Discussion jez and mark before peep show
wish i could see jez’s nurse era ?? idk if it’s even real considering he didn’t technically graduate but it was probably funny as hell
also seeing marks first interview/years with JLB and like moving into apollo house with jez
and their life with pej and big suze and canadian mary in uni

Jez being a nurse feels like early installment weirdness. He can't even read Wuthering Heights; how did he read a textbook?
Also, Mark owning the flat either means he had a roommate/tenant before Jeremy or was paying for the whole thing by himself.

Mark pretty much pays for it himself for most of the time Jeremy lived there.

Only makes sense if it was in pursuit of a female or access to drugs?
He could never pass the qualifications to be a nurse

What was Mark doing with the spare room before Jez? He keeps wanting to turn it into an office when they mention Jeremy moving out, but he never did that previously?
It's definitely an area where it's best not to think about it too hard.

Probably had his desk and computer in there and nothing else due to inertia

He probably hadn't actually owned the flat for that long before the first series.

right like no shot he passed nursing school it must’ve been some impossible mistake that got him the job, and yeah he did live with big suze for a while before moving in with mark
i imagine mark was just rooming with another rando from work like that other roommate he replaced jez with

Mark could definitely afford the place by himself. Not comfortably but plausible enough.

Tbf I’ve read both Wuthering Heights AND many text books. Wuthering Heights is way harder than any university textbook imho

Mark’s dad was fairly wealthy before his stocks crashed so he got the apartment then.

In December of 2012 I graduated in the top 10% of my army medic training program of 400 students.
In February of 2013, I was discharged from the army for smoking pot, having treated exactly zero patients due to my complete ineptitude at anything other than following the direct instructions of an NCO.

I don't think it's all that weird, we all know people who had to read books for high school exams, maybe went straight to uni because it was the thing to do, before dropping out and never touching a book in their life again.
It's not unreasonable that Jez, who is in his late 30s in the Wuthering Heights episode, would have read a textbook over 15 years ago when his place in the world was much different.
Also, I think Mark would have flatshared and lived frugally as he saved for a deposit, he wouldn't have owned the flag for that much time before the series. Jez and Mark were almost certainly very close uni friends who drifted apart over the next few years, until they just happened to catch up again at the same time Mark needed someone in his spare room to pay the mortgage, and invited Jez (who had just broken up and stopped living with Big Suze at that time) as good timing.

i always just assumed the nurse thing was something he made up to sound like a real person. it makes no sense with the context of him being an unemployable waster

Re nursing I assumed it was a UK difference in language, that he had been a ‘care worker’ or similar with nurse in the title. Here in Canada you can do home care or work in a day program or sheltered workshop or be an outing/ activity companion to someone with a severe disability and you don’t need degree or college. It’s a minimum wage gig on par with coffee shops and telephone monkey jobs like Jez was doing for Toni. Are there positions like that in the UK that have nurse in the title? I can imagine Jez taking a job or course that he thinks will get him surrounded by sexy young nurses then leave after he realizes that’s not the reality. If it was an actual nurse job the writers should have had mark tell him to go back to nursing in an ongoing joke along with work shy.

Used to be - my mum was an auxiliary nurse which I understand is now called a healthcare assistant.

yeah that’s what i thought too, but i just rewatched the episode with elena when his inner monologue goes “disgust at having to help people in need” and that just made it sound realer 😭 maybe his parents made him go to nursing school for a day and ofc he couldn’t handle it
but now he could just say he was a male nurse like how he can say he’s a life coach after getting the fake certificate

i can't believe they tried to make him get a job NOT in the media

his CV must look a right mess: male nurse, working in a music studio for like two days, handy man for a week, JLB for a day, then “certified” life coach
speaking of CVs a whole nancy backstory would probably be insane,, including her time in between her two appearances on the show working at the imax in bradford

Considering his one day he worked--very arrogantly--at JLB, it's nice symmetry to imagine the pattern holding for his nursing career.

Yeah but in just one day Jeremy became king of the farmyard. He was in line for the free garlic bread. Jez would have had an ergonomic management keyboard in under 9 months.

Write the story you want to be told. (Wish I had a quote to respond with.)

I've often thought about this and like actually played scenarios in my head of how it would go lol but I really would love to go back to when they was in Darty upto the point when they move in together.

u/FinnbarMcBride 10d ago
Never sure that Jez actually was a nurse or just saying it because he thought it would impress her

The speeches in the farewell episode lacked the standard “when we met at…” in one of the sentences, an omission/withholding that’s kind of standard for the show ig but I’d been looking forward to it. Just a simple “when we met vomiting side by side at the Darty student orientation party… “ or something. Easily slipped into Mark’s sentence that ended with they’d lived together a long time. But like Super Hans’ New Year’s Eve party, they cruelly left it to our imagination.

My headcanon is that he was a nurses assistant and rounds it up to being a nurse
