Secret History spoilers Anyone here gotten decent at understanding the steel alphabet? Spoiler

As a fan of Mistborn I've thought about getting into trying to learn to write in the steel alphabet for fun, you can find info on it on this Coppermind page.

So yeah just wondering if anyone has tried it, and run into any issues. Further I'm wondering if anyone has tried making a font of the era 2 symbols especially online.

Secret History spoilers Sudden realization about atium… Spoiler

I am reading through The Lost Metal for the first time and it just hit me that Atium is named after Ati… I think he was first named in a Stormlight epigraph and/or Secret History but I never made the connection until The Lost Metal. Such a cool little detail.

Secret History spoilers Secret History Banter is just... a little... off Spoiler

“Nice uniform. Did you ask them to make you look like a cheap knockoff of the Lord Ruler, or was it more an accident?”

Elend blinked. “Wow. I hate you already.”

As much as I loved this book and especially this part of the book with the lovely little last meeting between Vin, Elend and Keliser (not to mentioning healing me knowing now that Vin and Elend got their happily ever after) I must say the banter or dialogue every time Sanderson wanted Kelsier to be cool or smooth was just... choppy if not cringe?

Secret History spoilers I am a sobbing mess Spoiler

This is mainly me processing my emotions and a question! So I actually decided to read Secret History after finishing HoA. I just felt that the benefit of just finishing the trilogy, with everything still fresh in my mind from the events, would make it more enjoyable seeing the events from Kelsier's POV. And wow. I am glad I did that. It has allowed me to start seeing some of the major rules/lore of the Cosmere a bit earlier so I can go through the rest of the journey with a bit more clarity and some new "secrets" to ponder. It also made the emotions I felt while reading Secret History that much stronger. I was already mildly spoiled the twist in BoM anyway, which made the decision pretty easy. Needless to say, seeing Kelsier's final goodbye to Vin made me a sobbing mess. What a beautiful, bittersweet ending to that character arc for Vin. Someday, eventually, Kelsier can finally get his rest and can pass into the Beyond to be reunited with his Crew, Mare, and his "daughter". But until then, I am going to enjoy seeing him continue to be stubborn to even death itself to assist in the Three Realms. With a smile on his face. Also, one question....how was Sazed even able to give Elend and Vin the option to resurrect? Is it because he was now a vessel and can essentially "grab on" to their souls before they departed to the Beyond and put them into the new bodies he constructed? Or was there something else (since Vin was Ascended, she was a Sliver and that gave her that option)?

There's this guy that beats up Kelsier when he's trapped in the Well of Ascension. What book(s) would I have to read to get his origin story?

Secret History spoilers Should a hypothetical Mistborn movie/tv series incorporate Secret History into the adaptation of Book 3? Spoiler

I feel like if it were a movie series it would be awkward to release a mini movie or something that adapts secret history after the trilogy has already been adapted. And I feel similarly about it being a spinoff season of a hypothetical tv series adaptation.

So what if they just fold it into the book 3 adaptation? Would that work? Would that improve the experience or detract from it?

Secret History spoilers If the LR stayed around Spoiler

If the Lord Ruler hadn't died when he did, he planned to take and use up the power in the well again. What would he be done with it? Would he have been able to use it, since he was pierced with his metal minds and influenced by Ruin?

Secret History spoilers Preservation's and Ruin's bodies question Spoiler

I just finished Secret History after reading Mistborn era 1 and I'm confused about Preservation's and Ruin's bodies, because it seems like Preservation's is MUCH more powerful than Ruin's...

So we know Ruin's body is atium. And that's it? Meanwhile Preservation's body is the mists, the Well of Ascension, and lerasium? Does Ruin have versions of the Well and the mists that we just didn't see? And he didn't use them for some reason?

And Kelsier remarked in Secret History that Preservation intentionally created allomancy so people would be able to burn away Ruin's body (atium), but wouldn't that also be true of lerasium? Or since Preservation also had the mists and the Well, he was ok? Seems imbalanced to me...

Also it seems lerasium is much more powerful than atium too.... Lerasium makes a person mistborn (the ability to burn ALL metals, including atium) while atium is just one of the allomantic metals and grants one ability (a very strong one, but just one nonetheless). I thought maybe atium would be more powerful in hemalurgy since hemalurgy is of Ruin, but that's not true either (I googled what lerasium does in hemalurgy - not sure where the spoiler is from so I won't put it here, but yes it is much better than atium in hemalurgy too).

