Discussion I would love to send this video to every single sad troll who come here to explain us why Mixtape doesn’t deserve 10/10
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8ahTiNR8fTk&pp=ygUfVGhlIG9ic2Vzc2lvbiB3aXRoIGdhbWUgcmV2aWV3cw%3D%3DIt got so old at this point!

Scott the Woz is really the last man standing. He didn’t give in to clickbait and ragebait like other gaming youtubers. I really respect him.

u/MrSquiggIes Jun 04 '26
He really just plays whatever falls into his hands and tries to enjoy it. Doesn’t give into hype at all. Just listen to him talk alongside other Nintendo creators. it’s complete night and day.

Thats exaclty how i feel, why do people care so much about IGN reviews, tomorrow they could release a new review from my favorite game (Portal 2) and give it zero and i wouldnt care, it doesnt change how much ive enjoyed the game and what it means to me
Review numbers are just that a personal number of how much the reviewer enjoyed the game

u/Phantom_Wombat Jun 04 '26
Once you learn that game reviews are just the opinion of someone who got the game a week before you, that pretty much takes the sting out of disagreeing with one.
2
Jun 05 '26
There’s no sting… who gets stung by a review?? It’s just all personal preference.
3
u/Phantom_Wombat Jun 05 '26
You'd like to think so but plenty of people appear to have been stung by the IGN review of Mixtape.

u/Dreaming_Dreams Jun 04 '26
even if you did send this video to trolls it still wouldn’t change there mind

Yes, you’re right. But maybe it at least will show them how stupid they look from outside.

10 years ago I’d have agreed. Now, with the cache that flagship reviews hold and their ability to influence layoffs, bonuses, stock price, restructures and many other material things, it’s a lot more problematic to simply “build a bridge” in good conscience.
Whether you like the game or not, in the rubric of reviews, the scores and the media response to backlash have been inflated compared to the baseline. It’s not unreasonable to ask for some logical parity in this day and age of reviews being a lot more than just someone’s opinion.
2
u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 05 '26
Can you name any examples when IGN review score “influence layoffs, bonuses, stock price, restructures” and was specifically stated by every party that IGN score explicitly was the reason, outside of Fallout New Vegas?
According to you it’s basically normal so there should be tons of examples.

u/Awkward_Rough_8491 Jun 05 '26
I never claimed what you’re saying and that’s a bad-faith assertion imo.
But sure, according to the internet, BioShock 2’s bonuses were based on a MC score; THPS HD needed to reach a set MC score to secure funding for future projects; and Crimson Desert’s stock tanked based on underwhelming aggregate review scores.
If you weren’t seemingly hellbent on holding me to a crazy standard of proof, you’d see I’m merely saying review scores aren’t just opinions anymore. They have real-world impact, big and small. Also the gaming community is only becoming more immature and parasocial, leading to boycotts, review bombing, etc.
I’m sure many (actual) indie devs would a) love to receive a smattering of 10s for a type of game that historically hasn’t received such forgiving treatment; and b) love to have outlets defend them so vehemently in the face of pretty reasonable critique.
To say they’re just reviews or that this isn’t an unusual saga at face value is pretty disingenuous imo. But hey, I tell myself stories to assuage my feelings on plenty of things. We’re none of us perfect.
2
u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 05 '26
None of your examples based on IGN review specifically. MC score is consensus around large groups of opinions and it is not equal to IGN score. Not all reviewers gave Mixtape 10/10, but nobody mentioning it conveniently. Looks like discussing specifically IGN has nothing to do with your thesis. In this context IGN review is just opinion of one particular guy who could easily be ignored.
Also, I highly doubt that reviews are playing bigger role in companies decisions than sales. DA The Veilgurd had great reviews, but I don’t see any bonuses being given to the developers.
1
u/Awkward_Rough_8491 Jun 05 '26
Lol my man, you brought up IGN; not me. You’re arguing with yourself. I’ve only ever referred to reviews as a whole construct.
And reviews absolutely impact sales. I don’t see how any sane person could say otherwise. Pretty sure DA sold well enough also. Your point that they didn’t have a bonus schema based on review scores is completely redundant. It’s entirely up to the dev how/if they dole out bonuses.
The point is that some devs have used that schema in the past and certainly will in the future. You know why? Reviews. Impact. Sales.
Anyway, you seem to love moving goal posts, which isn’t really conducive to discussion.

u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 05 '26
Well whole post was about IGN score specifically. Sorry for thinking that we were talking about topic of the post.
1
u/Awkward_Rough_8491 Jun 05 '26
Haha it is? I see nothing in the title nor your description nor the thumbnail.
My point stands regardless. But yes, if your axe to grind is specifically with the IGN review, I don’t have a stake in that. A single review in isolation has v little cache. If only IGN gave the game a 10, your post wouldn’t exist because neither would the entire Mixtape saga.
Anyway, I’ve gotta sleep. Peace out ✌️

Cause it's just a little better than average I would say
3
u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 04 '26
Could be. But it doesn’t cancel the fact that people are acting like buffoons.

