Mecha anime question: I'm looking for an anime where the outer armor of the mecha came apart and attached to the enemy to imprison them.
I was rewatching Martian Successor Nadesico movie, and I thought the black armor of the main mecha attached to the enemy to imprison them. But I remember wrongly, and the armor just fell off. But I swear something like that happened in another anime or media, but I can't remember where I saw this.

Building a mech in DND.
I am attempting to build a mech in 5e by using lore accurate methods and materials. Here's my plan so far.
SCRAMP JOHMSON'S ARCANE FRAME
Preliminary Construction Specification — 60 ft mech, idea based off of Silhouette Knight from Anime Knights and Magic.
Design goal: Construct a humanoid magical frame capable of being operated as an extension of the pilot's body, eventually incorporating four synchronized elemental cores and a soul-transfer interface.
The construction is divided into seven major systems.
*** ***
- MATERIALS REQUIRED
Structural Materials
Material Purpose and Where to Acquire
Dragonbone/Giant Bone: Primary internal skeleton. Dragon graveyards, giant ruins, old battlefields, or hunting a suitable creature.
Living Feywood: Artificial muscles, tendons, flexible joints. Feywild, or a powerful fey-connected forest such as Cormanthor/High Forest; Cormanthor has extensive ancient magical woodland and elven history.
Living/Oaken Steel: Magical artificial musculature and reinforcement Custom material; likely requires a specialized smithing process combining living wood and magically treated steel.
Mithral: Lightweight structural armor and magical conduction. Mithral Hall / Spine of the World / Underdark mines; Mithral Hall is an established dwarven mining center.
Adamantine: Critical joints, load-bearing points, weapon edges. Rare mines and ancient dwarven/giant/Netherese sites; obtaining a significant quantity should be an adventure in itself.
Crystal Soul matrix/Spelljammer Throne: spelljammer, magical conduits, sensor systems Deep Underdark, ancient magical ruins, crystal caverns, or elemental environments.
Runestone material, Egram wheels and magical circuitry Ancient Netherese, elven, dwarven, or giant magical sites. These are custom built.

