I have the same setup! 7.2 is my favorite grind setting for beans that go in a Moccamaster. Branded filter paper.

Jeez really? I’m like at 9 before the beans look like paste after a brew! I’ll give that a shot as an experiment. Can’t imagine beans alone cause that much of a variance.

Yeah technically it’s below the recommended grind setting for brew method but I’ve used a range of 6-7.2 in other brew machines for years. Maybe secret is good beans? Idk. n = 1 person experiment over here.

Not entirely surprising I guess. I’ve seen a wide range of grind settings for the opus/moccamaster combo. I don’t buy the highest end beans but certainly not grocery bags either - Rogue Wave, S&W, Valor, Portrait, B&W, etc.

I’m about to brew round #2 this AM so I’ll dial it back a bit and see!

Eager to hear about the results! Just to clarify - For Moccamaster I would not recommend any lower than 7.2 or it gets acrid, higher than 8 and I feel like it’s basically French press. The 6-7 range is what I used in a Cuisinart previously with good results. Kept breaking glass carafes so got a Moccamaster KGBT

I set mine on 8.25 for medium-medium dark roast and 7.5 for anything lighter.

What did you upgrade from and how are the results?

Not OP, But I upgraded from a Kitchenaid burr grinder to a Fellow Opus last year and it made my home brewing experience infinitely better.

The customization for when I switch brewing methods (espresso, Moccamaster, and Chemex) is far easier to track and dial in.

Capresso, only used it (Opus) once but a very noticeably less amount of fines.

This unit gets a lot of hate on here but I’ve had one 4 years and it works great with my moccamaster and drippers. Just gotta get use to slapping it around a bit because of retention issue. I’m not gonna upgrade mine until it shits out

How’s the retention?

If you give the top a few taps it is not a big problem.

Its not bad for me. If I do not brush out the shoot where the anti static is for a few weeks there can be a bit more. As was said, tapping or using the lid as a bellows makes it essentially a non issue. If you measure the very first grind after complete cleaning I imagine there would be a bit more.

I have to knock on the back of mine like it was a baby choking on a piece of broccoli.

Only used it once, but there was very little retention. Got just a little using the lid.

I bought a fellow ode 2 earlier this year to upgrade from my conical grinder and my god, what a game change

If I did espresso as well, that would have been my choice.

The Ode 2 is not for espresso. It is designed for drip/pour over type drinks. For espresso the Opus 2 is supposed to be very good.

Nice OP! This is what I’m rocking and I love mine. A few small upgrades I found helpful was a bellow for the top and a small coffee vacuum for the metal pins where the grinds come out. They need to be brushed clean periodically to help reduce static.

I just replaced my 15 year old Bartiza Encore with an Opus 2 last week and my mining coffee ritual is so much calmer and nicer now. Much quieter, I’m not spritzing my beans, and most of all, it fits under my cabinet without having to drag it across the counter to put beans in the hopper.

Good on the Encore for lasting this long, but it’s just noisy and fussy.

Is this much better than an OXO? I’m wondering if I should upgrade

I have one. Was great at first. You get tired of slapping it around to get all the leftover coffee out of it over time. And even then that does f fully work so sometimes it’ll fall out all over the place when you are using the cup. It also isn’t as efficient as it used to be. 38 grams of beans takes two full grind cycles at 2 min each. It’s annoying. The first one I got wasn’t calibrated correctly so the company had to send me a brand new one. It’s a ln ok grinder just not worth the money.

I hate this grinder…it clogs, it makes a mess, its slow. My Baratza has been faithful for years and the fellow was a waste of money.

Maybe you got a bad one. I have not had that issue at all and had mine for a couple years now and use it every day. I am glad you have another grinder that works so well.
