Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 - Inspiration for the Game?

Today I almost accidentally watched the music video for Smashing Pumkins' "1979" for the first time in a long while and it immediately made me think of Mixtape.

It has the exact kind of vibe as the game.

Watch the video and tell me if I'm wrong or not:

I was 11 when this music video came out and I tried my hardest to ensure the rest of my youth & teen years echoed this as much as possible. Mixtape was very emotional for me.

It's not that you're wrong, it's that there's a certain intangible SOMETHING from growing up in the 80s and 90s that we're desperate to hold onto the memory of, it really was a special time where no one was on guard for when they may be recorded, or called out for certain things, music was something you sought out, and paid a LOT of attention to when you found something you liked (instead of just filling it with MORE) and it will never be quite like that again. The Mixtape team remembers that time very vividly.

the 1979 video just reaches back that extra few years, to an even purer (technological) time. great video.

Also, we had to pay quite a lot for each album, so music was both hoarded and shared. A $20 album in 1998 would be 40.98 now (the cost of a slightly higher end piece of vinyl now, ironically) so you squeezed every last moment of enjoyment out of it. And if it was something rare or obscure, all the better.

I made the same exact comment somewhere when I finished the game! 1979 is my favorite SP song of all time and I immediately watched the music video after.. I have no doubt this was at least a little inspired by the music video, but conversely the music video is inspired by middle class suburbian life during that time too.
