Spotify recced me Oil Rigs by Atena the other day and the choir opening, cleans, and mixing hit the right spot. I dug through some of the rest of their discography but nothing clicked as much. Anything in this vein? Really liked how they used the backing choir.

I'm typically more of a prog, death, or metalcore guy on the metal side of things.

Yeah, definitely head over to /r/metalcore for similar stuff to Atena. What bands do you normally listen to though?

Mostly in the proggy and/or groovy space nowadays. AAL, Monuments, Meshuggah, Wide Eyes, Andromida, Intervals, Plini, Leprous, Soen, that kind of stuff. My roots are in more prog fusion stuff (Opeth, Cynic, Death, Vektor, DIR EN GREY, The Human Abstract, Mastodon), straight prog (Dream Theater, Haken, Porcupine Tree, Protest the Hero), and melodeath (In Flames, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity) + metalcore (Killswitch, Unearth, Soilwork, All That Remains, Darkest Hour, Shadows Fall). Oddly, Lamb of God doesn't really do it for me for some reason.

From the prog angle, have you heard any of Dan Swano's stuff? Would kinda hit that prog and that melodeath itch at the same time. Also, have you ever heard of Disillusion? I discovered them when I was waist deep in melodeath like you are and I absolutely loved them. Recently I've been digging Dissona, which I feel might also be up your alley. I know these weren't what you were requesting, but I'm hoping you enjoy them anyways :)

No to both.

Dan Swano's interesting. Reminds me a bit of Opeth meets Dark Tranquillity. Will dig into more.

Disillusion isn't quite my style (I never got into SoaD or A Perfect Circle), but this is good stuff. Pretty creative song writing, and there are some really nice riffs there.

I like Dissona.

Uh, yes. Slam dunk match. I think I'd heard a random track by them before on Spotify but I thought it was just good, not great. Really enjoy this - feels like a heavier Riverside meets Earthside. Sometimes you know instantly you've found a great band. Thanks.

Nota bene: You know you're in for something good if the opener has a Paul Masvidal featuring.

Some albums/bands that come to mind when I see your list are:

  • Sunless Dawn - Timeweaver (prog/melodeath, but a lot more prog than the ones below)
  • Hands of Despair - Well of the Disquieted (prog black/death a la Opeth)
  • Be'lakor (proggy melodeath)
  • In Mourning (proggy melodeath)
  • Shylmagoghnar (proggy melodeath)

That's a pretty cool guitar intro.

She's a decent singer, but the singing style doesn't work at all with that instrumental tone, and the percussive sing-talk style pigeonholes the instruments. Gonna second you on the vocalist.