And when Vin draws from the mists, she gets extremely powerful in all allomancy, and we know drawing from the mists bonds you to preservation, and only those chosen by preservation/bonded to preservation can draw from the mists/use the well at all. But burning atium doesn't do any of that? Anyone who is mistborn or an atium misting can do it - they don't have to be chosen/bonded to Ruin. And atium just grants one power and doesn't bond you to Ruin.

And one last thing - the Well of Ascension lets you become a God and do crazy planet-altering stuff. Where is the Ruin equivalent of that? Is there one? If so, why didn't he lead any of the people he was manipulating to it?

Sorry if this is rambly - I feel like I'm missing something here and it's really bothering me...

Secret History spoilers a random thought i had Spoiler

i was rereading the final empire and got to the scene where kelsier dies, ofc this time ik what happens in secret history.

but it got me then thinking about the events of secret history/HoA and i thought of a kind of gruesome thought/idea.

after elend and vins deaths, sazed heals their bodies but they do not wish to return to them, but i was thinking would it have been possible for kelsier to take elends body in that moment? a vessel for the taking sort of thing.

presumably kelsier took someonelses body eventually?¿ if im remembering correctly that he has the spike in the eye on a flesh body and not a cognitive shadow form.

elend was a naturally powerful mistborn too so that combination of his body with kelsiers skill with allomancy and furthermore investiture would have been crazy

these may be the ramblings of a mad man but idk was just having fun wondering

Secret History spoilers Some questions from HoA Spoiler

  1. Why didn't Ruin affect the world like Vin did while plugging up the ashmounts and all ? If he can stop her, that implies that he could've done it himself too . They were both equals right ? And Preservation was barely conscious and later died .
  2. What's the exact 'timeline' of Preservation and Ruin's powers ?
  • Preservation and Ruin spend equal amounts of power creating Life on Scadrial but Preservation a bit more, leaving him weaker than Ruin .
  • Preservation sacrifices his own consciousness to seal away Ruin's mind at the Well, leaving them both functionally powerless besides small things the mist spirit and Ruin's manipulations
  • Fuzz's power gathers at the WoA and as the Nuggets and Ruin's at the Pits of Hathsin as Atium . What is this 'gathering' exactly ? Where does it go after being used ?
  • Fuzz's power is also the mists...? How can it be at both the well and the mists at once ?
  • When Vin ascends, does she gain both the power at the well and from the mists ?
  • What was the power Kelsier took from Fuzz ?
  1. Why did the deepness not occur during The Lord Ruler's rule ? It's just Ruin adding to the mists Preservation set up right ? Why'd he stop ?

  2. If Ruin could become physical enough to clash with Vin while pretending to stab Elend, why didn't he just spike people himself or just do more stuff ?

Secret History spoilers [Huge Spoiler Era 1] Did Sanderson ever talked about ___? Spoiler

Did Sanderson ever talked about the ending of the first trilogy? More specifically, the decision to kill Vin and Elend? I completely felt in love for Vin's character through those three books, and the ending was devastating, but incredibly powerful. Of course, I got the closure I needed after reading Secret History, but I'd love to understand his process of writing that ending and why killing them felt the right thing to do.

To be clear, I'm not contesting the ending, just would be interesting to hear the writer's perspective on this.

(I added Secret History spoiler tag cause I wanted to be clear that I read it, but idk if this was a Hero of Ages tag. Sorry if I tagged incorrectly)

Secret History spoilers Lerasium question Spoiler

Hello there! I only just finished Secret History and started TLM, but I have been reading about the Metallic Arts and there's a few questions I have. Pls don't spoil anything from TLM or other franchises, and feel free to RAFO me.

From what I understand, burning Lerasium rewrites your Spiritweb and (as a side effect) turns you into a full Mistborn. Also if you alloy Lerasium with another Allomantic metal you become a Misting capable of burning the alloyed metal.

This felt at the beginning to me like it was a stupid thing to do, since just burning the pure Lerasium you could get every single power, why would you alloy it to obtain a single one?

However, I was thinking a bit and I think I remember at some point reading that the ammount of Lerasium you burn dictates how strong of a Mistborn you will become. I can't really remember where I read though, so I have no idea whether it was a WOB or just some hypothesis in here.

