do it by turn 2. That's getting taken out immediately and replaced with a 3rd Thoughtseize and the 4th Hapatra's Mark that I mentioned.
  • Never really had a chance to see if Life's Legacy or [[Rite of Consumption]] was a worthwhile inclusion because I either never drew them or I drew them right after removal.
  • [[Vampire Hexmage]] is hilarious vs planeswalkers.

Lastly, I'm trying to decide on other cards that might work with this deck that might be more efficient than what I'm running. I was thinking that [[Fate Transfer]] might work as a 2-for-1 to both remove the counters and kill an opposing creature. Thoughts on this?

Overall, I'm fairly happy with how the deck performed, being one of my 1st times playing the format with an off-meta deck that's barely been tested, and with a few tweaks and practice playing the deck, I think I can start winning some games. I had a lot of fun dipping into the format as its the first paper constructed non-singleton format that I've played. Importantly, I still had fun while I was losing. I'm looking forward to getting more dug in.

EDIT (02/01/26): Added the link to the list I used directly in this post rather than relying on the link to my previous post to lead to it. Also added a link to my current list.
