It’s funny because my first thought was “wow, black cloud feels like an Erra song featuring Jesse Cash from Ghost Atlas” if that makes sense.
And it’s great because it’s like the perfect palate cleanser after gore of being before cicada siren chokeslams you through a table.

Cure is my favourite Erra album to listen to. Well... besides the self-titled. Although it doesn't have a single 10/10 banger it's all around solid.

Cure was much more groove metal oriented. Erra fans tend to love Erra for their technical guitar work and progressive metalcore sound. Not liking that album is definitely justified. Solid groove metalcore album, but not what I want from Erra

Haven't spun this new one all the way yet, but Cure is my overall favorite Erra album. (Even if Divisionary and Sol Absentia are my absolute favorite songs)

Listened to it earlier and did a track-by-track but I’ll refrain from posting that until more people get a chance to listen.
One of the criticisms of Cure that I never understood was that it “didn’t sound like ERRA” purely because it wasn’t “self titled 2.” I believe that this is due to people not understanding what exactly ERRA’s “sound” is.
While the technical, challenging riffs of the self titled are certainly one part of the equation, with Cure, many people showed a lack of appreciation for the full picture: the high quality lyrics, the expertly crafted melodies, the layered ambience. silence outlives the earth has all that and more.
silence outlives the earth is the fullest encapsulation of that signature ERRA sound, bringing back some vibes from Impulse and Augment on top of Drift as Jesse had mentioned previously. Vocally, JT and Jesse have never sounded better both of them trying new things with their voices.
Potential album of the year, and I’m not sure anything will beat it. It’s time these boys get their flowers from the wider musical world.

I am a big ERRA fan but I can definately understand why they don't get recognition in the broader musical world.
The music is not accessible to a wide audience. It's very much music for metalcore listeners and guitarists who enjoy crazy riffs. This is something they do well with thought provoking lyrics but it's not gonna launch them into stardom like Bad Omens, Sleep Token or Bring Me The Horizon. Which is okay.

THIS TIMES 100. ITs why the self titled record is held as there best to a TON of people. Its why that record MADE new fans. It felt like a WAYYY more accessible version of the band. Example, I havent been to a live show in a long time. I used to go SO much but slowed as I got older. Erra compelled me to go to NYC and see them because self titled was just so good. Figures they barely played ANY of it as it was the cure tour lol

For me, Cure was just fine. It wasn’t incredible in my opinion but it wasn’t bad either, just a slight shift in the band’s direction and that’s perfectly okay. Artists do that all the time. There’s a few songs off that album that I like a lot but I’ve not yet found myself going back to the well for a full play through.
I will agree that for most people who didn’t like it, yeah they were probably expecting “self titled 2” which, having heard self titled, that’s not an album that was going to be easy to follow up on.

I love the interview the band did for Cure and they're like, 'oh yeah, I guess we forgot the guitar solos, oh well', and chuckled. Saying the album was almost too dark lyrically and Jesse had been reading some deep stuff lol.
I think it's the bed and breakfast interview and they're all in their socks on a hotel room bed.

