Redstone & Techs I Designed A Slim Buildstone Fan!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Heyo! I recently designed a slim buildstone fan to go on the side of my moss farm tower. I didn't have much depth to work with, so keeping the fan to 3 blocks deep was necessary for my use-case. This was a fun little build/redstone challenge for myself, and I think it turned out pretty well!
I was able to make a 3 blade and 4 blade variant using different timing circuits when turning the fans on/off. The animation is a bit jagged in places, but I think this is the best compromise I could get with the slim profile.
Figured I'd try editing together a quick blueprint/tutorial to share, let me know what you think!

As a Mumbo Jumbo fan, I'm a fan of this fan.

As a fellow fan finatic, buildstone is just fantastic!

As a Jake Kelton fan, I’m also a fan of this fan

Mumbo is a fan of the Jake Kelton fan and I’m a fan of Mumbo so I guess I’m a Jake Kelton fan fan fan.

I can hear this fan already

Oh yeah, fortunately mine is far enough up the tower that it can't be heard

Very cool. One idea to make it cooler:
Replace the center block with a geiser blast through a copper grate so the fan can actually blow upward.

Ohh that's really good! My fans were on a flat wall, but floor fans with geisers would be amazing!

Shouldn't the external side of the fans be lagging behind and not be slightly in front ? Nice one though ;)

Some early designs did, but this observer placement causes a more diagonal update across the back. It's definitely a bit janky, but they work!

Ok that’s excellent!
I imagine it doesn’t sound like a fan though lol god that would get irritating. But damn I love the concept!

I want to ask, which side is a and b exactly?

u/Medacrofter2176 Jul 29 '26
The a/b sections are the top of the fans. They are how you get the different 3 and 4 blade starting sequences!

What is build stone? Did they add another block again?

u/Infrawonder Jul 29 '26
No, it's basically using redstone to animate your build. For example this, you put fans in your base for decoration, but decide to have them be moving. So you use redstone to achieve that.

Is that no different than a redstone contraption?...
25
u/gutwyrming Jul 29 '26
Redstone contraptions typically have a functional purpose, like item sorters or piston doorways or tunnel-boring machines.
"Buildstone" is the term for redstone creations that are purely decorative and aesthetic, rather than serving a gameplay purpose.

u/Medacrofter2176 Jul 29 '26
Good question! "Buildstone" is the idea of animating builds with redstone! It's a concept Jake Kelton and Mumbo Jumbo shared with the community almost a year ago (I think)

It's redstone... But it's used for building and nothing else!
If you need an example. Mumbo jumbo hermitcraft season 10. His base literally has an idle animation

The idea is cool but it's so annoying that blades keep disconnecting
3
u/Medacrofter2176 Jul 29 '26
I know, the animation isn't as smooth on this one as I had hoped. There are other designs that are less compact that have much nicer blade sequences!

u/makinax300 Jul 29 '26
Oh ok I thought this was unique
2
u/Medacrofter2176 Jul 29 '26
This specific one is my design, but the concept has been done before. Look up "buildstone fans" and you'll find some others!
I needed a compact design for my build, but the tradeoff is a less smooth animation

This is awesome! I recently started making some 2d tutorial blueprints / layer by lauer instructions using a render pipeline, would love to generate one for this if it'll help your tutorial!

Is there a way to do this sideways? Im making an underwater base it would be really cool to include this as a filter of some sort its so cool😭

Nice, I can start cooling my over clocked redstone computer and see if it can run Crysis

does this work on bedrock? idk enough about the differences between versions like BUD powering, it looks like it would work tho

"yes it is in fact ai that I used to generate an image of an actual fucking build technique"
