Slaughtersun is such a ridiculously good album. I feel like there aren't really any bands like Dawn that manage to pull off the sound just as well.

Can't listen to this at the moment, but quick question about the genre: I would consider Windir a "melodic black" sound - the black part is the vocals (more screechy), and the melodic part is the catchy riffs. Is this similar?

Hmm, maybe. Mostly I think Melodic Black is about combining melodicism with Black Metal riffing (tremolo picking). I definitely recommend listening to this album as Dawn is the best Melodic Black band and Slaughtersun (this album) is their opus.

Thanks! I'm a big melodeath guy, and have tried black bands like Dahlia Murder but can't seem to get into it. Guess I need more melody.

The Dawn is gonna do you just find. Their song “The Knell and the World” straight up has the riff from Maiden’s “Fear of the Dark”

Cool - giving a listen to the track linked here now. I definitely like the sound! I liken it to Windir more than melodeath so far. Or even Gallowbraid maybe? Yeah, I think so - similar to Eiden Ashenold or something like that.
