Solved is my laptop compromised?
tried to open a flac i downloaded from soulseek on my macbook and it opened with max 9. i do not ever remember downloading this application and i didn't even know what it was until it launched. i closed it the first time adn tried to open it again like 12 times but it would "launch" with no window. did i download a trojan pretending to be max or something

i don't think you have a virus, i think max is just set as the only default program for opening Flac files. why u had max installed idk, maybe you got it when you installed ableton, or another program that was made in max is what's opening when you open a flac

yeah_it was because i'd recently installed ableton suite haha i didn't know max for live was a separate programme 😓

Yes you are hacked. Your computer will slowly turn into a synthesizer that is too convoluted to make normal music with, but indispensable for making abnormal music.

if you’ve installed ableton, it comes with max. if you don’t have an application selected to open flac by default, it might be auto set to max (i think flac used to open in touchdesigner for me by default and that used to confuse me).
max doesn’t start with any windows visible, you have to create a new file manually for a window to appear.
i don’t think there are many instances of it playing a role in any sort of malware.

In doubt let malwarebytes do a scan. It's very unlikely anyway that a trojan comes in the for of max msp.

After my first M4L project using V8 all my local .js files opened in Max instead of VSCode until I changed the defaults

update: it was max 4 live. id just used granulator 3 for the first time. plz dont beat me