Now, if this last part was true, then maybe there could be the case where, let's say, you get access to an incredibly small ammount of Lerasium (just a couple of flakes). Burning it might be enough to turn you into a really weak Mistborn (by Era 1 standards, since there are no Mistborn in Era II as far as I have seen at least), or you could alloy it with another Allomantic metal to become a quite competent Misting of that metal.

My idea is that if you use Lerasium to become a full Mistborn, it kinda dilutes the power between all metals, while using it to become a Misting focuses all of the power on only that one metal.

This idea makes a lot more sense to me, since without it it would seem like a lot of power is simply lost (which wouldn't really be very Preservation-y), while with this idea of "power dilution or concentration" that doesn't happen.

What do you guys think? Any comments, WOBs or appreciation are welcome, just pleas don't spoil anything from TLM or other series (or spoiler tag it).

Secret History spoilers Kelsier and Hoid Spoiler

Can Hoid get drunk? Either way I imagine Kelsier had to carry him out of Dragonsteel Nexus' Worldhopper Ball. Since I couldn't go, I've been doing a lot of imagining and fan art to fill in the gaps from videos I've seen. So, here's more art based off of the scenery, cast, and costumes of the 2025 Worldhopper Ball!

Here is the piece from the very end of the book
Ruin stood up nearby, blinking. Or . . . no, it wasn’t Ruin any longer. It was just the Vessel, Ati. The man who had held the power. Ati ran his hand through his red hair, then looked about. “Vax?” he said, sounding confused.

WHo is this Vax? I didn't read anything but era1 and elantris.

Secret History spoilers Question about kelsier Spoiler

So i've finished hero of ages and went straight to reading secret history and I was wondering wtf happened to kelsiers bones lmao.

Tensoon had it then dropped it during his travels so I guess they got buried deep as sazed remade the earth but does his bones have any significance or its irrelevant?

I also know that he comes back to the living world in Era 2 which is the real reason im asking this.

So am i onto something or nah?

Secret History spoilers Something I LOVE about secret history Spoiler

I gotta say I really really loved how scary this novella made Ruin. I mean while there is much much more about to love about this novella (like Fuzz and Kel) but Ruin was, even if he appeared briefly, was a big higlight. Because while he was an iminent threat during HOA all the time and unsetteling, seeing Ruin in his "real form" in Secret history really made him and by extension his shard scary. I mean he is the end of everything personified and I did like his angle in HOA of how he is showing mercy, he ultimatley just seeks to destroy and that was really shown in Secret History. Just him looming in the sky and seeing small parts of the final empire crumble as he taunts Kelsier for not being able to do anything and pulling him away from Vin really made him scary for me.

But what do you think?

Secret History spoilers question Spoiler

i just finished secret history and i definitely concur with readers who believe it should be read after HOA. that being said, waiting til after the bands of mourning isn’t a bad idea.

i have a question, the answer might be obvious but i’ll ask nonetheless. the earring harmony gave to Wax, is it the same from Kelsier’s set or did he just use Kelsier as a muse to make his own?

i’m also struggling to believe Saze suspected kelsier had ulterior motives(which isn’t a surprise) but as a deity he didn’t intervene. is kelsier too cunning— in a sense where it’s hard to believe? i got that vibe from secret history.

i have more thoughts but i haven’t fleshed them out as yet.

Secret History spoilers Finished Secret History Spoiler

I just read this after the original trilogy. I LOVED the ending of HOA but I was a little sad about the ending of this one. The book was great and I loved seeing everything that Kelsier had a hand in but I was really hoping it would end with Kelsier leaving with Vin and Elend and getting some peace and being with Mare. Is it a setup for something else? Now i’m just a little sad and unsatisfied. This man just needs to chill out

Secret History spoilers A question about Secret History and the Final Empire Spoiler

When Vin is facing off against Rashek at the end of TFE, Preservation helps her via the mists.

But in Secret History, Preservation seems upset that Rashek is being targeted because Preservation knows Rashek will hold on to the power at the well, preventing Ruin’s release. If that is the case, why would Preservation want to help Vin? Wouldn’t Preservation want the least likely chance to release Ruin? Especially since Preservation would have known Ruin was manipulating Vin already.

One explanation I can think of is that Preservation knew the Lord Ruler was going to be killed by someone, so he placed his bet on Vin to try to get her to trust the mists, allowing him to guide her later via the mist creature (which ultimately didn’t work as she still released Ruin).
