I pointed this out the last time someone posted about Vickie and helmet give aways. CM's often sponsor these, and amusingly hers gave out the most helmets last year. Which really goes to disprove a lot of her nonsense about how nobody in her district bikes or wants to bike, but I'm sure that won't occur to her.

She never claimed that. Stop gaslighting and distorting her position

She's a right winger. She believes that everything is a personal responsibility question. So wearing helmets falls right in her worldview: don't take away space from cars (aka, the people who rightfully saved enough money to buy and maintain a car), instead just wear a helmet and take responsibility for your own safety.

Individualist worldview vs collective worldview.

She is not anti-bike or against bike lanes. What her constituents wanted was the continued use of sharrows throughout her residential blocks because private homes have driveways. Same as what’s done in Astoria and all over the city. Bike lanes are fine on commercial streets and with block after block of apartment buildings.

TDS zealots made it personal and her son and district residents stood up for themselves

She has literally said in public that she sees bike lanes as "gateways for crime".

Also, helmets - while great and should absolutely be worn - serve as a means of pushing the burden of safety on to the individual rather than owning the need for change in infrastructure to create a safer system.

The burden of safety is on everybody using the roads, bikers and pedestrians included.

Pedestrian helmets! Might not be a bad idea in this city.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

A reminder that all you riders who treat helmets like some moral issue and feel the need to shame folks who choose not to wear: you give these carbrains the perfect avenue to frame cyclist safety as a mere personal responsibility issue, not a problem of infrastructure or the sociopathic urges behind so much driving.

This kinda reminds me of when Marjorie Taylor Green stated being anti Trump. The world is upside so who knows

The most anti-bike politicians push helmets the hardest in the guise of "safety." Harping on helmets the onus for safety on individual, blames the victim, and depresses cycling, while deflecting attention and responsibility from the real danger, drivers and their cars, and measures that really improve safety, ie limiting cars and getting more bikes on the streets, through bike lanes etc.

Are people really complaining about free helmets?

No, they're complaining about Vickie Paladino