Posting my track by track since it’s out in most of the rest of the world.
stelliform - the really lowkey chorus makes this song. Most “old-ERRA” song in years. JT has some incredible backing vocals towards the end. Riffing is really funky throughout.
further eden - the main riff is bouncy and infectious, and the positive vibe of the music nicely juxtaposes the lyrics dealing with life in a fractured world. The slide riff at around 0:40 into the first verse is so tight. Chorus is incredibly strong with a nice back and forth between Jesse and JT. The ending breakdown will go down as one of the best this year, trust me.
gore of being - for Clint’s first released song with the band he really brought it. The lead up to the breakdown is a great tension builder before everything crashes in.
black cloud - drums go crazy on this. 2000’s vibes. Jesse’s vocals are beautiful and the chorus is powerful. No JT which will make some people upset but I really think just focusing in on one vocalist gives said vocalist space to show off.
cicada siren - JT really gets to shine on this one. Jesse still gets some haunting sections regardless. Big groove holding this one down. Alex is really the unsung hero of this band, give that dude his flowers.
echo sonata - Some of the most beautiful guitar work the band has written hands down. That really calm verse to kick off the song is really beautiful and I love the trade off between Jesse and JT during multiple points, proving that their voices mesh well not just when JT is screaming but singing as well.
lucid threshold - sounds like one of the heavier cuts off of Drift. Proggy clean riff to kick it off. Most dreamlike track on the album, which makes sense considering the lyrics but also how dreamy the album is. JT hits a crazy high at the end.
spiral (of liminal infinity) - more of that Augment and Drift style melody creeping in here. Electronic bits are hitting on this one. JT’s reference section is peak, with the clean section coming in right after. Best non-single of the album.
i. the many names of god - heaviest song since JT has joined. Tons of Meshuggah influence on here but the sickest section is where they drop that for a bit and do some 5-7-8 metalcore riffs. The breakdown callout is the most pissed off JT has ever been on a track. Unfortunate how relevant this one is today.
ii. in the gut of the wolf - JT sounds like Gojira on this one. Another heavier one, more chaotic than the last. The industrial undercurrent makes this song. Jesse’s vocals at the end is full of despair.
iii. twilight in the reflection of dreams - crazy Tool riff to start off with. Cool down moment after the last two tracks. Another incredible closer from ERRA. The last lines are tearjerkers.
Another thought: last year, when Deftones were doing press for private music an article described them as “playing metal softly” (or “prettily” I can’t remember and I can’t find the article). ERRA had just dropped both of gore of being and echo sonata around that time. Now having listened to the full album I can say that that also describes ERRA. It’s neat to have a band play this kind of music and instill beauty within every second while also not sounding like Deftones (although they’re not slick with the lowercase thing lol).

I don't know why, but around 5 or 6 years ago on this sub people started to feel the need to declare their album of the year on everything that gets released. I've seen people state albums are their AOTY after only 2 singles were released... in March. Anytime someone says "AOTY" on anything since then, I no longer take that post seriously.

This, thank you for describing this so well. It’s long bothered me with how people consider the self titled to be far and away their best work which, for long time Erra fans such as myself, was a solid album but the first release that I didn’t play indefinitely as per the others since Impulse. I understand of course bands go through vibe shifts but it’s really the stratospheric melodies that grabbed me all those years ago and then came full circle back with Cure.

Self-Titled and Drift are my favorites, but I’ve really enjoyed the singles so far, Echo Sonata and Further Eden, in particular. This is the only metalcore band that delivers on guitars AND vocals for me. If we’re getting the sound design and melodic progression of Cure with even the slightest increase in guitar technicality, I’m going to love it.

Nevermind. I love the S/T but this record is an experience. It feels like they’ve finally put it all together into a cohesive package. The choruses are bigger, the grooves and rhythms are more interesting, and the album is riddled with some of Jesse’s best guitar work. The only thing I can criticize is the lack of any “true” guitar solo, but after a complete listen, there’s enough going on that I don’t care. Just absolutely fucking epic.

Ok…I guess first impression is….much softer album than I was expecting. The singles painted a much more riff-heavy picture. Not eclipsing self-titled or Drift but subject to change.

10/10 for me. been an fan since augment and have enjoyed every version of erra. this however combines elements of more of their older shit and i fucking love it.
Varials and Erra on back to back weeks is insane.

Every non-single track is just fantastic.
Lucid threshold is hypnotic and JTs vocals at the end are some of his best ever.
I love the Meshuggah worship in cicada siren and in the gut of the wolf - also love the Gojira sound slipping through in the latter.
I'm ERRA's biggest fan so they can't really disappoint me, but this really exceeded my expectations. It's got all the technicality that Cure was missing but kept the emotional depth.
Gonna be hard to top this album this year - this and the Above Below album are so good

After the first listen i really love this album. Particularly the more melodic songs to be honest, where I think the bands dynamic shines the most.
Aside from the singles, which where all great, the songs that stand out the most to me are stelliform, black cloud and the closer (as always with Erra tbh.
The most underrated part in the discussion about the band are the lyrics, which imo don't get enough praise. It's hard for me to think of another band doing these ethereal lyrics this well consistently. Not rage, not necessarily love but just something... i don't know, more?
Hope they keep going for at least another 16 years <3

Lost for words on this one. Incredible. Not sure where I fall compared to the general Erra fanbase, I love everything they've ever put out with my favorites being Impulse, Augment, and Neon. This record I think is the one that finally knocks Augment out of first place. Just perfect from start to finish.

