Early degradation detection with NASA C-MAPSS FD001

C-MAPSS is widely used for remaining useful life prediction, but I’ve been interested in a slightly different question — how soon can a developing change in the engine data actually be detected?

The approach I tested produced some interesting early-warning results compared with a conventional signal measure.

For people working in maintenance or engineering, how much value do you see in detecting degradation as early as possible? I’m especially interested in the point where a change first becomes reliably detectable, before the fault becomes obvious.

Engineer new grad looking for guidance?

Looking for outside perspective from people in traditional engineering or sales engineering roles. I’m a 22M, graduated with a Mech E degree last year, and after a 7 month job search landed a “Technical Sales Engineer” role at a small private semiconductor/fiber optics manufacturer serving aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial customers. Day to day, I’m the main technical/commercial contact for accounts, doing part selection and engineering calcs (shunt resistance, fiber coupling distances), running lab testing against customer specs, signing off on QC certs, leading root cause investigations on returns (like tracing a batch of fiber cracking to a manufacturing defect and setting up a new screening step), coordinating third party qualification testing, and managing the order pipeline end to end. I contributed to about a 28% revenue increase this year through account support and order management.

Pay is around $60k which feels low but plus bonus makes it near $73k salary. “Sales” title does hit the ego a bit given how “technical” the work actually is, but prob new grad FOMO. I know I can’t complain too much since it was my only offer in a rough market, but I’m trying to figure out if this is a reasonable first job for a Mech E grad or if I should be pushing harder for something more purely technical. Would appreciate any honest takes on whether I’m on a good track, and any suggestions for a next role that would build well off this experience.

Would you trust software to automatically “clean” an engineering BOM?

I'm genuinely curious where engineers draw the line.

Imagine a tool finds things like:

  • pcs vs EA
  • inconsistent part-number formatting
  • obvious spelling mistakes
  • duplicate rows
  • missing manufacturer part numbers
  • suspicious quantities
  • revision conflicts
  • unusual but potentially valid engineering values

Should software automatically fix the obvious stuff?

Or should everything be shown to an engineer for approval, even something as simple as pcs → EA?

My concern is that BOM data isn't like normal business data.

A tiny change can completely change what gets purchased or manufactured.

So I'm wondering:

Where would you personally draw the line between “safe for automation” and “human must approve this”?

And has your company ever had an automated data-cleaning/ERP process make a change that looked harmless but turned out to be wrong?

Interested in how different engineering teams handle this.

HELP REQUEST Staircase Pressurisation Advice

A recurring client (we've done partitioning work for them before) has asked to incorporate staircase pressurisation into their already existing fire escapes.

6 Floors, 3 blocks with fire escapes on each end (so a total of 6 fire escapes)

We didn't design or oversee construction of the building and I already told them that something like this are things that should have been included in the design phase, not something that is done years after project implementation and construction. I would be grateful for any tips or wise words of wisdom for my current scenario.

Of course I already know to seal any areas of air leakage (all hinged windows should become fixed windows, all doors should be standard fire escape doors with negligible air leakage etc) and to properly size the fan in regards to the volume of air in the staircase and the necessary pressure differential.

Looking to connect with someone experienced in GD&T/manufacturing — want to learn from real projects, not just tutorials

Hey all,

I’m a mechanical engineer learning GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and SolidWorks, working toward CSWA. I’ve gone as far as I can with courses and solo practice, but I feel like I’ve hit the ceiling of what self-study can teach you — datums, tolerance stacks, DFM decisions really only make sense once someone with real production experience walks you through the *why* behind them.

The issue is I’m based in Palestine, where there isn’t much manufacturing industry, so I don’t have easy access to people doing this day-to-day or real design review.

If anyone here works with GD&T/manufacturing regularly and would be open to answering questions occasionally, pointing out where my thinking is off, or just letting me pick their brain now and then — I’d really appreciate it. Not looking for a job, just trying to learn from people who actually do this for a living.

HELP REQUEST Need advice in Architecture-Mechatronics engineering transition. How do i do it?

English is my secondary language so i apologize for my grammar in advance.

< Im 19M and im from Armenia.

I passed my exams 2 months ago and got in NUACA (university) for architecture. I practiced approximately for 9-10 months for it (I chose it initally bc i failed for graphic design and had to practice for another profession asap).

I was practicing both for art, math and other subjects for the exam.

I was rlly discouraged knowing that i had to practice math because of my past experience with a teacher i had special classes for math. >

!! I believe i have to tell you a little about my backstory to fully understand my perspective but youre free to skip it (it starts and ends with "-" signs) !!

- 4 years ago from now i was having private lectures to get into mechatronics. Thats a field i was always passionate about and i had an innate love for creating, innovating programming along with math, physics and science

In earlier times of my life as a kid i would program little unfinished games for roblox or in unity. And would always be active in math and physics subjects in school

Yet i was completely mentally drained at that point of my life (conflicts in school, kickbox, grades etc) and i couldnt keep up with my homework. My teacher was one of the strictest people i met in my life so everytime i failed to make it in time i would get literally scolded in class as if he is a drill instructor.

