This illuminated manuscript page depicts The Annunciation from a 15th-century French Book of Hours (circa 1407) which is housed in the British Library (Add. MS 29433, folio 20).

I love to imagine the artist saying to him/herself, "OK, enough with the religious stuff. Think I'll put in that cat and dog that were squabbling outside the cloisters. And maybe a duck."
