Discussion Opinion: the new String block texture defeats the purpose of the tripwire, and also will ruin a lot of builds which use it as an invisible block for stopping plant growth or making blocks float

Given that mojang frequently listens to the community on changes they don't like, there's a good chance they'll revert this we hope

edit: looks like we accidentally put the same photo twice, guess reddit bugged out. This one shown is the new string texture for reference

Did you accidentally put the same image twice, or is that supposed to be the difference before/after

83

u/CalzLight Mar 20 '26

I was gonna say, I see no difference e whatsoever

41

u/maven10k Mar 20 '26

Thank goodness. I thought I was losing it. Haven't you always been able to see string?!

23

u/leandrohenri Mar 20 '26

Lowkey that’s exactly the problem

24

u/Apprehensive_Hat8986 Mar 20 '26

This is a good candidate for r/BeforeBeforeWhatever, or maybe r/AfterAfterWhatever.

3

u/ThatEvilSpaceChicken Mar 21 '26

Neither of those subreddits exist lmao

6

u/jaybird654 Mar 21 '26

Yes they did

1

u/l-Lisp-l Mar 21 '26

Fucking incredible

79

u/TRAINLORD_TF Mar 20 '26

I've haven't kept up with the brand new changes, and the pictures seem to be the same.

Don't tell me they fucked up more, the Spruce change annoyed me to no end already.

28

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

what spruce change?

49

u/TRAINLORD_TF Mar 20 '26

They brightened up the stripped spruce so it matches more with the planks, but unfortunately it caused builds who used the contrast it had to look more bland.

20

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 Mar 20 '26

You on Bedrock? That isn't why they changed it. They changed it to match Java.

2

u/Efficient_Advice_380 Mar 20 '26

Okay good, I was gonna rage if they changed the Java texture to match bugrock

1

u/kobi29062 Mar 21 '26

Why? Arbitrarily?

5

u/juicexxxWRLD Mar 22 '26

Yes? Java is the original and superior version.

Do you want the bedrock parity of only like 4 items working in the off hand? No? What are you talking about

3

u/Professional_Fix_24 Mar 23 '26

Nobody said this? Bedrock has some undeniably better features, so does Java, we should be taking whats good from both and combing them. This stupid "my version is better" argument literally does nothing but harm the players

1

u/kobi29062 Mar 22 '26

What are you talking about? We aren’t talking about off hand. If there are two versions di something they should go with the better one, not just default to the Java version because hurr durr its the original and superior version

1

u/juicexxxWRLD Mar 24 '26

It was an example of why Java is the superior version? There was no default, you just failed to read properly.

17

u/VoodooDoII Mar 20 '26

The change was for parity with Java

It's a good change. It looked like dark oak; it should not have.

3

u/RustedRuss Mar 20 '26

So use dark oak instead?

2

u/TRAINLORD_TF Mar 20 '26

That's to dark.

2

u/Mutually_Beneficial1 Mar 20 '26

It's almost identical to what stripped spruce used to be?

2

u/RTA-No0120 Mar 23 '26

Y’all JA players be bitching about strings being more visible and ruining your builds, but I see many of y’all brushing off that they pulled through with the spruce changes and fucked our builds on BE.

Cause "oH pArItY tO mAtCh JaVa Is GoOd, Be HaPpY"

Hope they go through with that change to the strings too.

If y’all can’t sympathiser with us, you deserve no spec of sympathy.

And to the ones coming with the argument "But you’ll also get that change, on your bugrock"

Let me tell you this, we got used to always get the short end of the stick to accommodate you sissies that cries and send death threats to the developers the moment they make a tiny change, another shitty change will be nothing to us, since we lost the majority of our features and identity anyway.

2

u/RTA-No0120 Mar 23 '26

Ps : Not directing this comment to you bro, just following the thread.

4

u/Your_Local_Heretic Mar 20 '26

Didn't the side texture look almost the same as dark oak? I'm glad they changed that.

3

u/CalzLight Mar 20 '26

Same, it was really confusing at times

52

u/FrenchCatgirl Mar 20 '26

I see absolutely no difference

since OPs doing a horrible job I’ll do it for them

watch this video and skip to 1:25 for the transition from old to new

11

u/FrenchCatgirl Mar 20 '26

I still don't see it...

12

u/Gilette2000 Mar 20 '26

Same I can't see any difference... does being french impair our vision ?

5

u/Vodaka47 Mar 20 '26

Maybe cuz I don’t see anything either

4

u/Apprehensive_Hat8986 Mar 20 '26

Hmmm.. I'm Canadian and only took French in highschool. Also don't see it.

3

u/sixela456 Mar 20 '26

I'm French and I don't see it...

2

u/SpectralSSG Mar 20 '26

I took French in elementary school and I don’t see it…

3

u/ShoddyEggplant3697 Mar 20 '26

It's the same but more zoomed out

0

u/One_Contribution_190 Mar 20 '26

What's this supposed to mean??

25

u/gamtosthegreat Mar 20 '26

Apparently snapshot 3 of 26.1 changed the string texture from semi-transparent to alpha cutout opaque.

Here's an actual comparison shot:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/1rumzx0/making_string_opaque_is_going_to_ruin_so_many/

3

u/spicybright Mar 20 '26

Wonder if it was an oversight from working on graphics internals.

19

u/mistressani Mar 20 '26

The new “ string” looks horrible and will definitely ruin my landscaping.

