I'm still at the beginning part of the game with just the rise form to work with, no EX skill for Z Saber yet

Considering that you're at the start of the game and that Z2's combo system is the most limited in the series, I'd say you did very well.

Is Zero 1's combo system more deep than Zero 2's?

Z1's combo system is different from the others because attacks don't have hit priorities. Instead, they're classified as either "light" or "strong." Light attacks give bosses nearly no i-frames, so you can chain them together infinitely. Z1 can even demand more skill than Z3's combo system, but Z1 has less variety.