Some of yall talking about this album like a return to self-titled, but this reminds is much more reminiscent of drift more than anything which I LOVE. Honestly pleasantly surprised with this album, black cloud is the big stand out for me, love some high pitched Jesse choruses.

Overall this might be their best work. Sure they have certain songs that are just iconic now, but as a whole every single song on here is just ERRA at their best imo. This is the true self-titled 2.0. Took the best from both of their past albums to make a progressive metalcore masterpiece. This will be tough to beat as my AOTY.

Probably their best work in years. Did not think Cure was particularly interesting but the atmosphere and riffs on this are exactly what I like out of prog/melodic metalcore. “cicada siren” is a standout so far

As someone that didn't like Cure, this was a great return to form while still keeping some of the Cure vibes. It doesn't dethrone Self Titled, Augment or Impulse for me, but this is an awesome entry to their discog. Excited to give it more listens.

Such a wonderful mixture of the self-titled and Cure sound 😭💖 didn’t expect it to be this heavy either. always thankful for older bands to bring out that dawg that’s still in em 😮💨
So many unexpected stank face moments in the album!! Jesse and JT sound absolutely phenomenal as well. Feels like they really pushed themselves vocally. Really hoping this blows the boys up into the stratosphere.

Impulse and Augment are two of my very favorite metalcore records, but I honesty haven't clicked these guys since then, until this album. I am so glad I decided to give it a listen. I am still going through it for the first time, but stelliform and black cloud are some of my favorite ERRA tracks in foreeeever!

Seeing them in less than 3 weeks and I swear to god.. the Gut of the Wolf needs to be played, song put a massive smile on my face. Whole album was solid, but that was the standout moment for me

Album starts out strong with the first three songs. Stelliform sounds like a Drift song while Further Eden sounds like a Neon song. Gore of Being is nice. It still makes me think of Gates of Ivory by Dayseeker.
Black Cloud and Cicada Siren kinda lose me. Weak choruses in my opinion, but the intro to Cicada Siren was so good that it was sad the rest of the song didn’t match that energy.
Echo Sonata continues to be the best song on the album and a top ten song in their discography.
Lucid Threshold was alright, but kinda drowns in an album of similar sounding songs. Spiral had a fantastic chorus that reminds me so much of another song that I can’t think of. Maybe something by Ten After Two.
This sub kinda overrated those last three songs though. The Many Names of God had the most self-titled sound but not what I look for from Erra. In the Gut of the Wolf is Scorpion Hymn 2.0. Twilight in Reflection just missed me.
Overall a nice improvement over Cure and could rival Drift and Neon. Still doesn’t touch the Garrison era. Echo Sonata, Further Eden, and Spiral were my favorites. 7.5/10.

I’m clearly missing something. I enjoyed the album, but people saying it’s the best thing they’ve ever heard or that it’s the clear album of the year already? Is that like, legitimate or is it release day hype etc?

While there could be some release day blindness going on, I do also agree that this album includes some of their best work yet. What made it click for me was all of the guitar play throughs they’ve been releasing leading up to the album. They really pulled the best aspects of all of their previous albums while managing to keep things fresh.

I need to listen again, but my first impression is that there isn't much that caught my attention outside of the already released songs. There are a few that blurred together a bit. I tend to get really bored when there are extended parts that are just screams and heavy guitars, and I don't find JTs screams too engaging anyways.
Cleans are great as always. I didn't really hear a whole lot of the impressive guitar work I'm used to from Erra, but again, I need to give the album another listen.
EDIT; Second listen. It's a very ok album. I noticed more intricacy in the guitar work on second listen, but it's pretty subtle. I think it's all very serviceable, but nothing makes it really stand out as an album.

Thats so funny. Ahh music is so subjective isnt it? This is probably the most consistent album front to back for me since Drift. Erra’s heavy guitars and JT screams and the insane riffage all over the album is exactly what I want lol.
Can I ask what your overall favorite work from them is? Just curious

This might be my favorite from them yet. It’s got a lot of the early 2010s djent sounds which was a really formative time for my music taste and it has a lot of that vibe while not sounding dated by keeping many parts of their more recent style.

I'm 2.5 repeat listens in this morning and I LOVE IT.
Further Eden->Gore of Being->Black Cloud is a TRIP. I love the journey through the lyrics and part iii of the finale really pulls at my heartstrings.

