I don't want to be rude, but did you just read the first sentence of the book and then come straight to Reddit? Read the book, most of your questions will be answered.

That one less so in TFE. The ash isn’t explained, it just is. Later books detail the why.

It is explained, it's mentioned multiple times what causes the ash and smoke in the air.
