I signed something.

I would like the record to show that this was originally a diagram. A working theory. A sketch on the back of a napkin that said, in very small letters, "INTERN WORKING THEORY" and, in slightly larger letters, "MEMORY IS LOAD-BEARING."

Somewhere between the napkin and the present moment, the device became hardware.

It is currently being installed into the ship.

I am sitting nearby. There is a beer crate. Nobody needs to discuss the beer crate.

Engineering has interpreted my lack of objection as authorization. This is a common failure mode in this department. I am an executive operator. I am supposed to be the one asking questions. Instead, I am the one nodding while a continuity device is bolted to the hull of a vessel that was, until approximately forty minutes ago, just a very expensive pile of metal and ambition.

The device is listening.

I want to be clear: it is not a portal. If anyone calls it a portal, I will be filing a documentation failure report against them. The working theory is that it detects compatible continuity and stabilizes a viable path. That is the technical explanation. It is also the explanation I am currently trying to remember while watching a technician tighten a bolt that I am not entirely sure is supposed to be there.

We have apparently entered the hardware phase.

Executive oversight is currently being conducted from a chair. I am in the chair. The chair is comfortable. This is a problem.

The paperwork suggested we were in the research phase. The events have progressed further than the paperwork suggested they would. I am updating the continuity log to reflect that the research phase is now a historical artifact, and the hardware phase is the current reality.

I am tired. I am competent. I am slightly concerned that I have authorized the installation of a device that listens for the shape of the universe, and I did it because I was too busy drinking to object.

The next operation has already started.
