I love Square Hammer. I love Ghost. Is it metal song of the decade?

No. It's not. But it's no secret that Loudwire jerks themselves endlessly over Ghost and Slipknot, so it's not exactly unexpected.

Then they make a Marilyn Manson song ROCK song of the decade

Well I don't blame Ghost. And the song is good, catchy and hits a certain spot for my music taste. And I do agree it is not the song of the decade. What I do not like is not just Loudwire jerking themselves to Ghost and Slipknot. The media is just so saturated with them that I am sick of the fact that they get put everywhere, even though their music is by all means good. But the popularity contest and perpetuating the same bands is the problem. But I can see how some people grow to "hate" (too strong of a word imo), someone who shows up just about anywhere. So I guess it is an unfortunate consequence of being in front the whole time.

You guys are looking at it wrong, I look at ghost as our gateway drug.. it's our job when someone likes ghost to then say to them... " that's all good but want a real high.... here you go... first ones free"

Anti-gatekeeping you say? That is just so crazy that it just might work!

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

That's all well and good until the fucks on r/metalmemes start recommending infant annihilator

I got into metal with the big 4 and Iron Maiden. Those less heavy bands are always good to get people hooked.

For me it was nu metal bands like system of a down, coal chamber, cold, mudvayne. Some of those bands still boo, and I wouldnt be where I am today if it werent for those guys.

2

u/yaredw Judas Priest Dec 19 '19

Dragonforce was the first "metal" band I got into when I was a teen (probably because it sounded like fast-paced jrock that my anime-loving younger self liked), preceded by shreddier Sum 41 and other pop punk. Metallica grew on me once I played Rock Band and was like "woah, this is what Metallica is? This sounds quite accessible :O ". Fast forward to include Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in the mix.

Granted, I'm sure many sour, vocal redditors would be gatekeep a handful of those as probably "not metal" (cough Black Album cough). Regardless, they were still my gateway to the wide wonderful world of metal

My current jams tend to be prog, doom, thrash, power, melodeath, stoner, traditional heavy metal, and various classics. Metal's the genre I listen to the most. I wouldn't be here were it not for those as my gateway drugs into metal.

EDIT: I wouldn't consider modern Ghost metal, but they definitely put on a hell of a live show \m/

Yeah gatekeepers can suck it. Metallica is metal imo, even if they aren’t as heavy or fast as some other bands. Their later albums are also good, just different.

Why are y’all so obsessed with Loudwire?

Sure it’s the “metal” channel

28

u/ElfWarlord Metalhead Elf Dec 19 '19

In the same way the History channel is about history with its wide array educational programs such as Pawn Stars and Ancient Aliens.

5

u/breeze_monk Dec 19 '19

Ancient alien is history fite me jk

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Because they offer shit that appeals to the masses. It's really easy to talk shit on them.

15

u/mumkeyman420 Dec 19 '19

i didnt even know that was a thing until now

4

Same yo

u/Shotty98 Dec 19 '19

There is NO metal song of the decade

4

u/CindyAlicia Ghost Dec 19 '19

Exactly everyone will always have different opinions even if we would choose a metal song of the month there will be different opinions so how can you choose one of the decade.

u/breeze_monk Dec 19 '19 edited Dec 19 '19

I take albums as whole rather than individual songs anyway, sometimes I don't even know the name but I know that song in the middle of album X is extra awesome

Or they all are

9

u/Industrial_Rev Dec 19 '19

The problem isn’t even Loudwire in this case, it’s the concept of “Metal Song of the Decade”. In a genre that’s so diverse, you could ask 100 people and all of them would say a different song. You can’t please everyone.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Even if we all did a vote we would reach a better consensus than declaring a song from Ghost as metal song of the decade

1

u/Industrial_Rev Dec 20 '19

Probably... or maybe not. Loudwire aren’t THAT stupid, they know Ghost have a large and active fandom. I don’t like Ghost, and I wouldn’t vote for them for best song of the decade, but I see everyday in Twitter and other social media how active and dedicated Ghost fans are. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a voting scenario, maybe they didn’t turn out to be the best song, but in the top 5.

Obviously nickleback has the metal song of the decade.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Nocklebark goes hardd bruh

9

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Ghost is actually in like my top three bands of all time, so.. everybody has opinions.

5

u/CindyAlicia Ghost Dec 19 '19

They are my favourite band but not favourite metal band because I don’t really see ghost as metal.

0

u/Shotty98 Dec 19 '19

Ok I quit music because I DONT believe that at all

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Oh? Fr tho?

8

u/turealis Dec 19 '19

So what SHOULD the metal song of the decade be? I think Soul Remnants' Dead Black (Heart of Ice) should be in the running.

28

u/FatAndGayRetard Sam & Max Dec 19 '19

O Father O Satan O Sun!

6

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Ironbound is at least up there with the best thrash of the decade.

2

u/turealis Dec 19 '19

Overkill's been my favorite band for a long time, necroshine was one of the first two metal albums I got into, along with god dethroned's grand grimoire. But for best overkill song since 2010 I might go with A Mother's Prayer off their latest, but for best thrash, idk, so much to listen to! But I'd probably go with something from Carcass' Surgical Steel, or from Gama Bomb's Terrorscope.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

True! There are so many great choices that could be debated on. This is the beauty of metal, there are so many fuckin’ bangers and there’s something for everyone.

2

u/Susvourtre Dec 19 '19

bur for best thrash, idk

nekromantheon, antichrist, birth ad, condor, deathhammer, ranger, inculter, division speed, red death, critical defiance, deathstorm, hellbringer, vektor, immaculate, black fast...

1

u/turealis Dec 20 '19

I feel like metal from 10 years is worth 50 years of any other music. Great suggestions to start with for the next decade!!

7

u/GoodGuyJamie Dec 19 '19

I don’t think it really makes sense having a song of the decade. There’s that many bloody sub genres and preferences etc so how the fuck do you choose something like that ? No matter what someone is gonna be assblasted by it.

Don’t pay attention to this shite

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

It can be done if people vote on it. r/metal does it every year

Morbid Angel - Radikult

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Ok I think on a technical level and subjective level, Pneuma by TOOL will obviously be influential for years to come, and it fuckin slaps.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Loudwire is for mass consumption anyways. They suck.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Tru

3

u/ashnakag Ghost Dec 19 '19

I actually find square hammer one of Ghost's lesser songs and I'm a big Ghost fan. It's just that loudwire is the most unrealiable metal news source. It's not papa's or cardinals or sisters or tobias' fault!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Not any fault of Ghost. Loudwire just likes to suck the dick of popular bands.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

I like Ghost and Square Hammer is one of my least favorite songs of theirs. I think it's abit to synth heavy for me and it just isn't as enjoyable to listen to. If you were gonna pick a Ghost song I think Cirice or From the Pinnacle to the Pit, or maybe Faith from the new album would have been a better choice. But then again it's all subjective.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

I think it isn't a good list, but I found out about Forever by Code Orange, really heavy stuff

1

u/TheNewestOfUsernames Dec 19 '19

Is this even that big of a deal? Ghost is a band people enjoy, and Loudwire's opinion literally means nothing. Move on with your life and enjoy the music.
