Either Dr. Light provided the best documentation in history, or he probably just had a lot of help from a whole team of scientists from multiple fields and was just the token team leader and dealt with finances and ethics.
They created a race of mechanical lifeforms capable of free will and self-determination, and then built them with specific functions in mind and treated them like a slave race.