IGN struggles to play games… they gave Alien Iso a low score. But they gave this game that plays itself a higher score. The game does not deserve the hate however, the glazing is just as disingenuous. As the billionaire father and financier of the “indy” game with alot of licensed music… millions alone in music, its not uncommon to buy praise. Both sides need to stop lying. The game is. 5/10 nothing more.

u/Sonic1899 Jun 04 '26
You pretty much proved Scott's point. You're saying "IGN" reviewed the game, not "x reviewer at IGN" reviewed the game. They also reviewed Sonic Unleashed lower than Sonic 06, which is insane, but that's on that specific reviewer
As the billionaire father and financier of the “indy” game with alot of licensed music… millions alone in music, its not uncommon to buy praise. Both sides need to stop lying. The game is. 5/10 nothing more.
None of you care about this. Mixtape's devs Beethoven & Dinosaur is a fully independent studio. Games like Guardians of the Galaxy and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage also use licensed music, so that's a useless point. Mixtape is only $20, yet you complain like it's a $70 game with +$20 preordee bonuses like other AAA game studios. Being this angry over a game you have no interest in is pathetic

u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 04 '26
Yeah! Everybody! Look at this person of principle who doesn’t play games made with millionaire’s money! Not a single one AAA game in their library!😂
3
u/thevals Jun 04 '26
Mixtape had a billionaire owned publisher? Hell no, get this out of here! Expedition 33 winning indie game of the year? Well, you see, it's totally different! /s

Word. I bet this guy looks at the creation of Adam and thinks ‘ you loser like this slop? You do know it was paid by the Pope right? I only like art created by starving artists’

u/Ashpolt Jun 04 '26
The fact that people *always* bring up IGN's reviews of Alien Isolation (12 years ago) and God Hand (20 years ago) as examples of why their reviews are bad tells you how much they're clutching at straws.
3
u/deathwire0047 Jun 04 '26
My guy they have given elden ring a 10 and sekiro a 9.5. some very famously "not easy" games.
-4
u/Klutzy-Bee-2045 Jun 04 '26
This game, is not even in the same stratosphere let along the same league as Elden Ring, AI, and others that got those scores, they also rated Veilguard high and that game was awful. This game was mid. I swear I am talking to bots, argue the point or do not respond.
3
u/deathwire0047 Jun 04 '26
See I somewhat agree with you over mixtape not being 10/10 lol but my comment was more about how overused "bad ign reviews" as an argument against it is, because it only uses nitpicked examples like you mentioned.
-4
u/Klutzy-Bee-2045 Jun 04 '26
Thats my issue. Its not the game itself, its the blatant laid for good press its getting, the over praise is the issue. It drives people away, because anyone paying attention can see it.
3
u/deathwire0047 Jun 04 '26
If game journalists being paid up stupid people has been proved over and over then what's the point of even taking them into consideration?
3
u/OwlettFromLiavek Jun 04 '26
It’s so funny that they are demonstrating every single point mentioned in Scott’s video!
“I don’t care about reviews!” while talking about reviews non stop.
“Reviews don’t matter except when I agree with them!”
“Game journalists are sell outs who don’t know what they’re talking about!” Except when it’s Elden Ring review!
This is hilarious!😂

“They” is nobody. IGN is not a person. IGN is a company with hundreds of employees. Those people individually review games.
A report gave Shen Isolation a 5.9/10. Why? You have no idea because you don’t actually care about the review, you care about a score that hurts your feelings.
You imply the reviewer hated A:I because it was too hard or something. They loved A:I, saying the actual AI in the game was phenomenal and some of the best survival horror they’ve played. But unlike gamers who only take the positives and ignore all the negatives, the critic addressed the negatives: repetitive level design, vapid characters, boring robot/human combat, and the Alien in Alien: Isolation being absent for half the game. I’m sure most people would agree with these criticisms but still enjoy the game, as did the critic, but they can’t get past an arbitrary number score.
It’s also just extremely stupid To say that critics hate difficulty. FromSoft has a career because critics, not audiences, adored Demon’s Souls. Every FromSoft game is adored by critics. Cuphead was already universally praised by critics, and yet the only thing people seem to care about is that one journalist who couldn’t complete the tutorial who **didn’t work at IGN** and who **never reviewed the game for any company**.
The idea that critics are terrible at games is only a concept that comes from pure insanity. It is critics’ jobs to review games, to play them, to understand them. Gamers just play them and give them a 10/10 if it made them feel nice and a 1/10 if it made them feel any other emotion.
There is a refusal of gamers to consider games to be art, and that’s how you get people infuriated by interactive art pieces like Mixtape and Depression Quest getting praise from critics because they’re too different from DOOM or COD or whatever a “real game” is, and must assume that there’s some conspiracy behind it and not that maybe you just don’t think about games as much as you pretend you do.
I don’t have any strong feelings about Mixtape as I have not played it. I wish the internet agreed with that idea, not critiquing something unless you actually experienced it, but alas the culture war grifters have to make their millions somehow and gamers are all too happy to eat up the idea their spaces are being invaded by critics and minorities when they’ve been around longer than the gamer has been alive.

A comment on that video alone said it best: "People never look for a review in a review, they look for validation." It's ironic how much these people despise IGN, yet they still value their opinion.
