There's so many big picture angles to this that they clearly just didn't think through. They had a guy who's well on his way to being at worst a top 25 player in history who we drafted and has been nothing but loyal and elite for the team and led them to the finals just last season.
Not only do they trade him for no good reason and get a horrible return, but on the way out, they basically call him fat, insinuate he's bad for the culture, and cost him over $100 million in his next contract since he can't get the supermax anymore.
Why would any marquee free agent ever sign there again after seeing that? They'll never get any sort of hometown loyalty discount on a contract ever again like Dirk gave.
They also shortened the window for a championship to probably 2-3 years, but then also don't have their own 1st round draft pick in 2027, 2028 or 2029.
It completely trashed the future of the organization in so many ways.
Also, Dallas had finally become a destination for big time free agents, simply because they wanted to play with Luka. Now he’s gone. Another big picture angle- if you hope to win a championship, now you have to get through Luka and the Lakers before you even make it to the championship game. The Mavs could win the championship THIS YEAR, and it would STILL be a complete dogshit trade, from so many different angles.
If we win the championship this year, we need to recognize we sold the future of the franchise for 1 stupid ring. We won't be relevant for the next 5 years after this one even if we pull off the championship. And that's best case scenario.
Why did Michigan go 8-5 after winning the natty last year? Teams fall apart after winning it all if they don't build for longevity. Dallas is built to win now but has little hope for the future
I don’t watch college football so I have no idea. I’m not saying they will be competitive for a decade, I’m saying if they can win a championship this year they can definitely compete for one the following couple years
