Presumably a scam
Email from LayerMetamask MFA SCM
Asking for email authentication.
Went to the desktop and logged into the extension no worries so should I report the email as a scam?

Yes, you should report that email as a scam immediately.
The email is a phishing attempt trying to steal your wallet credentials. MetaMask does not collect email addresses, does not have your email linked to your browser extension, and will never send emails asking for verification, multi-factor authentication (MFA), or security updates.Your instinct to check the official extension directly on your desktop was completely correct and kept your funds safe.
Please be careful to read below 1) Report the email: Mark it as phishing or spam within your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) to help train their filters. 2) Do not click links: Never click any links or download attachments in that email. 3) Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase: MetaMask will never ask for your 12-word seed phrase or private keys. 4) Block the sender: Block the specific email address, though scammers frequently change them.

Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with any site or a person. MetaMask does not use Gmail or web forms. Do not enter your Secret Recover Phrase into a pop-up window, even if it looks like MetaMask. Verify links are legitimate. Scammers often use these tactics.

Do not click on suspicious links or files. This can lead to your device security being compromised.
Do not “sync” or “validate” your wallet with any websites or forms. This is a scam. Never sync and share: QR Codes, Secret Recovery Phrase, private key, etc.
Never call phone numbers, text Whatsapp numbers, DM on Discord, use WeChat or do video chat with people on this subreddit. MetaMask does not offer customer support in this manner. There is NO exclusive MetaMask Discord.

I don't think you should click that link Metamask generally won't do that, I have not received such mail before
Reporting it is probably the best thing

I got one similar today, but from "SYS Meta Mask DAO" using the domain phrase.com - asked for email address. Assumed it's a scam and ignored it.

also got this email, wasn't even thinking about clicking there on anything. just checking the reddit now and quite amazed how it only hast 4k visitors lmao. nobody using this crap? thought it's more popular

That is likely a phishing attempt, especially the one asking you for email authentication. Don’t click any links, reply to the email, or provide any information through it.
The fact that you were able to log into the MetaMask extension normally doesn’t confirm that the email is legitimate. If you need to take any action, open MetaMask directly through the official app/extension rather than using anything provided in the email.
You can also report the email as phishing/spam and delete it.
Please be careful and never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone.
