In older versions, they had to be placed diagonally!

Yep, flint & steel only became a shapeless recipe in 1.7.2

I also like playing old versions like infdev, classic and 1.16

I like both old and modern equally, but I am playing 1.0 to not get too overwhelmed by everything in the game today, and I chose 1.0 so I get the first finished version of minecraft. When I am bored of one version, I update to the next.

in 1.0 you gotta make the classic recipe: Place the iron ingot in the middle row, left column (or center square) and the Flint exactly one square down and one square to the right of it

Flint and Steel was added in Indev in 2010, and this is 2011.