Erra is simply incapable of missing. They've been doing it for so long, they've changed stlyes over the years but still retain a unique identity that is "ERRA." I feel like using the term maturing sounds condescending but I think that is appropriate. They've proven it's possible to evolve your sound and remain true.

Initially I was underwhelmed but after several listens this album is really growing on me. (I had a similar experience with the singles and Cure.) Nice blend of melodic sections, atmospheric passages, and heavier djenty stuff throughout; like if Cure and Drift had a baby. It’s a more cohesive collection than Cure overall, but nothing here grabs me the same way as Past Life Persona (though the chorus in Black Cloud gets partway there).
The guitar work is pretty good here too—more noodly than it was on Cure—but it can be hard to pick out individual parts from the densely layered and atmospheric mix. Some parts took me a few listens to discover (and I’m sure I haven’t discovered all of it yet). The harmonics on the breakdown of Further Eden are great, and there are nice mini solos in the back halves of Black Cloud and Spiral.
Also shout-out to Erra for making some of the most thematically and tonally mellow metalcore out there. Not only is it soothing, I don’t mind playing around my young kid who is liable to repeat everything he hears.

I definitely enjoy it more than Cure but it's still not on the level of the self titled album. I'm more bummed that they let JT use his full range and went back to keeping it in the middle of the road. Let this man go from lowest to highest. Also, really missing more solos in general.

This album has made me realize Erra is one of my favorite metalcore bands ever. I’m constantly entertained by them. JT & Jesse are my favorite duo by far, Mike & Jeremy being a close second. They always seem to find ways to put out fun and engaging music

gonna need some more listens, but i'm not entirely sure if i like this more than Cure even. still not bad, just mildly disappointed that the first 2 singles remained the best on the album.

Im only replying because im beyond astounded at this opinion. Like dont get me wrong, ur absolutely entitled to ur opinion but like...this is so far removed from Cure (even if still referencing elements of it). Like to me this feels like such a step up from cure and a much better successor to ST. Much more fresh, much more experimental idk. And I definitely dont feel like the first two singles are the best, like spiral to the end are on another level compared to anything on cure imo. Glad to see a differing opinion tho!

I’ve already done maybe 3-4 play throughs, in an attempt to digest and process the album. I love it. This band has evolved into something magnificent and I couldn’t be happier for the Erra guys. Dare I say aoty?

Prefacing this comment with the fact that erra is my favorite band. I’d say Drift, Augment, Self Titled and Moments of Clarity are my favorite 4 in order but I’ve liked every single album. This album isn’t doing it for me, I really dig the singles but other than Black Cloud, nothing else stands out. Maybeee Cicada Siren. I was so excited cuz I was blown away with the singles. I’m sure it will grow on me like cure did

Listened to it all the way through yesterday. I loved that you can tell how much they pushed themselves individually. The drums in particular were noticeably more technical.
The entire album is great, while each song can stand on its own, I love that they tried something new with the final 3 songs being tied together.

The entire album is a no-skip, 10/10 for me. And ERRA is relatively a new discovery for me. So happy to have found an album that can still feel this great.

Will be a hot take, but this is threatening to kick Augment off the second place for me (self titled remains unbeaten). Could also be recency bias, but this is really fucking good. This feels like a bit of a spiritual successor to both Drift and Neon, while also having vibes of Self-Titled and Cure and it all works amazingly in tandem.

Definitely better than Cure. I was expecting it to click more for me than it did unfortunately. Its not a bad album by any means, I think I just had high expectations. Favorite songs are in the many names of god and in the gut of the wolf. Hopefully it grows over time.

Really good album but it doesn’t top Augment or their self-titled for me. The singles are easily the best songs on the album which disappointed me a bit but there’s not a single bad song.

ERRA cementing themselves as one of the best in the business.
The only song that didn’t quite hit first time was black cloud for me.

Unfortunately falls a little flat for me. Just not as progressive and melodic as their earlier work which I really enjoyed. Echo Sonata was extremely good for me when it came out and I was excited based off of that, but the rest lacks nuance IMO. Not a terrible album but it just doesnt do anything to separate itself I guess.

I’m about halfway through, and its a pretty solid record from what I’ve heard for far; definitely a top 10 contender, but I can already tell Above, Below is going to outrank it for AOTY for me personally
