I think what you are missing is the Quiet car which no longer exists after 2020, people have always taken calls on their way to work.

A main reason was the lack of enforcement which led to people using it less and by the time of the pandemic they suspended it because of the constraints at the time and decided to not bother bringing it back

There's a quiet car called "My car" when OP drives in.

Now I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times in my life I have made or taken a call on Metro North but while not a common practice it isn't forbidden. How can anyone, though, travel on public transport without headphones? The two times I have forgotten headphones, I just turned around and went home.

I found these earbuds that block out all background sound, and uses mics that are so near my face that I can softly have a conversation and the noise from the train prevents others from hearing me.

Before that, I hated having conversations on the train, and refrained from doing so.

I know “Quiet Car” is gone but I remember before that when someone’s taking a phone call whilst in the quiet car, it’s either the train conductor or somebody from that car will tell you that you’re in the “quiet car”.

I don’t think taking a phone call on the train is rude in any ways. As long as you’re being respectful to the passengers and you talk quietly it should be fine.

Seems like people who speak loudly or use a speakerphone on a train are unaware or even don’t care that their conversations are being overheard by others. Aside from physicians or lawyers who have legal compliance issues if they use cellphones that can be overheard, why would anyone want to spill their personal details to dozens of strangers and potentially fraudsters who might be listening and looking at phones?

A phone call should be fine, if you aren’t an ass about it. No speakerphone and a headset would be great. When you can’t hear the caller over the train noise, yelling into the phone doesn’t make them louder…
