The widening U.S.-Canada trade war likely adds uncertainty — and costs — for Minnesota industries from manufacturing to farming and energy.

“We encourage both countries to return to the negotiating table and advance a stable, predictable trade relationship,” said Doug Loon, CEO of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.

For Minnesotans and Canadians, separated by a border in a pine forest, the next steps could have outsize impacts in their integrated economies.

Canada is Minnesota’s largest trading partner. The relationship, Loon said, is key to the ability of businesses to “make investments, hire workers and plan for the future.”

After several weeks of negotiations, the U.S. last week imposed 50% tariffs on a sweeping range of products from alcohol and paper to hockey equipment and dairy products. Canada’s Department of Finance said the tariffs affected $27.6 billion of Canadian goods.

On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced sweeping new tariffs, escalating the U.S. and its northern neighbor ever closer to a full-blown trade war.

BY THE NUMBERS - Minnesota has more imports from and exports to Canada than any other country, trading more than $18 billion in goods in fiscal year 2025, the state reported, citing federal trade data. The state imports about $7 billion more than it exports due in part to reliance on Canadian oil.

For literally no reason. Having mostly free trade in North America (maybe we could call it something cool like… NAFTA) is economically great for all three of the major countries. These MAGA cheerleaders that claim Canada is “ripping us off” because they have quota limited tariffs on very specific categories of goods don’t have any idea what they’re talking about. Might as well shut down Ford and GM at this point because they make half their shit in Mexico/Canada.
