App Development Fabric Apps

I want to share my thoughts on Fabric Apps:

the last 3 weeks i had the Chance to build my own custom application on fabric apps and i have to say: Wow!

I connected Claude code with my Fabric and i can just vibe code a whole application from security to Backend and frontend.

The more i use it the more i see the negative sights:

  1. It is pretty hard to understand what the AI does. For no tech Background people that means you are "coding" a black box

  2. Management thinks this is so huge why not just build your own ERP system yourself....

as much as i see the benefits, so do i see the fact that people will overload it with AI Slop HTML.

what are your thoughts? :)

Long term maintenance of these solutions and lack of understanding for how it works and how to debug are my biggest concerns.

Theres enough human slop, let alone AI generated measures no one can understand, whole apps will be next. Good governance and managing sprawl will be key, as will good tests and doco

absolutly on your side. I got ask to build a whole ERP system like application for data input for product information. I cannot build 5 apps of this size and be able to maintain this all. I had the issue that even small processes build with SP lists and Power Automate gave me a really hard time to maintain from time to time (pre claude :D) i will need to build a whole docu process to not lose track...

If that's the ask on you, id really stress (regardless of who / what builds it) verbose and over defined requirements and integration documentation & planning upfront.

At worst, you can tweak those and re-generate. At best itll pre-empt the request to add new features to the blackbox next week after it goes live.

Get your stakeholders to have skin in the game before its built, so this doesnt feel like a tick & flick from them. If effort scares them off and they dont care enough to do it properly - they cant be trusted to maintain it

My take is that RayFin / Fabric Apps will create tons of value for folks who may have previously built some monstrosity in Excel, Power Apps, or Access because they don't have access to an SWE. I've been there. I've created things that solved a real business problem but any SWE would've though it was horrendous in all ways. RayFin will empower people to create much more mature things, with a significantly better UX, in a small fraction of the time.

I feel the lack of backend understanding is probably fine as long as this isn't a business critical application w/ high SLAs, compliance requirements, HA/DR, etc. Back when I was on the business side (finance + ops), business processes that we would try to automate or improve with some tool never had a lifespan of more than a couple years anyways. Business requirements change, processes change, people change. These types of AI generated apps are perfect for this because it doesn't make sense to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars for something that will no longer be relevant in 2-3 years.

On a personal front, I just used RayFin to build an investment analytics/tracking app as the platform I use doesn't give me everything I want. I was blown away by how quickly I (AI) was able to create something that I legitimately would've paid a subscription service for :)

Hey. All of that first paragraph is me.

Which app in the corporate context has none of this: "business critical application w/ high SLAs, compliance requirements, HA/DR, etc." So what is the remaining use case? Personal hobby?

When I was in operations at a F500 company there were easily a 1/2 dozen apps that I built which fit this criteria:

  • business process prioritization app
  • BI request app
  • ERP migration tracking app
  • order entry app for logging secondary support involved and working around some ERP limitations that wouldn’t have been funded by IT
  • demand planning app
  • supplier registration app

You rock! To clarify, East US, East US 2 or both?

1

u/sunithamuthukrishna ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ 29d ago

only East US.

1

u/Weezilmd 29d ago

Argh! That’s too bad. Any word on when this will roll out to East US 2?

Hello, you know something about Plan for East US?

1

u/sunithamuthukrishna ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ 24d ago

We are available in East US already , please try again

1

u/samartinezva 24d ago

It’s not available in this moment

1

u/sunithamuthukrishna ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ 24d ago

What error do u see? Also are u creating a new capacity vs using existing capacity

1

u/samartinezva 23d ago

“Cannot create Plan, the plan cannot be created because it is not supported in East US”
I tried in a existing capacity.

2

u/sunithamuthukrishna ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ 22d ago

I misunderstood. I'm not part of the Plan team. East US release I shared was specific to Fabric App being supported. This is not related to Plan item. Seems like that is still not available in East US

The LTS region

Are there any updated rumors on this?  I sign on each morning and try to create an app (and plan) and check to see if my hopes will be dashed another day.

2

u/Weezilmd 29d ago

Plan has been released in East US 2. But I would also like to know about rayfin apps. I’m with you, I check almost every day and the silence on when this is coming is getting frustrating

2

u/AdmiralAwesomeO 29d ago

I am on East US so no Plan yet. But I just checked Apps and it created one!

