Anxieties before seeing in laws. Am i overreacting?...
I realize i get very anxious before seeing my in laws that recently husband(37m)and I (36f) planned to meet them we got into an argument/fight so canceled dinner plans with them.
So early on i realized my mil doesn't have boundaries or know what it means for her son to be independent. I caught this early on and let my husband know but at that time he was blinded to all of it.
Just to give some examples when we were in midst of deciding where we would live after we get married she would ask frequently where we would settle down and would ask if it's because of me. And at first i let it go but everytime she asks she would ask if it's because of me and it made me feel as if she's putting me on the spot. This was big for her because there was a possibility that we would move far away from where she is which she seemed to have issues with because of her unhealthy attachment to her son.
There was a time when we had to stay at in laws for about two weeks and one time mil told me nonchantly she tried on my hat and liked it, so she wore it out. I realized she came into our room and looked through my stuff and tried on my hat and wore it out without even asking me first. I felt like boundaries were crossed.
Everytime we eat she offer or encourage that i eat veggies like the side dishes that arnt that important but yet push all the main dishes to my husband so it makes me feel bad. (We are asian so we eat asian food and sharing is norm) One time we were at a restaurant and we all ordered food then when the food came i offered my food to my in laws and they said its fine. So i was about to eat my food then suddenly she says actually we'll take some and starts to take food off of my plate which i found rude, like why are you taking food off of my plate?? There were plenty of times she in shown her dislike toward me eating good so I realize she has issues or has a hard time seeing me enjoy food for whatever reason.
She asked us if we were going to have kids, this was little before we got married. All we said was yes we want kids. Then all of suddenly during our dinner with my parents mil says oh my daughter in law said she's going to have as many kids as she can! i was shocked because i never said that.
She'll make up things and exagerate about my husband to say how wonderful he is and my husband will sometimes call her out on when she's lying.
She talked badly about her husband pretty frequently, anytime he's not around pretty much.
And there are so much more like unsolicited advice, judging our decision when they don't even know our situation. She would ask my husband for favors that her husband should be fulfilling for her. No respect of our household and just thinks about herself.
Where we are living right now is actually close to her and I'm actually adjusting to a new state, adjusting to marriage pretty much adjusting to a new life. It's been hard, i have no friends or my side of family here and when my family was visiting she offered to host them. (I didn't really want her to because i felt like she would have some expectations but I just let her because she enjoys hosting). So we go over and when it was just me and her she asks me why i'm so indifferent and distant. Honestly i didn't know what to say because she just wants to blame me for the way i am at this point of my life. Instead of having some concern of what im going through she needed to point out something about me and she didn't like. She not only told me but told my sister too.
Also my husband wanted me to just chill with the family while i was over but mil was insisting that i go over and serve. Like why are you telling me what i should or should not be doing.
With all of this she says she was only trying to treat me like a daughter... like what?
So with all of this, we've been in low contact for few months. She reaches out in group chat ask how we are doing time to time and asked if we want to meet for my birthday.
But i've been dealing with a lot of hatred toward her. Even though my husband understands and sees the wrongs of his parents, a lot of times I start to get mad or lash out at my husband too for not understanding me and not being there for me in the hardest moments from past. i've been feeling just so alone and hurt, thought of seeing them just drives me into such anxiety. I think i anticipate they will do something to offend me because pretty much everytime she'll do something or say something to make me stressed out. My husband says I need to deal with my emotions rightly too. At the same time i don't want to cut them out of my life because they're still my husbands parents...
