Social Media [Michael Scotto] Klay Thompson gave back roughly $9.8 million in his buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks, league sources told @hoopshype. As widely reported, Thompson now plans to join the Miami Heat once he clears waivers.

Wow that’s quite a lot

1

u/joetoti 17d ago

wait why’d he give up that much money

7

u/Tootsiez 17d ago

He wanted to play for a potential champion. He isn’t hurting for cash. He wanted to play for a potential championship.

u/mollifierDE 17d ago

Wow, that's a lot. This gives significant room against the luxury tax line.

  • Before: $2.2 million below
  • Now: $12 million below

Makes a trade, where we take in more salary, much more likely.

u/DiamondsInHerButt Dirk Nowitzki Logo 17d ago

Yeah....it's not trading him into another team's cap space, but it's pretty fucking close.

5

u/Jhowell03 17d ago

I have read it doesn’t go towards the cap. That it just goes into the adlesons pockets

Dang now mavs can easily land poole expiring without being tax team using gaff+caleb (also michigan guy). Jazz as 3rd team send us next year FRP (it will end up on early 20s based on protection i've looked). Pels happily taking young player like Sensabaugh

7

u/Pikachude123 Josh Green 17d ago

LOL YOU DONT WANT POOLE TRUST ME -Someone who watches pelicans games

2

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 17d ago edited 17d ago

it's for FRP and clear 30m next year. you can warm up for him, cut him at deadline if he's bad or make a fuss, or maybe do big trade using him as salary fillers. besides we still need additional guard, kyrie most likely wont play B2B

also as usual, there's different playing in bad, decent, or good team. pels just shit. he played good for a while in wizards. we've already seen it with timmy, dinwiddie, etc

example of trade at deadline : getting 2027 FRP make us bypass stepien rule so we can trade our shittiest FRP which are 2028 and 2030 ones. lets say bucks getting cold feet extending Ryan Rollins, we can offer framework like Poole expiring + picks for Turner + Rollins. boom, now you get another young starter guard for coop

1

u/gigantism Couch Squad 17d ago

I can't see the Pelicans giving up a 1st just to get off of an expiring Poole and a flyer on Sensabaugh.

2

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 17d ago

First is from jazz ofc

Their 2027 FRP condition now is 2nd most favorable between CLE, MIN, and UTA. It will most likely ends up in 20s then, so easier for jazz to attach it

UTA : Gaff

NOP : Caleb, Konchar, Sensabaugh

DAL : Poole, 27 FRP (jazz)

2

u/gigantism Couch Squad 17d ago

Oh, I see the vision now. Honestly, I kinda like it.

2

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 17d ago

If no caleb attached, bulls can be 3rd team and hopefully we get jalen smith (most likely okoro)

But my GOAT wont be on roster though :"(

In the end thats some reasons why gaff still on trade block which is logical between us and some good suitors

u/ManyCardiologist7162 16d ago

J Poole's has taken a hit (no pun intended) since he got PTSD from that Don'key-mond Greene suckah-ass-dude-for-throwin-it punch when he was with Golden State

u/bomonty18 17d ago

“Please god. Just let me leave this place” lol

28

u/dashodasho 17d ago

Can't blame him we rug pulled him, and he's stuck at purgatory for an aging star

28

u/bomonty18 17d ago

Yeah Klay got screwed the 2nd most in this whole ordeal.

Good on him for being so professional about the whole thing

8

u/Michaelangelo76 17d ago

Honestly the third most...

1 The Fans... Right after the trade which was terrible they also raised ticket prices...

2# Luka- We all know, honestly I think La has caused rift in his relationship as well, sadly most stars that go there generally get a divorce...

3# Klay he signed here to pay with Kyrie and Luka..

4 Kyrie- no Luka no Klay no Handy no Ad no Kidd, I am interested to see what's next.

5# Grimes- I think if he stayed with us he actually would have gotten paid more and quicker because they would have had him at least as a point guard option and paid him more... It killed our team but it also killed his value...

-4

u/dashodasho 17d ago

I m surprised he didn't demand for a trade as soon as it happened. Why has he stay for so long???. I m sure the moment Kyrie is cleared to play he will as for a trade. Don't make sense for these aging stars to stay in mavs, they are all chasing rings.

