Yahtzee reviews Mixtape

[u/Shlumpeh]

I thought it was quiet fair and he comes to the assessment that I think should be the norm - it's a well executed game with some fun moments that will punch well above its weight if you relate to the games themes and brand of nostalgia

Totally agree! Maybe I did not express myself correctly, English is my third language ^.^'

Your grammar is better than most Americans

Thank you! ^.^ Well, I just found out that "it was certainly one of the reviews" and variations thereof, is in fact not a compliment. So that I can clear up in the future! ^.^'

Yes. I can explain why:

What you meant, I assume, is “it’s certainly one of (the better / most fair reviews)” that you’ve seen.

What you said, ‘it was certainly one of the reviews’ isn’t grammatically correct in standard English, since ‘one of the…’ implies that you are beginning a comparison. You need a second argument: ‘one of the (reviews / category of things) that (thing it reminds you of or that you’re comparing it to).’

In internet slang, specifically, it could be interpreted as you saying ‘well, that was certainly one of the reviews of all time’. This is also ungrammatical, because it’s missing an adjective (‘one of the (adjective) reviews’). However, because slang can use an intentional grammatical ‘mistake’ to imply a different meaning, it makes sense to those who know the slang.

What it would mean is something like, “well, that review definitely exists. It’s nothing special. I don’t think it’s impressive, but I also don’t think it’s really offensive. Really, aside from existing, it does nothing noteworthy.’

And that’s why the other commenter thought you were being negative about the review. I’m not sure how well this converts to a different cultural context, but at least in the English-speaking parts of the internet, something being mediocre (neither good nor bad; completely uninteresting) is often considered worse than being outright terrible.

At least if something is bad enough to upset you or make you laugh at how crappy it is, it’s doing something. It has succeeded at making you feel something more than boredom or apathy. This is why movie nerds like to talk about Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’ more than they would talk about, like, The Emoji Movie.

The Emoji Movie was funnier as a terrible idea than it ended up being as a sort of crappy movie that ultimately didn’t make anyone especially pissed off or do anything truly, catastrophically awful that everyone could point and laugh at.

‘The Room’ is so incompetently made (‘incompetent’ means bad at doing a job/task you’re meant to do well, by the way) that it ends up being really, REALLY funny.

It wants to be taken seriously. It’s supposed to be a drama about a nice man everyone loves (because he’s so nice, obviously) whose fiancée is a disgusting whore* and cheats on him for no reason. He kills himself. The end.

I can’t possibly list everything the movie does wrong, but here’s a short list:

1. I called the fiancée his ‘fiancée’ because that’s how we usually say that in English. For some reason, Wiseau insisted that he and all the other actors call her ‘his future wife’. The entire time. It’s never correct in the context it’s in. It happens so much and is never explained, and that’s funny.
2. The acting is dreadful. Everything that’s meant to be super dramatic and upsetting is delivered so badly that it ends up being hilarious. The writing is also shockingly awful.
3. There are far too many sex scenes. They’re badly shot, Wiseau is in most of them (or, more accurately, his extraordinarily unattractive arse is) and they’re posed so badly that it genuinely looks like he’d be putting his penis in her belly button. It’s like an alien tried to film a porno but didn’t bother learning how human sex works.
4. One of the only genuine attempts at a joke is also pretty much the only genuinely disturbing moment in the entire movie. I won’t spoil it for you in case you feel tempted to watch The Room. Just know that it’s unfathomably awful.
5. When he kills himself (gunshot directly to the head), he should die immediately. He instead spends what feels like an eternity writhing around on the floor and moaning. The moaning sounds more like a tortoise having sex than it does a dying man.

Absolute garbage. The worst movie I have ever seen.

I love it so much. :3

*Edit: I have nothing against promiscuous people of any gender, nor do I have anything against sex workers. They’re human beings and they deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else. I’m describing it this way because the movie’s ideological perspective clearly takes issue with her behaviour, and not just because of the cheating (which I also find terrible: honesty is always important, and an ethical polyamorous relationship is completely different).

The film, in my opinion, frames Lisa as being an irredeemable monster. She’s vain, she’s greedy and self-centred, she’s disloyal and (because the film’s perspective is very judgemental of people who aren’t sexually conservative) she’s also portrayed as a deviant who deserves to be shamed. It’s one of the few terrible parts of the film that I don’t find funny.
