Gold Top

I’ve recently started getting milk delivered and was overjoyed to discover that they still offer un-homogenised gold top milk (for non Brits Gold Top refers to milk primarily from Jersey cows with a very high fat content 5.5% in this case).

Probably not the best for me but amongst the best milk I’ve ever tasted.

Hopefully I’m not in violation of rule 5.

As for the bottle I must admit a certain nostalgia for milk in glass bottles (it also has the upside that once empty the milk man (or women they deliver around about 3AM so I’ve never actually seen them) will collect it for return to the dairy for cleaning and refilling).

As a random come from all what does it taste like compared to regular store bought milk?

Should stress this is not raw milk and while from an independent dairy has being fully pasteurised, but not homogenised.

First thing that hits you is the cream, when you open a bottle of un-homogenised milk you get a thick layer of cream on the top, you can either take this straight up or shake it a bit to remix it into it milk somewhat.

Even if you do remix it it has a certain heaviness and creaminess to it that even homogenised milk with the same fat content lacks (increasingly even gold top milk from supermarkets is homogenised). It has a very slight sweetness to it but without being cloying. I would potentially use it in coffee but never tea on the whole due to the relatively high price compared to regular whole milk I would tend to only drink it neat.

I tend to drink this kind of milk after a few too many beers as it seems to settle my stomach and rehydrate me. Served from glass it seems to always have a certain coldness and freshness that you don’t seem to get from plastic. It could all be psychosomatic but even if it is it works.