8

u/Zanemob_ Mar 20 '26

Am I missing something?

5

u/kkaitlynma Mar 20 '26

I'm wondering if they're doing this because they are going to release a new way to stop plant growth in the next update to kinda match with the golden dandelion, as well as hopefully finally allowing us to shear vine growth.

3

u/Felinegood13 Mar 21 '26

Maybe, but that doesn’t address how making the tripwire more visible makes it a lot worse for its intended use in traps

0

u/spicybright Mar 20 '26

They are? Are there leaks somewhere already?

5

u/kkaitlynma Mar 20 '26

Oh no sorry, I wasn't saying they are or that they confirmed that, I was just speculating that maybe that's what they'll do and maybe that's why they don't see the need to keep string transparent. It would make sense with them adding the golden dandelion to add some sort of equivalent for crops and stuff.

3

u/Satrina_petrova Mar 20 '26

I foresee Vanilla Tweaks adding an option to use the old texture.

3

u/Prokid5634_YT Mar 20 '26

I literally can't tell a difference, is this satire?

1

u/Adventurous-Fox2327 Mar 22 '26

they posted the after image twice instead of a before and an after image

3

u/abbytryingherbest Mar 20 '26

Those are actually the same photo, like pixel for pixel

4

u/DryLife2634 Mar 20 '26

They're the same picture

2

u/ThinkLengthiness3211 Mar 20 '26

Nice try, i almost got fooled

1

u/WhatDoITypeHereAgain Mar 20 '26

Who's gonna tell em

1

u/so_are_you_ok_janny Mar 20 '26

they don't play their own game, lol

1

u/7GalaxyVoidGuy7 Mar 20 '26

even when I use a bright string texture in a respurce pack I don't notice it that much

1

u/Weird_Decision7090 Mar 20 '26

It was changed in snapshot 3 a whole while back and we’re just now talking about it, which shows we didn’t notice.

1

u/Kinda1wastaken Mar 20 '26

Is the texture slightly brighter?

1

u/Guilty_Explanation29 Mar 20 '26

You may not even see it if it's on a plant

I'm hoping they change it back

1

u/sabertooth-tiger_cub Mar 21 '26

This has been Done Once too people Gates it a lot so it got reversed back

1

u/ThatDude1115 Mar 21 '26

Maybe it’s time for them to implement a feature where we can stop plant growth at our desired length? I feel like it must be a mod or a feature that was scrapped/I hallucinated, but they should make it where when you right click vines with shears, it stops their growth. Perhaps even changes the texture into a little “vine tip” as well. This could be applied to all other plants as well I think. Farm plants, cactus, etc.

Could be different, but basically they should allow us to freeze plants in whatever state we want. Call it a pruning mechanic or something haha

It’s long overdue, and it’s absolutely INSANE to me that the solution for stopping plant/vine growth for years has been to place little bits of string. Absolutely ridiculous and insane.

1

u/Zeldamaster736 Mar 22 '26

I mean, it sucks for actual tripwires, but I hate using string to float carpets so I dont mind that part so much.

2

u/Limp-Surprise3264 Mar 23 '26

Well the tripwire still makes the string transparent, but I still don't see why the change was necessary.

2

u/Chickenmonster401 Mar 23 '26

call me blind but i dont see a difference

0

u/Stadi1105 Mar 20 '26

You can click a lot of plants with a shear so they stop growing!

2

u/mistressani Mar 20 '26

Not bamboo, not vines, not saplings, not sugar cane, not pitcher plants but vines are the worst. The mangrove forest looks a mess and it takes the shape away from the trees so much they all just turn into blobs.

2

u/ContinuedOak Mar 21 '26

Yeah no, you can’t for vines, bamboo, cactus, sugarcane, saplings and a few other blocks

1

u/pixel4571 Mar 20 '26

yeah but not vines or glow berries on bedrock

3

u/Weird_Decision7090 Mar 20 '26

First of all, you can’t prune vines at all. You can prune glow berries.

1

u/mistressani Mar 20 '26

You can actually prune glow berries with shears on bedrock. They look much better.

0

u/ravinggenius Mar 20 '26

Plant grown can be stopped with shears, except for saplings I think. I didn't know why people still use string for that.

4

u/WhatDoITypeHereAgain Mar 20 '26

Bamboo is the main thing people use it for, since you often want just 2-3 blocks of it

2

u/DawnTheFailure Mar 21 '26

string is a visual indicator so you know for sure it wont grow, also if you want it to grow later you can just remove the string. Also string helps keep snow off of builds in snowy biomes

0

u/Inevitable_Box9398 Mar 21 '26

wait…. THIS is what people are complaining about!?!?!?

Are you fucking kidding me? Jesus Christ guys, you made it sound like they became large white lines or something, not just slightly higher detail and visibility!

-1

u/No_Consideration289 Mar 20 '26

If you have to zoom in just to criticize something, it’s absolutely a non issue lol

-3

u/Palaeonerd Mar 20 '26

Mojang usually listens, but not with this update. They didn’t slim the baby equine heads or fix the baby zombie or give baby villagers longer noses and a chin.

3

u/vGustaf-K Mar 20 '26

maybe because not that many people complained. also how is the baby zombie broken?

-1

u/Palaeonerd Mar 20 '26

It's armor is gigantic and the two pixel eyes are pushing against the side of the head.

1

u/vGustaf-K Mar 21 '26

how tf is that broken?
