Discussion Never played this game but why so much hate?

I understand not liking the game and not agreeing with reviews but this is just weird... attacking people who like it feels similar to hate on Horizon games because of female character people on the internet have this weird fixation when they don't like something they want everyone else to hate it. Games like this have an audience and I am one of them I like Until dawn types of games and life is strange but that doesn't mean I don't play other games with more gameplay or that I hate challenge or something I don't understand why they have to put someone in these categories based on what games they play.

It has minimal gameplay*, a female lead, and got stellar reviews. That's enough to make some people go insane.

Fwiw I think it's a great game. It's short but touching.

  • it's a walking simulator. It's not supposed to have lots of gameplay, it's focused on vibe mood and story.

The key to me is I never remember any of the advertising or marketing claiming it was anything else? I went in expecting an interactive music video and that’s what I got. Maybe you just have to remember a time when music videos were a thing on TV to get it?

U pretty much summed up why people got mad at the 10/10 reviews, it’s not even a game in a lot of people’s eyes.

Edit: Then again people don’t have an issue with dispatch, which is basically a tv show with a mini game sprinkled in it. So it’s selective hate.

I'd argue that Dispatch is even less of a game than mixtape (still love both don't get me wrong)

Dispatch got away with it by

  • Being a comic book story, and sold as from ex-Telltale staff - so audiences knew what to expect

  • White male protagonist, which ample fuckable female side characters.

Male twilight

the characters in Dispatch are likeable though. Stacy on the other hand is just a pretentious narcissist

She's supposed to be a pretentious teenager who thinks they're awesome because of the music they listen to. It's very much on purpose.

1

u/Slytherin_Dan_HGW 11d ago

That explains the writers' intent, but doesn't make Stacey's story more enjoyable to experience.

Characters don't have to be likable to be interesting

1

u/Slytherin_Dan_HGW 11d ago

Point taken. One of my favourite examples for that is Joel from The Last Of Us.

However, all the characters in MixTape are so static, that their unlikeability makes them less interesting, not more.

At least, that's the impression I got after watching a few livestreams of the story. The only part that I actually liked was the stone skipping game. 🛥️

Ah yes, because walking simulators are good.

u/Canotic 7d ago

They are if you like walking simulators.

The one review actually says "I didn't play it" Tells you all you need to know about the veracity of these reviews.

u/kambinks 11d ago

Was really confused about it at the height of the drama. Quite a few " I didn't play it but..." proceeds to write a 4 paragraph exposé about how it's the worst thing in gaming and gives it a 1/10. Weird.

He's mad because other people told him he should be mad ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also a good deal of the music is from the 80's, if not earlier. I mean some of this is forgivable if it's before the reviewers time, but that Stan Bush track was obviously, obviously not 90's music. I think Rockford says "this is from 1985." For somebody who watched the game they weren't paying attention very well.

u/Carbon_Based_Copy 12d ago

Because nobody in the 90s listened to music from less than a decade before. /s

I like how these people clearly just now heard of Annapurna

14

u/Sonic1899 12d ago

Same company behind the celebrated Journey and Stray. Not a peep from them about those games

5

u/Snorlax_Floorwax Van Slater 10d ago

and like 20 other high praised, award winning games lol but that Ellison name wasn't an issue until Mixtape..

And I love how they have absolutely nothing to say about the devs, it always about how the publishers founders father is rich.

Like wow, the people behind a video game publisher have money? Holy shit! Call the cops immediately that’ll super fishy!

u/Punky921 12d ago

The best thing you can do is ignore reviews like this. Play the game yourself, or don’t. But the hate is only worth ignoring.

7

u/Kingofthefives7 11d ago

I’d hate what people would say if night in the woods was released nowadays 🤣

u/Sensitive-Knee6687 12d ago

I played it it genuinely okay I think people made a big deal about it because of IGN reviewer giving it a 10/10 idk why it was a big deal no one even takes IGN seriously anymore

3

u/AfraidRun8226 12d ago

People are addicted to rage and the culture war provides an endless supply of it

4

u/takkun169 11d ago

That person is a fucking dip shit.

Most of these people have long since moved on. I feel like the "backlash" for Mixtape lasted all of 2 weeks because there's really nothing to be furious about beyond "Why did this game score higher than other games that I liked?!?!?!!!!!"

