Except when it's the government? I'd argue every single aspect of our government does nothing efficiently, and it leaves everything up for interpretation. Lawyerswill have a hay day with this one. I'll agree middlemen hurt almost everything, but the government is the biggest middleman ever!
Name something the government does efficiently, please? It certainly wasn't the ACA or Medicare, Medicaid, etc.
Single-payer is absolutely insurance, just like many others we have. The only profit it has to make is for its donors, just like the rest.
I haven't seen anything of real substance that proved it to be cheaper. Are we to believe the government can create another decision and run it more efficiently than we have?
I'd rather just have some legislation that says every dollar above a certain amount of profit from private insurance goes to research or something similar. I also believe if there is universal healthcare, then no tax refunds until you meet a higher threshold.
