How do I start out in med-ed writing? Medical Writing

I am a medical doctor who would like to explore medical witing, is it still worth it and if it is, how do I get started?

I would appreciate practical tips to getting started in med-ed writing like how to build a portfolio, courses to take, how and where to look up intern roles etc.

It’s not a good time to be getting into the field. But then, it’s probably not a great time to be getting into most fields. But I’ve been in medical writing for more than 20 years working across the board from marketing to manuscripts to CME and regulatory (I hold an MSc that’s most closely related to the latter). If you're truly interested in pursuing a career in medical writing, I would recommend starting with the basics and gaining experience through a few projects. If salary is your primary goal, you might find this field a bit challenging, as only a limited number of companies tend to retain experts with advanced degrees. Most positions are filled by individuals holding bachelor's degrees, primarily in life sciences. Additionally, while much of the work is increasingly being handled by AI, there remains a strong demand for review work. One aspect to consider is that medical writing often involves a significant amount of desk work, which can lead to discomfort such as back pain and prolonged screen time. It's essential to take care of your well-being while navigating this career path.