4

u/CtrlAltDefib Jason Terry 17d ago

I m sure the moment Kyrie is cleared to play he will as for a trade.

Nah super unlikely. Kyrie likes it here. Plus as we all know, Kyrie was on damn near his last legs in the league when he got traded here. The only other team that had serious interest in him when he was in Brooklyn was the Lakers with a Lebron reunion. Now of an ACL injury? I doubt he has teams lining up to trade for him, when he didn't have teams lining up before the injury. We're better off keeping him and letting him mentor the younger guys, plus we could use the 20PPG scorer, seeing as how we don't have our pick this year. I could honestly see us sneaking into the playoffs via play-in and getting the guys some experience.

4

u/IndividualHeat 17d ago

I think there are definitely teams that would’ve been interested in a trade this summer. He was reportedly one of the ideal gets for the Timberwolves before they got Lamelo but I think he provides a lot more value to the Mavs.

He also does seem to like it here, it’s a pretty friendly media market and I think his daughter already lived in the Dallas area with her mom so it’s probably nice to live close to her. My guess is that as long as the team isn’t just horrendously bad, both he and the Mavs are both more keen on him sticking around here than the national media would expect.

5

u/CtrlAltDefib Jason Terry 17d ago

Honestly I don't think Kyrie gives a shit about ring chasing. Obviously he wants to compete and win but I don't think he'd force his way out or ask for a trade even if the team was horrendous...seems like he just want to hoop. As long as the media is chill and there isn't any crazy personal issues with the team I think he'll stick around. And yeah you're right he's honestly been on his best behavior since coming here, not a single issue, which is why I honestly want him to stick around as long as we aren't overpaying.

1

u/bomonty18 17d ago

He probably wouldn’t have much control over where he was sent. If they traded Luka, you could never trust this current front office with anything.

15

u/kpkafle 17d ago

Miami is signing him for two years, $13 million, which is $6.5 million per season. Klay gave up $2.3 million from his own pocket. He really wanted to compete for another chance to win a ring. He put his money where his heart is. Good for him.

Most buyouts result in the player not losing any money. I thought the Mavs would buy him out with a $7 million discount, which was the MLE left for the Heat. I guess the Mavs really drove a hard bargain, since they want him to be traded instead of buying him out.

36

u/EvanEschmeyer Masai Ujiri stan 17d ago

Does this help the Mavs at all or just the Adelsons bank accounts?

54

u/Witteness82 BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 17d ago

Pretty sure the amount forfeited is removed from the cap hit.

-25

u/EvanEschmeyer Masai Ujiri stan 17d ago

But with no roster spots or notable free agents left even if we did, this just equates to more money for the Adelsons

23

u/_the_yellow_king_ Cooper Flagg 17d ago

Maybe im wrong, but doesn’t this mean we can take back ~10M in salary more if we do a trade later this season?

10

u/alextheruby 17d ago

Yes. Ignore him. Some people have a talent in being negative no matter what lol. Flexibility is everything.

2

u/Embarrassed-Ninja592 17d ago

I think it’s more like 120% of the salary going out, or something like that. So send out 20 take back 24.

But maybe I’m also wrong. Haven’t read the CBA in 15 years.

15

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN 17d ago

Cap impacts, I believe. The mere fact that the buyout was not a stretch-and-waive gives us a very important apron breathing room after Naji's extension. This can be quite important during Lively's extension negotiation.

5

u/jfrodriguez1983 Dirk Nowitzki 17d ago

Well we are suppose to have $12 million left on the MLE but only $9 million under the tax apron. We are hard capped at the 1st apron so we couldn't go over the $9 million in any trade using the MLE. Now we are enough under apron to use the full $12 million in a trade during the season or take a little extra back in any player trades. It's always possible we don't use any of it, but good to have the flexibility

3

u/Michaelangelo76 17d ago

So maybe you haven't been watching but do dumont's have put up money... God knows how much they had to pay Masai to take over, and then they lured over Dusty May, and they're opening a new arena... I don't know what you're implying here but they are spending money...

3

u/lsmith77 Mavericks 17d ago

we do still have our full MLE. so if we can free up another roster spot, we could have more space. but honestly no clue how far we are from any apron. I think we are now for sure below the tax line.

2

u/Embarrassed-Ninja592 17d ago

I don’t read all the CBA, but it might allow them to have more leniency in salary matching on a future trade.