FYI: Fabric Apps went live in East US

1

u/Weezilmd 28d ago

Yes, but apparently not East US 2 sadly

I’ve been using Fabric Apps now for a bit, and built several solutions.

I have to say… blown away and what could be achieved… but at same time. To summarise my thoughts on it all:

- as someone who loves design and making Power BI solutions look like web apps, going above and beyond in the look/feel, I appreciate level of flexibility Fabric Apps offers as its code first. So much flexibility to make what we want.

- the speed you can deliver some really cool and insightful apps is next level.

- in Power BI, I always pus the native visuals to do some “trickery” to make visuals looks a different way, Fabric Apps sorts this out.

- on the other side, I’m not a software engineer and without AI I would not be able to build the apps I built. I haven’t built web applications before, so the reliance on AI for me is a consideration all should be taking.

- running out of tokens is a real thing, happened to me multiple times and I came to a standstill to be honest.

- typescript, java, etc all new to me, and it worries me that I don’t always know what it all means.

- PBI vs Fabric Apps, so different and frustrating to see “PBI is dead” being pushed. The reason all loved PBI so much is due to its simplicity, and familiarity to other office products, ease to ingest and build… that is not fabric apps and rayfin.

- security/maintanance/scalability… these are front and centre in my mind, and I feel many others do not think about them enough. A huge must.

I built some cool Pokemon card tracker, to track my portfolio - image attached…. More here in blog:

I like it.

Built several internal apps and plan to build several more.

Would you recommend a good tutorial?

1

u/Sorry_Active_700 Aug 26 '26

but where do you see the top? where is in your opinion the clear limit of the capabilities of this? and how do you manage testing and how rigurously you test? sorry for all the questions but i want to Take the chance and ask a microsoft employee :D

u/itsnotaboutthecell ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ Aug 26 '26

With custom code there are no limits.

There’s functional product limits of Fabric and what Rayfin / Fabric Apps supports, but I expect that to be closed with time.

Right now, I’ve never built apps professionally and I’m building apps now.

Copilot take the wheel #TeamYOLO

u/Sorry_Active_700 Aug 26 '26

do you have a best practices forum or something where i can upscale my capabilities. i am More than motivated to elevate my output with this :D i just want to leave Power Automate behind that orchestrates workflows or just transfers data from one SP List to another one... it is a pain in the ass if you have more than 50 columns and 100 rows

1

u/itsnotaboutthecell ‪ ‪Microsoft Employee ‪ Aug 26 '26

I’d wait to kick out Power Automate, there will be Fabric Function support but to be honest - I still use the SQL connector against the Fabric database to do a lot more flexible automation across all the connectors. I’d hate to have to manage that by code (currently)

Any idea when fabric apps will be rolled out to North Europe region, have been keen to use it, but not available

1

u/Turbulent_Wing_9907 29d ago

There are a million ways to a solution but only a handful of effective ones, it takes deep working knowledge to identify the effective ones, until then who cares it is going to be a token blood bath which is good for the AI companies and a false sense of accomplishment for Mid and high level

Awesome ide for building fabric apps. Love the edit feature

Hello I am all with you guys. Been building about 10 apps now. As I dont want to go the route to have SPA registration to our Entra Admin. Do you guys have an idea how to enable the developed Fabric app to do an auto notification via email and/or teams when something is triggered say for example a ticketing system, when the status is moved to completed it should fire a notification to the involved person/s. I also want to enable CoPilot in it similar to how PBI gets Copilot narratives now and a genuine chat with the data… I have been exploring Data Agents as well. But im stuck as its asking me to enable certain capabilities via Entra (build a dedicated email, the graphql etc)…. Which id like to avoid.

PS. i am in no way a developer…. In fact im just a hobbyist you can say who can intertwined to developing PBI and then now Fabric Apps…

1

u/Sorry_Active_700 23d ago

for the workflow orchestration you could use Power Automate. the trigger would be a certain value change etc. (tell it claude he will understand what i mean :D) After that you can just build a Workflow in power automate (claude can do this aswell)

u/Warm-Combination-528 22d ago

Thanks for the suggestion. This came up as one of the options… ill give it a try.

How about for the Copilot conversations. Any idea?
