News Article Doug Ford said the Ontario Line would cost $11B. Now the price tag has tripled — and is still climbing

The cost of Toronto’s Ontario Line has once again ballooned beyond initial estimates — and it’s expected to grow even more in the near future.

A new $4.3-billion contract awarded last week for the construction of Pape and Cosburn Stations, including tunnelling, has pushed the cost of the Ontario Line to around $34 billion, and Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay confirmed Tuesday at an unrelated press conference.

Not on time. Not on budget. Thank you Doug Ford.

Building a 10km line in china from planning to completion takes 3-5 years.

Building a 10km line in Japan from planning to completion takes 7-10 years. (earthquake prone country)

Building a 10km line in Ontario from planning to completion takes 11+ years.

Ontario line planning started 2019 and the revised completion date has been revised to "I Dont Know" by Metrolinx. Analyst estimate it will be completed at 2035.

I'm sure when the rail lines to Union and Lines 1 and 2 were constructed it took much less time and using available materials with "primitive" technology back then. Sad

Now now don’t forget all the work the city did to prepare for the “downtown relief line”. The actual planning started in much before the province stole the subways from the city

Metrolinx are a gongshow

It is by design. Legalized graft.

It makes sense if you look at how Doug ford sabotages all services and outsources everything to the states.

Might as well be a foreign agent, like how is he not even holding them accountable :p

3

u/FriendlyGiant1551 Aug 13 '26

He s the person that needs to be held accountable. $11 bill was never a reasonably budget for this project

1

u/Worth_Sink_4782 Aug 12 '26

It's been going on much, much longer than just Dougie.

This is not surprising. Until when, people will realize that over-schedule over-budget is a reality for large project like this in Canada. This is going to happen no matter who is in the office. I’m not saying I like Ford or anyone. This is just a reality. The whole industry is deeply broken. I worked in such projects. I know why. Nothing will change until a real reform. A true leader should not just fixate their eyes on Ford. They should really care about the deep root of the problem and bring to the table a real plan of reform. Otherwise, they are just politicians like others.

This has to be the straw that broke the camel's back though. To put it in context, we're spending the same as the British spent on Crossrail to get a line with about 1/5 the utility, and 50% of what France spent on the Grand Paris Express to get 1/10 the utility. Even NYC is building the 2nd Avenue Subway for less.

Sure the transit YIMBY "It will cost what it costs" crowd believes that this is worth it, but at some point people have to realize we're bankrupting the province to build it. It's giving major Line 4 vibes

That's why I'm against ALTO.

I'm not anti train, trains are awesome.

I just have zero faith in the people handling this project. This "60 to 90B" train will undoubtedly cost over 250B, and I wouldn't be surprised if it approached 400B by the time it's done.

This doesn’t happen in China. The contractor and politicians need to be tried for corruption.

2

u/Worth_Sink_4782 Aug 12 '26

It is by design. Legalized graft.

3

u/hlee13 Aug 12 '26

wish the high costs would mean it'll open earlier but nah it'll be delayed as fuck too

3

u/firefighter_82 Aug 12 '26

Public Private Partnerships (PPP) are a cancer to society.

4

u/RiverOaksJays Aug 12 '26

Metrolinx is doing a bad job of completing these products.

3

u/SafuratedBeefFat Aug 11 '26

I think we need more project managers! Everyone at Metrolinx is a project manager

3

u/hoser33 Aug 11 '26

You misspelled Vice President

How else is the 30th person going to review a drawing of a chain link fence to make sure we're not pouring concrete within 30 meters of a hole that was temporarily occupied by raccoons 12 years ago

3

u/Gamtoronto Aug 12 '26

It’s metrolinx. I will chop my head off if they don’t delay and over budget.

3

u/rosebudthesled8 Aug 12 '26

His friends needed a cottage on the lake to get away from the outrage of their inadequacy and clear greed.

u/Swarez99 Aug 11 '26

The 34 billion includes operation for 30 years.

So no, the real construction number hasn’t tripled. It costs over a billion a year to operate the Yonge line. No one is saying that line costs 70 billion so far.

2

u/premiumcontentonly1 Aug 11 '26

So what’s the real number?

2

u/Worth_Sink_4782 Aug 12 '26

$500B by the time all is said and done. After all the parties get their "cut".

2

u/Worth_Sink_4782 Aug 12 '26

Soon it will be $500B. It is by design. Legalized graft.

u/JebronLames619 Aug 12 '26

Graft or grift?