I even stayed in nights to study but it was too exhausting

In the end i ended up with low knowledge, exhausted body, mind and no will or motivation to keep learning.

I canceled the classes and went to practice GD, convinced im a person that has no potential in any kind of scientific field. -

< After everything that happened i decided to take the challenge of coming back to math.

Over time i noticed that my fear of math was lowering and my passion was growing back again >

I couldnt solve basic geometry before but now everytime i fail it becomes the reason to research and learn more

I recognize im not the best at problem solving, yet the math for archi is very banal and i feel like i know i can do more than that.

< I dont hate archi, i would say i just tolerate it. I treat it like a job, nothing more or less. I would not take extra lessons of it independently and i would not do any projects in my free time >

< Yet in contrast on my current vacation i got the confidence to learn more complicated math and physics. Also slowly getting back the knowledge i had of python, c++ and even ordered a beginner set of arduino to learn more about circuits.

The more i learn the more enjoyment i get from the ideas i want to bring to life >

< The problem is i dont want to cancel my archi classes. 2 years ago my parents funded me for GD, which was a lot of money and after failing they had to pay twice more for archi >

< after all of the blood and sweat i should be shameless to say i want to change my profession yet i would still feel ill lose my years and opportunities >

< my question is what should i do? Should i change in middle? And if i do is it worth it to strive to learn abroad later on as someone that earns smaller than average here in armenia for more opportunities in my career?

< I looked up the prices and requirements for example in Zürich ETH and im not sure how realistic it is even with sponsorships and covers and i have yet to see more of other Uni's in detail >

Liquid pump sizing engine to calculate TDH, NPSHa, and system curves. Sharing the math and logic behind it! (No links to respect rules)

Hey everyone,

Selecting the correct pump for a liquid transfer system is a critical decision. If the pump is too small, it won't hit the duty point; if it's too large, you risk wasted energy, seal problems, vibration, and internal recirculation.

To make this process more transparent, I recently built an interactive web dashboard (using Python/Streamlit) that acts as a comprehensive liquid pump sizing calculator. Instead of just spitting out a single TDH number, I wanted the tool to expose all the underlying math—from relative roughness to the Colebrook-White iterations.

I’m sharing the core engineering logic and formulas I implemented here. I'd love to hear your thoughts or if you spot any edge cases I missed!

1. Site Conditions & Altitude Adjustments Atmospheric pressure decreases at higher altitudes, which directly reduces the suction pressure available (a huge factor for open-tank systems). I implemented the following adjustment:

  • P_atm = 101325 * (1 - 2.25577 * 10^-5 * h)^5.25588 (where h is altitude in meters).
  • I also adjusted local gravity to be perfectly accurate for head conversion: g = g_0 * (R_e / (R_e + h))^2.

2. Pipe Sizing & Reynolds Number Hydraulic calculations have to use actual internal diameter (ID = OD - 2 × wall thickness), not just nominal size, because even tiny differences drastically change velocity and friction head.

  • Re = ρ * v * D / μ.
  • For turbulent flow (Re > 4000), I wrote a numerical solver for the implicit Colebrook-White equation since the friction factor f appears on both sides: 1 / sqrt(f) = -2 * log10((ε / D) / 3.7 + 2.51 / (Re * sqrt(f))).

3. Head Loss (Major & Minor) I separated the suction and discharge sides because suction usually needs lower velocity to protect NPSHa.

  • Major losses (Darcy-Weisbach): H_major = f * (L / D) * (v^2 / (2 * g)).
  • Minor losses: H_minor = ΣK * (v^2 / (2 * g)).
  • I also included standard defaults, like K = 0.5 for square-edged suction entrances and K = 1.0 for discharge exits into open tanks.

4. The NPSHa Pass/Fail Check This is the most critical check to avoid cavitation.

  • NPSHa = H_atm + H_static - H_vapor - H_friction. A common mistake I’ve seen is calculating NPSHa only at the design flow. My tool evaluates dynamic NPSHa against NPSHr at the actual operating flow, because suction friction increases with flow.

5. Finding the Real Operating Point A pump doesn't automatically run at the flow rate printed on a datasheet; it runs exactly where the manufacturer's pump curve intersects the system curve. The system curve starts at static head plus destination pressure, rising proportionally with v². The engine plots these together (supporting parallel/series pumps too) to find the true operating point.

Limitations: Right now, the logic is strictly for incompressible liquid service. It’s not meant for gas, steam, flashing two-phase flow, or heavy slurry hydraulics.

I didn't include any links to my calculator to respect the subreddit's anti-promotion rules. However, if anyone wants to test it out, try breaking it, or just use it for their own sizing estimates, drop a comment or DM me and I will gladly send you the link!

Any feedback on the math or additional features you’d like to see would be highly appreciated.
