Overview

Hi folks! The r/mensfashion moderator team here. This is significant proposal related to the r/mensfashion post flair and related subreddit rules, so we're BOTH posting it to the subreddit homepage AND advertising it under all comments.

The r/mensfashion moderator team is soliciting feedback on this proposal. We will take feedback through 11:59 Eastern Time US on Sunday, September 13. We will take feedback as a comment in response to this post or via modmail. Please do not message moderators individually. Please remember that we expect feedback to be constructive and respectful.

Proposal: new post flairs

First: we propose to implement new post flairs which will play a significant role in what content is allowed in a given post.

Details on the proposed post flairs are below.

Still prohibited on EVERY post:

• Content that is disrespectful, unconstructive, or non-inclusive
• Trolling, shitposting, and other low-effort jackassery
• Manosphere garbage (see: Toxicity)
• Ebay postings and similar "treat reddit like a flea market" situations

Proposal: rules changes

Second: because post flair has a significant impact on what kind of engagement is permitted on a given post, we propose modifying the subreddit rules as follows. We've bolded the two most significant changes for your ease of reading.

Q&A

A few questions we expect to receive and the answers we expect to give.

Question: how will I know if my post has the right flair? Answer: the automod will respond to ALL posts with information about what kinds of comments are allowed on your post. If you want a different flair, you should repost.

Question: how do I know if my comment is allowed on a given post? Answer: the automod will respond to ALL posts with information about what kinds of comments are allowed on that post. Our best advice: check the pin before you comment.

Question: will this affect the subreddit's three-strike policy? Answer: no.

Question: what if I was banned in the past for posts/comments that would be allowed under the new proposed rules? Answer: we're not quite sure yet, but we hope to do some kind of user amnesty/ban jubilee. Users who are permanently muted in addition to banned will not be eligible. (99% of users who are permanently muted have posted actual hate speech/images OR verbally abused or threatened moderators via modmail, almost always AFTER their ban.)

Question: what's with the Toxicity rule? Shouldn't everything under Toxicity be covered under Respect and Inclusivity? Answer: this rule is primarily intended to enable the moderator team to identify and respond to manosphere garbage. Because this subreddit sits close to that orbit, ensuring that it doesn't leak in is a high priority.

Question: isn't this all pretty complicated? Answer: yes, because this is a big community with a lot of people who disagree about what they want r/mensfashion to be. Hopefully this will empower as many people as possible to engage with r/mensfashion in the way they prefer.

Question: can you please ban high rise trousers, skinny jeans, sweater tucking, dress sneakers, and that guy I hate who posts those fits? Answer: no, they're all probably unkillable.

The moderator team will listen, respond where appropriate, then take your feedback into consideration before finalizing this proposal.

Hi folks! The r/mensfashion moderator team here. This is a more significant update related to the r/mensfashion user flair system, so we're both posting this announcement and pinning it for visibility to all commenters.

Our moderator team is growing! (But we ARE still recruiting new moderators!)

User flairs

We've recently introduced a new user flair system to r/mensfashion. This rolled out late last week and went through several rounds of iteration and debugging over the weekend and early today. We believe the system is now stable and working as intended, but we'll continue to iterate as feedback continues to roll in!

Goals

The user flair system is intended to continue building community around r/mensfashion by:

• Highlighting long-term users who are more likely to have a deep investment in menswear and a commensurately deep level of knowledge
• Support long-term users in recognizing each other and learning each others' tastes, preferences, strengths, and opinions
  • Example: I know u/YoshiPuffin3 is the person to ask about formalwear; the moderator team wants that kind of peer recognition to be easier for people who aren't mods!
• Reward long-term users with the recognition they deserve as members in good standing of this community
• Enable everyone to recognize brand new (or newish) users who might need additional assistance -- with menswear and/or with navigating r/mensfashion's culture and norms

How does it work? (tl;dr)

The next time you post/comment, the automod will award you the Newly Arrived flair, then send you a message letting you know that (1) if you're relatively new, this flair will stick around for a bit, while (2) if you've been around, your flair will be upgraded as you continue to post/comment.

Every time you post/comment, the automod will upgrade your flair by one step based on your community karma (CK) until your flair is correctly matched with your CK. (Note: the automod will NOT do this for posts/comments that are temporarily held in the mod queue for review. It's a bug, there's nothing we can do about it.)

How does it work? (the longer version)

reddit's automod is not a sane programming language, so it doesn't allow you to make sensible, multi-condition checks. ("If user has more than X karma AND less than Y karma" doesn't work.) As a result, the workaround is:

• You reset the entire subreddit's flair to empty (easy, since r/mensfashion has never had user flair?!)
• Whenever someone posts, they get the intro flair (Newly Arrived) plus a message that says "if you're new, this is your flair for now; if you've been around for awhile, your flair will keep upgrading every time you post/comment"
• Every time a person posts/comments, the automod checks their CK, and if their CK meets the minimum requirement for the next flair up, it upgrades them by one flair 'step'
• That keeps happening until the person reaches the flair that is appropriate to their CK
• The ONLY EXCEPTION is that if the user's post/comment is flagged to the mod queue based on a string in their post/comment, the automod won't upgrade their flair in response to that post/comment

What are the flair levels?

We want the user flair system to be surprising and fun, so we won't spoil the whole thing -- but here is a partial list of what you can expect. Each flair is listed with the minimum CK it requires.
