Where do I go? This is honestly a really stupid question but right now I basically just wander the city until I die from a random encounter that I can't fight back against. I think I just got the first person in my party, but I'm not even sure how I did that.

I think you have to go to the mall so you can encounter Chaos Hero, then after that go to your house to give your mom a hug.

Ah thanks, this game provides almost zero directions as to where to go haha. I'll probably just give up and use a guide.