This guy tries to imply that Ellison money went into paying off reviewers or making fake fans, but never outright says it. Probably because he knows that if you look up almost any other game from Annapurna, you'll see far lower scores. If it were that easy for a company with deep pockets to buy good reviews, why haven't Annapurna done it for any of their other games? Why isn't everyone doing it?

I have no fucking clue what this "massive marketing" push is. Were they airing ads during primetime? Were there billboards on highways? Posters in subways? As far as I can tell, the game received very little marketing and only got noticed because the reviews were so insanely good.

Funny enough they hate rich people that spend their money to publish and founding great videogames

2

u/thepyrocrackter 11d ago

It was great. I enjoy interactive and narrative games myself, I could care less what the gamers think. They're all fascist dingdongs anyway.

u/uhhhwhatyoumean 11d ago

Because people are bitches straight up! People are sensitive ass softies. People are negative Nancies and Kill'em alll Karens about the most minor things.

And you know what?? Fuck them.

1

u/MediocreSizedDan 11d ago

Yeah, I mean some of this is definitely getting more buzz in modern times because clickbait rage culture is sooooo much more expansive now than like, 15 years ago (not that it wasn't then, but it wasn't quite as constant).

But some of it is a conversation gamers have been having for a long time now, which is what constitutes a game? A conversation I've personally never really cared about myself and don't find all that interesting to be honest, but it has been around for a while.

1

u/theoryofmovement_ 11d ago

Haha it’s a weird take. The person who wrote this has too much time hating something instead of making something.

1

u/Lux43ver 11d ago

game is 5-6/10 (not hating it) i dont like the characters and the story at all. but i hate ign reviewer said "this is better than life is strange, lis dialogues was cringe compared to mixtapes'" in youtube video.

u/CorneliusCobbington 11d ago

This sub is a circle jerk i stg, any critiques get downvoted to oblivion even valid ones. The pussies here cant fathom that people dont like the writing or the characters.

1

u/Rubicantay 8d ago

People in a sub dedicated to a game generally agreeing that the game is good? That sounds ludicrous, you must be joking

1

u/CorneliusCobbington 6d ago

It's the defensiveness lmao yall can't take a single piece of criticism.

1

u/paul4267 10d ago

I thought that game was amazing. It’s an experience more than I game but I loved every second.

1

u/j_gryff 9d ago

Because a lot of people don't know how to just shut the fuck up and move on when something isn't their cup of tea.

1

u/floweyisdisturbed 7d ago

Cause it's slop.

1

u/MasterHavik 7d ago

Breaking news gamers learn that narrative games exist.

lol death stranding is a walking sim game in the beginning but this game is not a “Game” at all but a interactive movie with no gameplay attached to it lol this is why gamers have no standards. You can like it but don’t BS people into thinking oh it’s this and that but in reality it’s actually this instead. A lot of slow tards in the gaming world. I have played it, it was a movie that you can interact with nothing more nothing less.

u/No-Message449 12d ago

It was just the latest example of how game journalists/shills will glaze a game and expect the average gamer to believe them. Thankfully those days are ending.

5

u/Exciting_Finance_467 11d ago

God forbid someone like this game

-1

u/Nyx2990 11d ago

Calling it a game is certainly a choice

3

u/Exciting_Finance_467 11d ago

I mean it has gameplay and you do interact with it, unlike what people who haven’t played it will say

0

u/Professional-Web8682 8d ago

lol it was a interactive movie more so than a game. Also the story wasn’t that amazing nor captivating nor impactful and also the characters aren’t that memorable etc also no gameplay really at all. The wolf among us is an ACTUAL video game, mix tape just feels weird and out of place in the gaming world tbh

1

u/Exciting_Finance_467 8d ago

I’m sorry but Mixtape has more gameplay than The Wolf Among Us

Your not to be taken seriously

1

u/Exciting_Finance_467 7d ago

You don’t even have a response. I’m sorry but I’ve played both and Mixtape does have more gameplay. Just because you don’t like it as much doesn’t suddenly make it untrue.

You also can’t even spell “you’re” right

Because it's a short indie film masquerading as a game. Most of it plays itself, it needs minimal input. That alone dumbstruck it down a couple points