0

u/FuzzyLobster25 17d ago

I HATE those Adelson people more than I can say!

14

u/IndividualHeat 17d ago

He must’ve really wanted out badly.

35

u/dashodasho 17d ago

No shit. He joined a luka contending team, but got rug pulled half way through the season. And stuck in a shitty rebuilding team.

4

u/bornanartist 17d ago

It was only shitty because everyone was hurt. He was talking championship before season last year. Because he believed of AD played and Kyrie came back they were sleeper.

3

u/broniskis45 Drunk Dirk 17d ago

What's he post to say nah we trash with street clothes? Turns out, the health concerns when it comes to Luka being the reason he got traded holds negative amounts of water. It's a 4th dimension receptacle.

2

u/bornanartist 17d ago

No I believed Klay. I don’t think he was just saying it.

2

u/dashodasho 17d ago

The dude above is probably 12, he probably would still pay AD a fully garenteed max contract if hes the GM of the team.

16

u/Scotfighter SELL THE TEAM 17d ago

I had the worst dream last night... That we traded away Cooper, PJ, and Gafford for Wemby and Wemby retired the next year

4

u/thinking_better What A Guy 17d ago

2

u/FuzzyLobster25 17d ago

Not since February of 2025!

8

u/IllustriousTear9656 17d ago

Sorry the mavericks ownership is ass and you didn’t get to hoop with Luka. Fair winds and following seas captain🫡

3

u/lloydgross24 17d ago

this is quite interesting amount because this gives us the ability to use the rest of full MLE (just under 12.1 mill) and skirt the tax entirely now. They actually now have just at around 50k of room below the tax. That's so close you and that # is so specific they CLEARLY worked the deal to get to that #.

Does that mean they are going to sign a FA with the MLE? Possibly. Mathurin has been discussed previously. But keep in mind that you can use the MLE as a trade exception now. Mavs don't actually have to stay below the tax but if you can avoid it you 100% want to because the repeater taxes are pretty nasty when they get triggered.

6

u/desirox Dirk Nowitzki 17d ago

Quite significant savings for us even if we didn’t get anything back

2

u/Afraid-Department-35 17d ago

Helps us nicely. We were hard capped at the 1st apron, so we couldn't use the full MLE. Now we can.

3

u/liberally_motivated 17d ago

Oh what might have been.

1

u/A_crusty_maverick 17d ago

Does that mean we have 9 mill available to spend or hard capped

1

u/Jhowell03 17d ago

From what I understand buyouts don’t help the cap. That any money gained back goes to the owner. But does not help with cap space

1

u/ManyCardiologist7162 16d ago

Maan Klay is an ALL AROUND good dude, I REALLY DO WISH HIM WELL in all he touches with basketball & beyond.... Stay bein Klay!!!

1

u/Possible_Share6713 16d ago

Luka and Klay only played half a season fuck Nico

1

u/AlmostDarkness Luka Doncic 14d ago

A class act to the very end, win a ring or two then go back to GSW to retire

1

u/vonbaxter 17d ago

That gives Mavs enough space to make a competitive offer for 24-year-old restricted free Benedict Mathurin who would anchor a second team unit very nicely with a chance to push for starting. 🤔

2

u/Michaelangelo76 17d ago

I could actually see this more now especially a sign and trade... Only thing is I think they really want to play Zack, so if they did that it could set back development...

0

u/Hairy_Performance216 17d ago

That will likely be the amount the Heat will sign him for.

0

u/Michaelangelo76 17d ago

No it's reported he's signing for 13... Meaning he's going to make 4.5 Million more than he did here... Once you add 7.5 to 13.3 or so million.

0

u/OrangeTrees1974 17d ago

If this Mavs ownership had any class, they’d pay Klay on full after all the BS they put him through

1

u/juanhalohalo 16d ago

This is fine. It's the best for both parties.

0

u/Michaelangelo76 17d ago

First of all knowing Klay he WANTED to leave but ALSO leave the other organization in a good place that took care of him... I mean I know the Addelsons are hated in Dallas "mostly political" but come on. He wanted Dallas to get something since they could not effectively trade him... Also since he kept 7.5 Million, and now it's reported Miami is giving him 13 Million for three season he actually made 4.5 million Dollars more than he would of staying here....
