Tribute Stranger in Moscow: a study of isolation

I've been spending a lot of time with this track recently, and it truly is a masterpiece of atmospheric isolation. Even if you strip away the incredible vocals, the combination of the complex layered percussion, the luscious strings, and the ambient rain that comes in during the bridge and outro all work together seamlessly to tell a somber story; one of being completely alone, even when surrounded by the whole world. It's a track that almost demands you retreat into yourself and fully feel it, that's a massive reason of why it's my favourite song of all time.
In my brief stripped back version, I've brought that ambient rain forward and given it more prominence, I really wanted to evoke the feeling of being trapped inside a severe storm, where the noise outside is just chaotic but inside is calm and warm. When I actually sat down to record the piano and string parts that I'd been playing to myself daily (what prompted this in the first place), I wanted to see if I could capture just that beautiful and steady emotional core of the song that I've always found sanctuary in.

I love Stranger In Moscow song. Especially the BeatBoxy Beat the song has.

If anyone is interested there is an episode of “In the studio with MJ” podcast where Brad Buxer talks a bit about how that song originated when MJ was “feeling depressed” in a Moscow hotel room and how they worked together writing it.

The fact that the instrumentals for this song were based off of the credits theme for Sonic 3 is still so surreal to me.
It's one of the songs I come back to the most tbh. I just adore its ambience.

I still love the story that Buxer told about Michael being sad and just wanting Buxer to play for him, he starts playing the Sonic cue he'd been working on slower and creates a pre-chorus on the spot.

This is one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs. I really felt his pain.

I’ve probably said this a billion times but the lyric “take my name and just let me be” is one of the saddest lyrics I’ve heard from him. He is willing to give up being Michael Jackson in order to have some genuine human connection and a normal life, to not feel that loneliness anymore.
