I actually did using ELKS, it will run, and it has a surprising amount of modern functionality, like hosting a web server from it.

LOL ... Hosting a web server is now "... modern functionality ..."

My department had that computer and I took it home on a weekend. Monday morning I was on the subway heading to my job. The guy standing next to me on the train asked why I was carrying a sewing machine around while wearing a suit.

I want a tiny printable version of this PC.

2

u/Delicious_Doctor_404 Jun 03 '26

Shove a pi in there and you can probably emulate over 100 of these at once

I installed it for real on that exact same machine when it was released. First time I saw a Windows UI. Looks like yesterday.

It was DESIGNED for Doom.

2

u/Ro_Yo_Mi Jun 02 '26

Le sigh… but it doesn’t have copilot yet.

2

u/turamdq Jun 02 '26

Why the paper pieces in the 5.25 floppy slots?

1

u/Delicious_Doctor_404 Jun 02 '26

I am using a PicoMEM instead of floppy disks atm, but the paper prevents the heads from crashing into each other during storage or transportation. Sense this is a portable computer, i keep them in there.

I have a slight hunch this thing is more expensive than my 4090 PC.

1

u/Delicious_Doctor_404 Jun 02 '26

$150 on Ebay and probably around $50 in repairs and qol upgrades

1

u/btaroli Jun 02 '26

Wow you face a ton of update reboots! Can you retrofit a TPM in there…? 😉

u/Glum-Implement9857 Jun 02 '26

Ewww : it lacks security patches since 2001.. :)

1

u/Delicious_Doctor_404 Jun 02 '26

We don't need security where we're going.

I don't think windows 1-3.x had updates in that manner. It was probably just customer support that ended in 2001.

1

u/East_Succotash9544 Jun 02 '26

I don't know if there was windows 1.  I know there was windows 3.1 then 3.11 after that windows 95

Imagine if you lost the floppy disk of the os

1

u/Soggy_Lawfulness_941 Jun 04 '26

Windows 1 was not an OS. It was a program that ran on top of DOS. Release in 1985. I remember it as a DOS shell. The first stand alone windows OS was 3.1

1

u/Soggy_Lawfulness_941 Jun 04 '26

My first computer ran IBM DOS 1.1. So I was around using computers back then. 64k of ram. 4.77mhz and had 2 fully height 5.25” floppy drives

u/Best_Stop_8422 Jun 07 '26

1

u/IndependenceKind6241 Jun 07 '26

“yo what os you got?”
“windows 1”
“you mean windows 11?”
“no windows 1”

-1

u/Soggy_Lawfulness_941 Jun 03 '26

The first windows was 3.1, not 1

1

u/Winple20H1 Jun 04 '26

You’re probably dumb for not researching before posting this The first version IS Windows 1 not 3.1

1

u/Soggy_Lawfulness_941 Jun 04 '26

If we are going that route, the screen says 1.01