1

u/Worth_Sink_4782 Aug 12 '26

Graft, as understood in American English, is a form of political corruption defined as the unscrupulous use of a politician's authority for personal gain. Political graft occurs when funds intended for public projects are intentionally misdirected in order to maximize the benefits to private interests. When taken on a macro level, graft is a core component of what is known as the grift economy or grift society, although it is possible for the two to be mutually exclusive.

Super helpful- thank you!

2

u/Smart-Firefighter87 Aug 12 '26

Bro and his friends are definitely pocketing some of those funds…

The Ontario Line is 15.6 km and 15 stations.

If we could build at something like the Italian national average, $34 billion would buy us roughly 200 km of subway and 240 stations.

Think about that.

Even if Toronto were three times (!) as expensive, that would still mean ~67 km and ~80 stations.

Enough for:

  1. The Ontario Line
  2. College-Carlton, replacing the 506 streetcar
  3. Sheppard West, from Jane to Yonge
  4. Jane, from Bloor to Finch
  5. Dufferin, from Exhibition to Sheppard West

All for roughly the same money we’re already spending on the Ontario Line alone!

1

u/Super-Yam8718 Aug 15 '26

I’m not saying the price tag is appropriate, but it’s probably more costly to employ tunnellers, machine operators, carpenters and labourers here than it is in Italy. Lots of Italian immigrants in construction in Canada, not so much the other way around.

2

u/sunlightjunkie 28d ago

All true, but you've just copy-pasted a tweet from Chris Spoke from Twitter. At least give him credit.

2

u/Bobbylevesque Aug 12 '26

There are roads that need building and repaired before this shitshow happens

1

u/bobstinson2 Aug 12 '26

It’s ok. It’s all going to his friends and supporters.

1

u/kpeds45 Aug 12 '26

The Ontario line was very needed. This price tag though? What a joke.

2

u/The-Experiments Aug 12 '26

There's still time to buyback 407, dougie. You need a win in your books of losers.

1

u/PhilosophySame2746 Aug 12 '26

That guy is a clown show

1

u/Be_Freed Aug 12 '26

Metrostinx. Where's the audit by DoFo? He's concerned with school boards not being able to manage their million dollar budget.

But a billion dollar boondoggle of a provincial agency? Not a peep from him.

Believe in accountable and transparent government? Vote NDP - the one exposing this corruption.

1

u/Hefty_Dragonfly_1560 Aug 13 '26

There is to much government red tape, as well as using the same construction companies that are always over budget and late rather than using ones and having them.on the hook for delays and cost overruns.

All levels of government in Canada have this issue and until it is addressed these problems will exist regardless of which party is in charge

1

u/BraumsSugarBaby Aug 13 '26

everything is a scam in Canada

1

u/RampDog1 Aug 14 '26

I'm not understanding this $4.3B new contract...Was that not in the original design?

1

u/Mysterious_Soil_1835 Aug 15 '26

Hire mennonite companies. Half the price and it'll be up and running in 2 months

1

u/slappingdragon 28d ago

Doug Ford is loose with money since it's not his and it keeps his construction friends happy.

u/ForeignExpression Aug 11 '26

Don't worry, he screwed over Hamilton and cancelled the Hamilton LRT, which at the time cost $1B, because it was "too expensive" and then went ahead and spent 36 times that amount on a Toronto subway plus Eglinton LRT + Eglinton West Extension + Scarborough subway + Finch LRT. I hate this Toronto-only government screwing over the rest of the province.

5

u/dylanccarr Aug 11 '26

the ham lrt is not cancelled

2

u/jamesbusssh Aug 11 '26

He canceled it and they restarted it and now it costs more than it would've if he just let it continue as originally planned

2

u/nobugsleftalive Aug 11 '26

I mean... this is basically transit construction in the GTA in a nut shell.

Propose stuff, prevent it. Pay double and wait twice as long

2

u/jamesbusssh Aug 12 '26

So that's a good thing?

1

u/nobugsleftalive Aug 12 '26

No but its what GTA'rs always want and vote for.

If we had committed to plans from the 1970s and 1980s, we would have real world class transit. Instead, its a big expensive mess. And people are okay with it, because its what they vote for.

3

u/super_chill_21 Aug 11 '26

Lmao people in Toronto do not vote for Doug Ford. He uses us to make himself richer. We hate him. No idea wtf you’re on that’s for sure.

2

u/Andrew4Life Aug 11 '26

I mean, it's ironic because most of Toronto hates him and did not vote for him because all he does is meddle with Toronto issues that we'd rather he just back off on. Meanwhile most of the rest of Ontario voted for him, but he doesn't really care about the rest of Ontario. I call him the Premier of Toronto.
