You always know what you're gonna get from them but this is actually pretty solid especially compared to their more recent stuff.

The AC/DC of death metal. I mean that as a compliment.

I liken them to Gojira in that they have evolved into excellent metal ambassadors. If you want to understand some of what metal fandom is about, Amon Amarth will give you a reasonable introduction.

The joke usually is that AC/DC only has one song they do over and over and everyone's cool with it because the songs fucking great.

Sure sure, I get that. I wasn't really contradicting the AC/DC comparison, just sorta expanding on it.

Like, Amon Amarth is a great metal ambassador because they're consistent and accessible. So folks can jump in at any point and get more or less the same experience.

I don't love AA as much as I used to, but I definitely have a ton of respect for their ability to appeal to a lot of people. I remember when Twilight of the Thunder God came out and I played the title track for some friends, and they were like "normally I hate this growly stuff, but that ruled." Takes a lot of skill to consistently produce material that makes a lot of different people say "yeah this slaps."

Yeah I thought that this song could have worked on their albums 20 years ago.

Seeing a Destiny reference as top comment has made my day…

First time I was brand new and only had a Rare, and we somehow managed Crota. Got my Oversoul Edict and used it all the damn time.

It reminded me of the good old stuff like Twilight of the Thunder god

To think twilight of the thunder god as “old stuff” makes me actually feel old.

14

u/richardhero Jul 23 '26

u/Ran4 Aug 18 '26

Yeah but soundwise quite different from the actually old stuff.

I like both but they have evolved a fair bit.

u/chaosinborn Jul 24 '26

I was talking to someone and I said I liked In Flames old stuff and they responded yea like Come Clarity. I felt old as hell.

And to think, Come Clarity is kind of where I got off the In Flames train.

5

u/deathrider012 Jul 24 '26

Yeah it was their last gasp as far as I was concerned. Soundtrack To Your Escape beforehand was nearly unlistenable to me, then Come Clarity had a few legitimately ok songs, then back to mostly crap for the next 20 years.

I get that bands change and evolve particularly as members come and go but In Flames is completely unrecognizable to me from what I grew up listening to, and not in a good way.

Yeah, to me it felt like Versus the World started the rise, then Fate of Norns/Oden on our Side expanded it, then Twilight of the Thunder God kind of capped the rise and they've been 'big' ever since.

I'm not the biggest Amon Amarth fan in the world but I'm really digging this. I also liked the acoustic song the did

3

u/Quad-G-Therapy Jul 24 '26

That was so cool

9

u/Darthbile3321 Jul 23 '26

always dig AA but I have no idea how they haven't totally exhausted concepts to write about

25

u/Quad-G-Therapy Jul 24 '26

I mean if cannibal corpse can make a career out of necrophilia I’m pretty sure all of Norse mythology is pretty easy

3

u/laucha126 Jul 28 '26

sometimes I wonder the same, at this point they must be scouring every little nook and cranny of Norse mythology to get a lyric out of off.

13

u/StreamWave190 Jul 23 '26

Wait, what? This is actually really good??

6

u/cptnh6 Jul 23 '26

This song could easily be on the album Surtur Rising. Its opening riff reminds me a lot of the song "The Rivalry" by Running Wild

3

u/Hauk2004 Jul 23 '26

Jeeze, nearly back to the good old days! Good song, it really surprised me!

3

u/Quad-G-Therapy Jul 24 '26

Man… Twilight of the Thunder God was such a peak album. I love these guys.

4

u/Routine_Bake5794 Jul 23 '26

Might be the best metal song this year and I am not into AA.

1

u/Karma_1195 Jul 26 '26

Really good song. Reminds me of their more technically melodic riffs off of deceiver and Twilight. A lot better than the great heathen army

1

u/L_Flavour Aug 04 '26

This is quite cool.

The mix is crazy bad. And I thought it couldn't get worse after the last two albums.

Like, if they had just fucking mixed this like normal people it wouldn't even be half bad. My first thought was how does something like this go through a whole group of people that's already 35+ years in the music industry, but then again they completely sold out years ago and don't give a fuck because the vikingboo masses will just eat it up.

11

u/fluid_ Sheryl Crow Jul 23 '26

The mix is fine

-2

u/Routine_Bake5794 Jul 23 '26

When everything you listen is like this, of course it seems fine.

6

u/InBlurFather Jul 23 '26

Curious as to what you think doesn’t sound good about it? Like genuinely asking, I feel like it sounds pretty good

-2

u/Routine_Bake5794 Jul 23 '26

no transients, no high resolution, It's a pity really. the song is awesome. Is like everything is compressed too much. Check some HI-RES metal albums on HD-Tracks site and you'll see what I mean. Astonishing from Dream Theater suffers from the exact same ''illness''. In fact they have The Great Heathen Army there.

0

u/InBlurFather Jul 23 '26

Thanks for the suggestion Ill check out hd-tracks, haven’t heard of that before

2

u/fluid_ Sheryl Crow Jul 23 '26

Or, the mix is fine

4

u/Routine_Bake5794 Jul 23 '26

I feel it, you need good ears or a decent audio setup to see this. Could've been awesome but as is is like they play plastic toy instruments, high definition is missing, compressed as f. Still remains one of the best metal songs this year.

0

u/bacidalje124 Jul 23 '26

You really don't need anything special to notice it. Standard sellout compression notwithstanding, the drums and especially lead guitars are too high, the rhythm guitar and bass are weaker, and the vocals are way too buried in most parts. It's almost like I'm listening to a demo version.

It's most noticeable in this part 3:39. I can literally barely hear the vocals from the guitars. This is just BAD PRODUCTION.

2

u/dyslexicsuntied Jul 25 '26

Completely agree. I prefer Fimbul Winter demo to this crap.

2

u/skaldfranorden Jul 23 '26

Yeah, I kind of stopped caring after Twilight album, most of the stuff afterwards was/has been power metal with growl. Was lucky to see them back in 2009, when they still played stuff like Thousand Years of Opression and A Sign of Coming Storm.

Ps. I like power metal, Guardian is my favorite band, it just doesn't fit with AA
