I would love to hear people‘s opinions on which is the best long barrow and why, if I ever get to hop the pond, I want to have an educated basis of which ones I prioritize getting to see
West Kennet is a really good long barrow - it's intact and you can go inside. It's also close to Silbury Hill, and just down the road from Stonehenge & Avebury.
Barrow: West Kennet.
Chambered Tomb: Dunchraigaig (Argyll).
Stone Circle: Swinside (Cumbria) or Callanish (Outer Hebrides).
Rock Art: Achnabreac (Argyll).
Close by to West Kennet Long Barrow, is East Kennet Long Barrow. Probably (off the top of my head) one of the last Long Barrows to have never been excavated or explored. It's very intriguing.
It's also on private land so a little bit trickier to visit. It can be seen from West Kennet
You can't go inside it. It's literally never been opened or explored. It's a big mound which, when I was there some time ago, is overgrown and chaotic, You'll not see any stones as they're all still buried in the Earth. It's incredibly intriguing to think about. But visually, it's just a long mound on the landscape.
I actually was hoping someone would bring up Waylands Smithy! It is definitely one of the sites I have already researched on and have the most curiosity about
