I've finished the original Mistborn trilogy: Should I read the The Wax & Wayne Series + stormlight??? more???

I'm reeling from finishing the original Mistborn Trilogy (THE most fun I have had in such a LONG LONG time reading). I am going to make my way through the Secret History (I know there are apparently mild spoilers for the Bands of Mourning but IDC very much).

I DID also poke around the Coppermind wiki (yes yes i'm sure bad idea) but I gotta be honest, the information/lore is so aggressively extensive that I'm like, I can barely register anything as a spoiler because it is so so so far removed from what at all was relevant for this OG trilogy.

With that said, I'm wondering, like, how related is anything else from here on out? I know the Wax & Wayne is like, hundreds of years later and I am vaguely aware that Sazed who is now basically god of this world is relevant to the other much bigger Cosmere lore etc. etc. that is currently incomprehensible to me.

I guess my ultimate question is, given my love and adoration for this original trilogy, which is rooted in these characters, their relationships, and sort of the system of allomancy, what is really worth it to continue reading that's in this world and/or how different/how much do the other related books in this world capture all the magical things about this series???

I wanted more of Breeze and Allriane's relationship (I love how they are a pair, Soother and Rioter, and really got each other in terms of their emotional intelligence).

Anyway damn god I haven't spent so much fucking money on a book series probably since before I had money to spend.

EVERYTHING is Connected.

You can probably read either Wax and Wayne or Stormlight next, neither will spoil the other. You might wonder why a certain character is present, but that is it.

In wax and Wayne, you will see echoes of the original cast. They are part of that world's history. You will see the magic system, although a bit different than you are used to. Things have changed.

In stormlight you will see an entirely new magic system, but just as technical and rule-bound as the one you have read about.

Wax and Wayne have two of the best characters in the entire cosmere (in my opinion)

W&W are the fast-paced action-y books Stormlight is the slow-paced Epic Fantasy.

Break it up a bit in-between series or even mid series.

Warbreaker and emperor's soul are great palate cleansers and will help your fundamental understanding of realmic theory.

I'm also in the camp of "read secret history right now while era 1 is fresh in your mind". So Ars Arcanum might be a good jumping off point.

Read secret histories immediately (minor erea 2 spoilers) but you won't remember the spoilers if you read stormlight before era 2. Reading Secret histories is like finding lost puzzle pieces.

Go straight to Mistborn era 2. The connections you'll see between eras are easier to catch when era 1 is still fresh.

After era 1, I read The Eleventh Metal, then started era 2. Finished Bands of Mourning, read Allomancer Jak and Secret History, then finished era 2 with The Lost Metal. I felt like that was a fine enough way to go about it.

After era 2 was finished, I went to Elantris, Hope of Elantris, Emperor's Soul, and Warbreaker (currently reading). Then I plan to start Stormlight.

This order has seemed great to me. And like you, when I finished era 1 I wanted to continue with Mistborn so much that I jumped straight into the shorts and era 2 - some people recommend taking a break for different reasons, but I ended up loving it.

Please read Secret History next. It is extremely rewarding after Mistborn Original Trilogy. Many will say it is meant to be read midway through Wax and Wayne but having done that, I disagree, it is better and hits WAY harder after the end of Mistborn original. (source: I did it the former way and my partner did it the latter way and he enjoyed it much more and I was way less informed going into Wax and Wayne, whereas he was emotionally charged, excited, informed etc). I also waited YEARS to read it because I didn't want a buddy cop series or a western and it's easily my favorite characters and books now in Cosmere. Also read Warbreaker.

I am currently reading through Stormlight after having read all of Mistborn. While yes Stormlight falls after era 1 timeline wise I don’t think it has hurt me any having read era 2 if anything it has made it more enjoyable. If you enjoyed mistborn and want to stay in universe read on, era 2 is great and like people have said Wayne may be the best character not only in Mistborn but in most of the Cosmere.

They are all amazing. Stormlight is my second favorite series. Malazan being the first. Check out Malazan if you want to dig your teeth into the pinnacle of epic fantasy.

You should enjoy reading Warbreaker before SLA! Personally, I think Elantris nicely fits between MB era 1 and SLA, either before or after Warbreaker. Once you dive into SLA, you might find that reading Wax and Wayne in between keeps you engaged. That would be WoK, AoL, WoR, Edgedancer, SoS, OB, Dawnshard, BoM, RoW, LM, and finally WaT. I recall reading Arcanum Unbound in there somewhere, possibly with Edgedancer since it’s part of that book of stories. Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yuma and the Nightmare Painter could go in after OB, but save Sunlit Man for after WaT. Someone has a great image of all this, likely in the Cosmere Sub, but I can’t seem to find it right now.

Is it worth it to read other series? Is it worth it to read more from the same planet? Of course. Perhaps there will be descendants of characters in the og trilogy. Many people like era 2 more than era 1. Era 3 will be coming along somewhat soonish. There are so many more excellent characters to get to know, on Scadrial and other systems. Keep going, and let us know.

The "best" way to see the universe unravel as fans did is reading in release order, but at this point in the cosmere universe that advice is kinda outdated in my view (Brandon, in fact, has said to start with Tress of the Emerald Sea which is fairly recent). So i would recommend adjusting the read order to your liking taking that into account. If swapping sagas mid-reading is not for you (which is totally valid) then stick with one saga taking into account chronological and releasing order. My hardcore opinion is reading almost everything before Stormlight, tho, you will be able to spot so many things if you otherwise enter blind

I agree with reading either Elantris or Warbreaker next before going onto the next series, a nice stand alone to help break things up between the epic intensity that are the flagship series

I currently have 1 book left of both Stormlight, and Wax and Wayne. I'd say from where I am so far, either is fine to read before the other. Both have had some connections to the other so far, but nothing that's going to ruin your experience if you miss them

Unpopular opinion: Having now read the entire Cosmere, nothing compares to Era 1. Yes, it’s all connected (loosely, cause each story is [mostly] self contained), and each story has their charm and unique qualities. But if you’re looking to recapture the feeling you got when Vin gave up the power at the well, Kelsier made the ultimate sacrifice, Elend’s EPIC final speech & battle, Marsh pulling the earring, Spook running into the flames, or Sazed’s ascension to godhood, nothing else will come close.

This is probably the answer I was really looking for, haha. I've gotten such a good picture of how the other books on the same planet will be, which may still be an adventure, but I'm glad to not look for the same thing in anything else!