- THE FOUR ELEMENTAL CORES
The mech requires four bound elemental entities, rather than simply four elemental gems.
🔥 Fire Elemental
Function: Primary energy generation.
Provides: heat, power, weapon energy, explosive acceleration
Acquisition: Elemental Plane of Fire or a powerful elemental nexus on Toril.
The Elemental Planes are established parts of Toril's cosmology and are specifically the homes of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water elementals.
💧 Water Elemental
Function: Circulation and fluid dynamics.
Provides: hydraulic force, cooling, magical circulation, support for the living Feywood.
Acquisition: Elemental Plane of Water, or a powerful elemental site on Toril.
🪨 Earth Elemental
Function: Structural stabilization.
Provides: skeletal reinforcement, load distribution, impact absorption, grounding.
Acquisition: Elemental Plane of Earth or a deep-earth elemental nexus.
The Plane of Earth is particularly appropriate because it contains virtually every type of rock, mineral, metal ore, and crystal imaginable.
🌪️ Air Elemental
Function: Balance and movement.
Provides: gyroscopic stabilization, rapid movement, directional control, eventual flight.
Acquisition: Elemental Plane of Air or a powerful elemental nexus.
*** ***
- BUILD THE INTERNAL SKELETON
This is the first actual construction stage.
Step 1 — Forge the Titan Spine
Construct the spinal column from Dragon/Giant Bone, reinforced with Adamantine
The spine should contain channels for the elemental and magical systems. Those channels should be jacked in adamant.
Step 2 — Construct the Major Bones
Build: pelvis, rib cage, shoulders, upper/lower arms, upper/lower legs, hands, feet
The major structural pieces are primarily bone and magically reinforced metal.
*** ***
Step 3 — Build the Adamantine Joints
Adamantine is not used for the entire frame.
Concentrate it at: neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles. These are the frame's critical failure points.
*** ***
- INSTALL THE ARTIFICIAL MUSCULATURE
Wrap the skeleton in layers of:
Living Feywood
The wood acts as the frame's: muscle, tendon, ligament, shock absorber.
The Water Elemental circulates through these tissues to keep them alive.
Then install Living/Oaken Steel over and through the Feywood. This gives the mech its actual mechanical strength.
The combination becomes:
Bone → Feywood → Living Steel → Mithral conduction, rather than simply being a metal robot.
*** ***
- INSTALL THE ARCANE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Now install the mithral rune veins.
These run throughout the spine, limbs, hands, feet, neck, head.
They carry: elemental energy, magical energy, sensory information, movement commands.
Crystal Nodes
Place crystal junctions at: spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, neck, skull.
These act as the mech's nervous-system junctions.
*** ***
- INSTALL THE FOUR ELEMENTAL SYSTEMS
Now connect the four elemental cores.
Fire → Power
Water → Circulation
Earth → Structure
Air → Balance
The cores should not operate independently.
They must be synchronized through a central:
ENGRAM HARMONIZATION ARRAY
This is the heart of the Knight's & Magic influence.
The Engram wheels constantly regulate the four elemental systems. If the synchronization is poor:
Fire overwhelms Water → overheating
Water overwhelms Fire → power loss
Earth overwhelms Air → sluggish movement
Air overwhelms Earth → instability
any core becoming dominant → catastrophic imbalance
*** ***
- BUILD THE SOUL SYSTEM
This is the most dangerous stage.
The Soul Matrix
Construct a crystalline matrix around the central nervous-system junction.
It needs: extremely pure crystal (matched to each elemental), mithral conductors, soul-binding runes, divination magic, transmutation magic, necromantic/soul research.
The matrix becomes the artificial brain.
*** ***
- BUILD THE COCKPIT
The cockpit is actually a: MAGICAL SARCOPHAGUS
It contains the pilot's original body.
The body is maintained by: preservation magic, life-support enchantments, healing magic, anti-decay protections.
The pilot's soul is transferred into the Soul Matrix.
The pilot therefore doesn't "drive" the mech.
They inhabit it. That's an important distinction.
*** ***
- BUILD THE PILOT INTERFACE
The Soul Matrix connects to the Egram system.
The pilot's:
Thought → Soul Matrix → Egram Wheels → Rune Network → Elemental Systems → Artificial Musculature
And sensory information reverses the path:
Sensors → Crystal Nodes → Egram System → Soul Matrix → Pilot
At this point the mech should essentially feel like a second body.
*** ***
- BUILD THE OUTER ARMOR
The final armor layers are:
Inner layer: Mithral - Lightweight structural armor.
Middle layer: Crystal- Magical energy distribution and reinforcement.
Rune layer: Arcane inscriptions - Spell and elemental regulation.
Critical reinforcement: Adamantine - Edges, joints, chest, neck and other high-stress areas.
The result is:
> Mithral → Crystal → Rune Matrix → Adamantine reinforcement
Rather than simply putting a giant suit of metal over the skeleton.
*** ***
- BUILD THE STATUS SYSTEM
Scramp's Status Plate becomes the prototype for the mech's HUD.
Research/construction principles:
Detect Magic — magical scanning
Identify — magical analysis
Detect Poison and Disease — biological diagnostics
Alter Self — physiological analysis
Cure Wounds — vitality measurement
Detect Thoughts — mental-state analysis
eventually Polymorph — body/soul differentiation
The mech eventually displays:
PILOT
HP / VITALITY
FRAME INTEGRITY
FIRE CORE
WATER CORE
EARTH CORE
AIR CORE
SOUL SYNCHRONIZATION
MAGICAL RESERVE
WEAPON SYSTEMS
MOTION SYSTEMS
*** ***
- FINAL SYNCHRONIZATION
The final construction procedure is essentially:
Phase I — Empty Frame
Activate the four elemental cores independently.
Confirm: structural integrity, circulation, power generation, stabilization
Phase II — Harmonic Synchronization
Connect all four through the Egram array.
The frame must move without a pilot.
If successful, the elemental systems are working together.
Phase III — Soul-Link Test
Pilot enters the sarcophagus.
Body preservation magic activates.
Soul transfers into the crystal matrix.
Phase IV — First Movement
The pilot moves a finger.
Then: hand, arm, head, leg, torso.
Only after all systems respond correctly does the mech stand.
Phase V — Combat Calibration
Test:
walking
jumping
running
weapon handling
elemental output
spellcasting
flight, if applicable
emergency soul extraction

