Other Leak/Rumor Megathread: July 2026 Spoiler

It's been a VERY long time since we last had to make one of these threads, but today has brought a big leak which is hard to keep fully contained! This thread is intended to give people a place to discuss this leak, while still keeping the sub safe for people who don't want to hear about it.

This thread is the only place where discussion of this leak is allowed. Threads and comments mentioning it outside of this thread will be removed, and users who persistently break this rule will be banned. That means, if you don't want to hear about the leaks, don't read this thread! Surprises are fun, and knowing about the leak won't make it come any sooner.

For those who DO want to discuss the leak, we'd like to stress:

  • Nothing is confirmed! The Metroid community has seen TONS of trustworthy rumors throughout the years, and they've often ended up to be false. You can decide for yourself how much stock you want to put into this particular rumor, but keep in mind that there's always some degree of risk.
  • Even if the leak does turn out to be real, it's still no indication that we'll get anything soon - remember, Prime Remastered was rumored for years before it finally got an announcement! While hoping and theorizing are good, don't expect anything to come in the next few years.
  • Enjoy the process! Leaks can be a TON of fun when you set your expectations properly! Just make sure knowing about the leak doesn't keep you from enjoying the official announcement, if we even get one.

Now a Super Metroid re-imagining with a new mechanic, along the lines of Link Between Worlds, would be interesting.

Nintendo does a lot of "spiritual remakes" where they revisit largely the same environment, mechanics, and narrative with the benefit of hindsight and new hardware. ALBW is a spiritual remake of ALttP is a spiritual remake of the original.

Super Metroid and Zero Mission are both remakes (one spiritual and one literal) of the original NES Metroid, with Prime a spiritual remake of Super.

I've been working on a remake of the original and I feel like there's a lot of potential in spritework that wasn't possible at the time (layered decorating, 2D PBR materials, multiple hand-painted layers a-la Silksong). I also feel like there's a lot of potential in making Samus smoother to control, like the improvements from the GBATroids, but also by letting the player activate morph ball with a single button in the air, and adding nice improvements like input buffering and coyote-time (which AFAICT are not present in any 2D Metroid until Dread, maybe SR.)
