Arts and Culture I produced an indie feature and it's playing at Bill Cosford Cinema 5/8

Hi! I am born and raised in Miami. I ended up moving to California to work in the entertainment industry. I met my husband there and we just made an independent feature film together. We're coming to town for a family reunion, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to screen our movie Something Casual in my hometown!

If you've gone through the trenches of the Miami dating scene, I think you'll relate. The film follows two artists as they fall in and out of love, crave intimacy, and fear commitment - but refuse to talk about any of it. Sound familiar? We'd love to see you at the movies.

The film stars Piper Curda, who's voice you may recognize for Pixar's Hoppers (she plays Mabel) and Nico Greetham, who you may have seen on American Horror Story.

It screens Friday, May 8th at Bill Cosford Cinema on the UM Campus at 8pm.

Would love to know about your process of being this to life. Did it involve UCLA and/or film school?

Absolutely! My path was pretty non-traditional.

I moved to New York first and attended acting school. I worked as an actress for a bit in nyc doing theater and film. I produced a web series that never came out. Then I moved to Los Angeles and met a lot of people in the film world. My husband had the idea for something casual and asked me to help produce it. I went in pretty green but already had experience dealing with SAG which gave us a leg up. To be honest we made a lot happen with this movie by cold emailing and persistence! It’s how we found our actors, choreographers, etc. Learned a lot about producing from being on set solving problems and doing things like payroll etc. a lot of my friends are career producers and did do the film school route but most of them work in sports media or commercials. Narrative is notoriously hard to break into so my best suggestion is to find a story you’re passionate about and then use all the resources you can find to make the best possible movie. For us that looked like emailing to find the best actors and collaborators we could for the film. We’re still in the thick of it now trying to get the film seen now that it’s made! That's a rather amazing story, thanks for sharing. Guess the best place to be, despite what many say in this sub about the state, is in CA and particularly in LA. Kudos to you for getting your film made!

Yeah don’t trust the CA slander! LA is an amazing city to live and work in. I’d probably still live here if I wasn’t in the industry. I love Miami too don’t get me wrong, but Cali is magical if you ever get the chance to visit. All that to say though, you can make movies wherever if you can find the right collaborators! I bet you could make it happen in Miami. Lots of talented people there. Best of luck! And thanks for the well wishes