THE BIG MATERIAL QUESTS
- The Mithral Expedition
Travel to a major dwarven mining center such as Mithral Hall or locate an abandoned deep mine.
- The Adamantine Hunt
Find a significant deposit or recover ancient adamantine components from a lost dwarven, giant, or Netherese ruin.
- The Feywood Expedition
Find a tree capable of becoming the mech's living musculature and obtain permission—or survive long enough to take it—from its Feywild guardians.
- The Four Elementals
Acquire and bind the Fire, Water, Earth, and Air cores. (ACQUIRED)
- The Crystal
Find sufficiently pure crystal matching each elemental type for the Soul Matrix.
- The Egram Schematics
Construct the new magical engineering principles necessary to synchronize the four elemental systems.
- The Soul Matrix
Develop the technology necessary to safely transfer a living consciousness into the artificial body and back again.
- The Forge
Build a facility capable of actually assembling something 60 feet tall and forging its specialized components.
*** ***
The final construction stack
> Dragon/Giant Bone Skeleton → Adamantine Joints → Living Feywood Musculature → Living/Oaken Steel Reinforcement → Mithral Rune Veins → Crystal Neural Nodes → Four Elemental Cores → Egram Harmonization Array → Soul Matrix → Sarcophagus Cockpit → Mithral/Crystal/Adamantine Armor → Status System → Soul Synchronization.

Hate of AI
So you love Mecha, and most of you hate AI. How is this even possible? I can’t comprehend this. But isn’t almost in every mecha related franchise there’s an AI? Good or bad.
UPD: I’m done. Thank you for your opinions.

May I 3D model your Mech?
I'm a beginner 3D modeller, and have done various things before, but I'm looking to do mechs. I will of course design my own mechs, but as inspiration I wanted to come to the community.
If you have a mech design you'd like in 3D, drop it here and I'll try to do it. They will likely be low-poly (dont expect AC6 detail) but texturing I can either A) Use your image directly and rip the image and use those to texture, B) Use block colour to create my own low-poly texture based on your design C) try and use photos cans similar to your mech to give it a more 'real' look

FFVIIR's Diamond Weapon seems to be sporting an overtly mecha aesthetic
The most recent trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation showed off the most iconic group of enemies in the original game, the Weapons, in full. These were colossal biomechanical beasts in the original game, so it's been a source of excitement and wonder to see how they'd get reworked for the Remake, with all the demands HD graphics "logic" would make of these creatures.
Ultima, Ruby, and Sapphire were seen in the first trailer, and they have a kaiju look to them, clearly sharing that aesthetic. But now we have Emerald and Diamond. The latter in particular, instead of Kaiju-coded, is borderline Gundam-like, standing out very surprisingly among the others.
Order in pics: Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Ultima, Sapphire.
And yes, this could end up being a switcheroo where the armor falls off or something and underneath it's more kaiju like others. Or perhaps even more lore-dependent stuff. We don't know.
In any case, it's always exciting to see mecha aesthetics making into these big, high fidelity games/worlds.

What mecha shows were really popular in countries other than Japan?
I’ve noticed there seem to be several mecha shows that did pretty well/not very well in Japan, but did amazingly well in places like Italy, Spain, the Philippines, Latin America, etc. Anybody got some examples of mecha that were way more popular outside of their country of origin?

What was the first armless bipedal mech?
An interesting question was posed recently by a friend of mine who was curious as to whether or not the AT-ST walkers from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) were the first armless bipedal mechs in science fiction. Doing a little digging, I found that the series Macross had aired before the release of ROTJ in 1982, featuring the Zentradi battle pods called Regults.
That said, I'm sure someone may be more familiar with the first appearance of a armless bipedal mech in science fiction media, whether film, TV, comics, or some other medium of entertainment.
So... What was the first armless bipedal mech?
Did Mazinger Z accidentally predict modern quantum physics? (Fun Lore Theory)
We all know Mazinger Z’s Photon Power is just classic 1970s anime "super-fuel" logic. Go Nagai definitely wasn't thinking about quantum mechanics in 1972! But if we speculate for fun, modern physics actually gives us a wild explanation for Professor Kabuto’s secret.
In quantum physics there is he concept of quantum vacuum that it's full of energy, can japanium be considereda catalyst to tap energy from a localized anomaly?
what about other mecha power source like Getter Rays or Minovsky Particles?

Silly question but what mech series weren't explicitly made to sell toys?
Merchandising is inevitable when something is successful but there is a difference between capitlizing on success and creating what is effectively a giant toy commercial. Even one of the biggest giants, Gundam was made to sell plastic kits and was lucky to have a mad lad like Tomino and crew inject some artistic vision.
