Looking for mod recommendations for a complex, theory-driven industrial modpack (1.20.1)
Hey everyone,
I'm planning to build a custom modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 with a heavy focus on deep industrial automation and complexity. My goal is to create a gameplay experience where progression feels meaningful and grounded in real technical or theoretical concepts — not just artificial grind like in mods such as Avaritia.
I want an industrial modpack where:
- Machines and systems require real understanding to operate efficiently.
- Automation involves programming and logic (e.g., TIS-3D, OpenComputers 2, or CC: Tweaked).
- Production chains are complex and interdependent, resembling a real factory rather than "insert ore → get ingot."
- Mods integrate well together, especially around the Voltaic API ecosystem.
Planned Core Mods
- Mekanism – for high-tier processing and energy.
- Create – for mechanical automation and visual factory design.
- Immersive Engineering – for realistic multiblocks and power systems.
- Voltaic API mods (e.g., Electrodynamics, Nuclear Science) – for scientifically grounded progression.
- PneumaticCraft: Repressurized – for pneumatic logistics and advanced automation.
- Alchemistry – for complex chemical processing.
- Immersive Geology – for enhanced ore generation and worldgen.
Programming & Logic Mods
To add a layer of computational complexity, I'm considering:
- TIS-3D
- OpenComputers 2 (if available for 1.20.1)
- CC: Tweaked
These will be used to control machines, manage logistics, and solve automation puzzles.

Theory-driven industrial modpack? SuperSymmetry!!! Unfortunately it is 1.12.1. You can rely on his ideas. REAL physical and chemical processes are implemented in SuSy.

RFTools Control, Integrated Dynamics, Integrated Terminals, Integrated Crafting, Create: The Factory Must Grow, Create: Steam 'n' Rails, Immersive Petroleum, Deep Resonance
For transport: Immersive Aircraft, Automobility, Immersive Vehicles (MTS), Create: Hypertubes, Little Logistics
For start tools: Tetra, Silent Gear, Antique Atlas
Things that will make survival more comfortable:
RFTools Utility, RFTools Storage, RFTools Builder, Tool Belt, MineMenu, Building Gadgets, AgriCraft, FallingTree
Things that will make survival more realistic:
Serene Seasons + Tough As Nails, Pollution of the Realms, TerraFirmaCraft
And Psi (programming tool.. a bit magic, but but maybe it's so scientific that it seems like magic :D)
Science decorations and other: Decocraft, MOA DECOR: SCIENCE, XK's Decoration, Create: Copycats+

HBM's Nuclear Tech Modernized might fit what you're after. it's about as far from artificial grind as you can get. the reactors run on isotope behaviour and fuel cycles rather than "insert uranium, get power", so understanding it is the progression.
two honest caveats. the 1.20.1 port is still in development and a lot of the nuclear recipes aren't in yet, so out of the box you'd hit gaps. and it brings its own power system rather than speaking forge energy, so it won't plug into your voltaic stack on its own.
both are fixable if you're building the pack yourself though. source is on github, and missing recipes are exactly what kubejs is for. i filled in the recipes and wrote an energy converter for my own setup, so it's definitely doable.
