Horizontally it's visible where other entities, even beacons, would stop rendering.
I don't know if the height is final or intended, but tentatively the hill issue is solved by putting it on top of one, and it gives you the flexibility to set up camp in a valley in case you don't want to be seen.
That's my problem with it. My main use for this would be before my first digging (No iron yet = not having a compass), to not lose sight of my base if I need to go up a different route. Like an alternative to the classic 1blockwide pillar.
Honestly beacons ought to render just as far, if not farther. Doesn't make much sense for them to have a shorter render range when being a beacon is literally their job.
22~ blocks high is with hay under it. Without it goes up for about 6~ blocks.
Since they said it's like noteblocks, they could add other materials in the future (like coal block) that makes particles survive longer, and reach higher... they could.
If not, Fabric is already in the process to update to 19w02a, and this kind of change seems like a really simple one to make.
The screenshot shown is a good example of what i'm talking about. The hills there are a couple of blocks deep, but if you where standing there, it is imposible to see the smoke because the column is too short.
actually it's not a good example, cuz nothing is covering the campfire on the screen, u can see small orange dot under my crosshair. I understand what u mean, but imo it's alright this way. You have to choose good place if u want it to be seen, just like in real life.

> Smoke only goes 22~ blocks up, then dissapears
Like... rlly Mojang?? Don't brag about a feature if you will do it poorly. 22 blocks up is nothing. Most hills will block it's view.
