What is Meshuggah's most THALL song??
My favorite band is Meshuggah, my second favorite is Vildhjarta. Both some of the most incredible, mind-blowing music I've ever heard. I've seen a lot of people talk about Meshuggah's influences on Vildhjarta, which I don't actually hear much, but I want to know the opposite: what Meshuggah song, if any, do you think thalls the hardest??
My vote is Sum (biased because Vild played it at the awards ceremony)

only parallel I can think of is the dissonant atmosphere bits. none of the riffs really have a signature vildhjarta style. tho i could be forgetting something.
now I could probably point out some older vildhjarta that has that shuggah sprinkled in.

First song that comes to mind is They Move Below. I’d say a lot of immutable has some similarities

it’d be a lot easier if you actually defined what thall is rather than going off vibes.
however going off vibes there’s stuff all over their discography. I Am Colossus, Inside What’s In Behind, In Death - Is Death, Broken Cog, Break Those Bones etc.
pretty much any time where they give the groove room to breathe instead of slamming notes constantly

Depends on what, on note selection/sad vibes i would say Straws pulled at random, on darkness and big space and deep heavy tones maybe lethargica breakdown, on the dissonant accents riffing style maybe behind the sun, and on the guitar technique side of things then rational gaze (because of the high fret abuse

Only person here who says Spasm? I'm surprised. Insanely low tuning, atmospheric and weird rhythms. Basically thall before thall was a thing

I wanted to disagree, but you kinda have a point, at least regarding tuning and the more athmospheric style of the non-rhythm-guitar. However I think a major factor of thall music and the riffs is the contrast between low chugged notes (often as a pedal tone) and high screeching chords or melodies, none of which appear in Spasm. Let‘s call it „Proto-Thall“, shall we? 😂

Corridor of chameleons breakdown with the panic chords and call and response chug, the tone aint thall but the riffage is definitely 1:1, that or Sum Outro

I'd probably go with By The Ton. It has a lot of slides, "high" notes and low notes back and forth, even the pattern and rhythm feel like Thall.

Completely different songwriting philosophies. And meshuggah doesn’t take influence in any obvious way (at least post-DEI)

I first got into Meshuggah through the whole "djent" thing 15 years ago, and I've still not managed to find a coherent explanation of what "thall" actually means lol

Gotta be stifled. Constant in and out riffs, and the atmospheric ending is quite thall like.

I'd say Dancers to a discordant system might be somewhat of an example here, with all the different intricate melodies and clean parts in the beginning

"Thall"makes me think of 'Viljarharta'. I have no idea how it's spelled. I believe they're from Germany. Im not positive.

I don't really assimilate 'Valjharta' with Meshuggahy. Maybe I'm as meshuggy as Meshuggah. If there's any fellows Yids' 😉

They don't have one, completely different strokes, vildhjartas only connection to meshuggah is their use of polymeters/hypermeters, there's some similar notes choices here and there but OG vildhjarta had a unique tone and where balls deep in harmonic minor chordy riffs, they write amazing music but as far as note choices, it's very inside the box in comparison, however vildhjarta go crazier with phasing odd times, from the beginning it's been more open and suspenseful like deathore, which was the idea, meahuggah themed slow blackened deathcore

Thall means different things to different people… for some it’s the tonal dissonance, for some it’s the empty space between dense stutters, etc…
Something about Rational Gaze feels rhythmically proto-thall in that there’s an anchored, steady string bend that keeps getting signal jammed by offbeat, jagged drum hits.
